STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER's Young Leads Could Return In Future Movies According To Kathleen Kennedy

The stories of characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron are only just beginning, but those of you worrying about not seeing them again needn't fret. Here's what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says.

Solo: A Star Wars Story not living up to box office expectations changed Lucasfilm's plans for the film series in a massive way, and the franchise is now going on hiatus while Disney goes back to the drawing board and talks to the likes of Jon Favreau, Rian Johnson, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about another trilogy of movies unrelated to the Skywalker Saga.

But just because that story has come to an end, doesn't mean we won't see more of newly introduced characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. During a recent interview, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy weighed in on the future of that trio and while she wouldn't get into specifics, it definitely sounds like the door is open to them returning somewhere down the line.

"You know, there is an appropriate time. We're using this appropriate time as an opportunity to see where we're going now that we're leaving the Skywalker Saga behind," she revealed. "But there's no question that there's certain characters that we've created certainly in the last three movies that we may very well wanna see down the line in the future."

We'll just have to wait and see what happens next with these characters, but it would be fun to be a fly on the wall in Lucasfilm right now as it definitely feels like they're taking the franchise down some unexpected routes. Plans certainly seem to have changed  since movies revolving around the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi (who could move to Disney+), Yoda, and Darth Vader were rumoured.

So is Rey going to be the last Jedi. I mean unless she trains another we are just going to have force sensitive characters for now on right? I mean I know there’s plenty of places they could go with the stories but I’m also curious how the general audience is going to react if there’s not epic Jedi battles. I for one have only watched the movies haven’t seen any cartoons or played any of the games. So I have no idea where the story could go . I’m not sure if I should be worried or excited lol

@whynot - It's gong to be just like ROTJ. Rey will be the new Luke Skywalker and revive the Jedi order...again. JJ Abrams likes to "rehash old films" or keep things "familiar" so it's easy to guess how it all ends now.

TLJ was meant to end "the jedi teachings of the PAST" because they were flawed, not end ALL jedis overall. I don't think Rey was the last jedi, it was Luke because Rey was supposed to create a new path for future jedis to follow. As Luke said in the film, it's impossible to just focus on the light and ignore the dark because balance is necessary for the universe to exist. All the jedi teachings in the past were flawed because they refused to pass on or acknowledge their failures. The failures of the jedis are what created evil sith lords in the 1st place. Luke dies at the end to create "a new hope" for the next generation, Rey flees with the old jedi texts to create her own path, & force sensitive children were shown at the end to remind us of privilege. You don't need to be born from a skywalker, solo, or some important characters' lineage to wield the force, nor does your upbringing matter (looking at you Rey).

JJ Abrams is probably going to ignore all of TLJ, so it no longer matters anyway. I am 1 of the few who appreciated the new direction Rian Johnson was pushing, but too many complaints & solo's flop lead to this retcon. Kathleen Kennedy re-instating JJ Abrams was a sign that Star Wars is now going to focus on cashing in on nostalgia rather than forcing "a new direction", which is sad IMO.

guys I think she means through spin off or series format because in that moment in the interview they are talking about the series.

The story ends here, of course the cpuld do a prequel series based on kylo ren and snoke thats what I think she wants to say.

I would like the franchise to venture into the realm of horror. It is risky although it can work.

There are places where the Dark Side is more powerful. Places where a rebel pilot can arrive and discover things that can make a man go crazy.

@Repian - I always had this idea to do a cinematic short about a rebel pilot crash landing on a force planet that is heavily influenced by the dark side of the fore. Like a netherworld of dark force energy.

Such as Moraband

The Shining meets SW. It sort of makes him go mad in a way. Meanwhile his cohorts are looking to save him.

@Repian - I always love the episodes of Clone Wars where it slips into that semi-horror tone.

The part where Darth Maul is scuttling around those tunnels with his Spider legs is pretty creepy.

This is how I know this new sequel trilogy has failed...I just could care a less about the new characters. I don't know if it's the writing or the actors, but they just haven't resonated with me. I have no real desire to see more of them.

As much as people like to hate on the prequel, I was invested with the characters from it. I was actually really liking Finn the most in TFA, but they completely cast him aside in TLJ and downgraded him in my opinion. The Original Trilogy characters are still the most charismatic and ones you always want to see more of. Hell, I'm more invested with the characters from Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars, and I'm the generation that saw the originals in the theater. And to be honest, hearing that Ashoka and Ezra may make an appearance in Ep. 9 is really the only thing that has me excited.

@Philvis - It’s the writing.
The cast seems like they could be more memorable if given the right material.

@Philvis - @Philvis - It is the writing. With Kylo’s mask alone we’ve seen a director go, “he has a mysterious path!,” next director says, “ditch it all! Smash the mask! No one is special over anyone else and ANYONE can be a Jedi!,” and finally we’re back to, “nooooope, I said mysterious path! Fix that mask!” It’s hard to watch and worse to stomach. Should have stuck with George’s scripts as sketches. There was most likely a cohesive story to the 6 movies that came before. Most exciting thing Lucas said was that the movies are all supposed to be very unique from one another. This new trilogy is a copy/repaste while gutting the reasons why these films have endured.

In another 10/20 years with Rey training a new group of force users would be cool

They better. There is doubtless going to be lots of stories to be told. And let’s not make this universe tiny. Would love to see any of the three interact eventually with any of the new characters from these new trilogies.

Maybe we’ll revisit the cast in ten years when Rey tries to kill broom boy as he gets more powerful during training ..;)

I like Rey and Poe just fine. Finn has largely been mishandled unfortunately. I still feel like we don't have a great sense of who these 3 are. As if we barely know them.
DeathSeal

@BlackBeltJones - I know! Finn could have been great torn between his training as a ruthless killer and doing what he knows deep down is right. Instead they made him into a joke of a janitor.
Ravenous

Why would I want to see anymore of these guys. I mean, I did care quite a bit about Rey and Finn in TFA, but boy was all that pretty much destroyed when they practically downgraded Finn and made Rey one of the greatest Mary Sues I’ve ever seen. Poe, they just took the biggest shit on in TLJ.

Kathleen Kennedy...groan. Wearing Star Wars t-shirts at celebration that her assistant picks out for her, then throws away after the event. She looks like a wife who tries to get into her husband's feverish fandom of a sporting event, but just doesn't get it.

Chances are they'll be disheartened and unwilling after how a percentage of fans have responded to the new movies. Such a shame.

Yeah it's alright them returning in future movies but they aren't as loved as the legends of the original trilogy. Seeing Rey and the others won't have the same wow factor as seeing Han,Luke and Leia.
