STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Actor Mark Hamill Jokes About Recent "Dark-Side Luke" Poster Theory

Mark Hamill has weighed in on a recent fan theory that Luke Skywalker has fallen to the dark side, and while his take will have some fans' rolling their eyes, Hamill might be hinting at a different twist.

There are just under two months left before the eighth entry in the Star Wars saga hits theatres, which means we still have plenty of time to speculate before getting any answers.

One of the biggest questions that fans have heading into the movie concerns the last Jedi himself, Luke Skywalker. While Luke made an appearance in The Force Awakens, the audience still wasn’t given much information about how the character has changed since Return of the Jedi. This has lead to a ton of fan theories being tossed around the internet over the last two years.

Earlier this month, Comicbookmovie.com reported how the new IMAX standee for the movie shows Luke on both the light and dark sides of the Force, and now with the release of the official poster for The Last Jedi, the theory that Luke has turned to the dark side has gained some more traction.

Some keen fans on the Star Wars subreddit have pointed out how the film's villain always looms at the back of a Star Wars poster—the spot Luke happens to fill. On the Episode I poster, Darth Maul looms at the back. With Episodes III, IV, V and VI it’s Darth Vader, and with Episode VII it’s Kylo Ren.

Mark Hamill has since used this popular theory to troll fans on Twitter:

While Hamill is famous for messing with his fans, his suggestion that Luke isn’t necessarily a hero might be more than just a joke. Some fans have theorized that Luke is becoming a Gray Jedi, a Force-user who operates in between the light and dark sides of the Force. Luke’s position in the center of the poster might represent just this.

Of course, we’ll have to wait a couple months to find out the truth, when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theatres in December.

I have a feeling he will be made out to have turned to the dark side but that will not be the case by Episode 9.

I think it's on purpose just to keep us guessing. And it's working. I seen that standee that had all the heroes on one side of the arch, and all the villains on the other. And Luke was on both sides. Messing with my head.

@WYLEEJAY - I think there's a good chance you're right. Lucasfilm loves toying with us.

@JPH152 - Maybe he actually plays both sides to get to the root of the true evil, so then it would be correct either way? Lol

Can anyone enlighten me on Grey Jedi? Were they something explored in the novelizations?

@smgmayhem - Grey (no such thing as Grey Jedi) is a force user who uses both sides of the force and doesn't sway to either side, they're not good or evil

He's either going Gray or Dark, and I don't think Mark Hamill approves.

I think the family guy ones should be included in that poster set.

Personally the whole she turns evil he turns good is too cliche for me. Especially after kylo killed han. How do get back to the light side? Same thing with Vader, you can redeem yourself but would no be wholly good again. Just let good vs evil playout, no big twist needed

I have a feeling Luke did something he's not proud of (Convinced Kylo to be a mole for Snoke) or whatever that gets revealed in the Last Jedi, so while he may not be a villain of the dark side it doesn't mean he can't be considered an antagonist to Rey who may become jaded and turn to the dark side, setting up Finn vs Rey in Episode 9.

My idea for an origin story of the Jedi would be focusing on the founders of the order. Two twin brothers from Dantooine. They are strong in the force, but do not know what drives them forward. I was thinking that when they start the Jedi Order they teach their padawans that emotions are apart of who they are, and they should welcome them. But know that they are not their emotions, learn to control them. I'm thinking mini-series format. And the big bad of the series will be Mark Ragnos.

Now that I actually think about it...He won't go Dark. Hamill would not allow it
