UPDATE: TOY STORY 3 Writer Michael Arndt May Pen STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Oscar winning screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine is said to be the leading contender to pen the screenplay for Disney's Star Wars: Episode VII after writing a 40-50 page treatment. Also, the studio want to bring back the original trilogy's three protagonists and are eying big name directors.

While the internet has been filled with rumors concerning the director for Star Wars: Episode VII, a screenwriter for the highly anticipated installment in the sci-fi franchise is still being sought. According to Vulture, the leading contender to work on the sequel's screenplay is Academy Award winning writer Michael Arndt, who previously worked on Little Miss Sunshine and Pixar's Toy Story 3. Ardnt has written a 40 to 50 page treatment for Star Wars VII, and will likely pen a draft for the Disney/LucasFilm project. Vulture say that the film is eying a 2014 shoot for its previously announced 2015 release date.

Also, sources tell the site that the studio want to bring back the original Star Wars trilogy's three protagonists: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford). While no deals are in place for the original actors to return, there are reportedly "high ambitions" to sign Hamill; and recently, Ford and Fisher expressed interest in reprising their roles. As for a director, Ardnt's treatment will soon cross the desks of top directors such as Steven Spielberg (LucasFilm co-chair Kathleen Kennedy's former producing partner), J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and Brad Bird (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol). No word on whether or not any of these directors are interested in Star Wars: Episode VII, but Disney apparently want to offer the film to big directors first.

Ardnt has had a close relationship with Disney's Pixar, and is known for being a big Star Wars fan. So it shouldn't be surprising that LucasFilm and Disney would be interested in him writing the next Star Wars. Ardnt recently penned Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and is the screenwriter for director Pete Doctor's (Up) next Pixar film. What do you think of this news?

Update: Deadline reveal that Ardnt has not only written a story treatment for Star Wars: Episode VII, but the entire sequel trilogy which was previously confirmed by Disney. The site also confirm that the screenwriter is in line to work on Episode VII's script next year.

I'm all for Luke coming back, maybe as an Obi-Wan type figure, but I don't really want to see Han or Leia back, at least not as prominent roles in Ep. VII.

Is about time, if they bring them back, the series can move forward. In other words, Luke can start a new Jedi Academy. Some of the students join the dark side.........well you get the idea.

Michael did a good job writing the scrpit for Toy Story 3 (Which was the best out of the entire franchise) I think he would be a good choice.

And to be fair, Lucas is pretty good at outlining things -just look at the Indy films (Crystal Skull doesn't count as a "real" Indy film) and the original trilogy plus, the whole concept is his vision. It's filling in all the blanks and getting good performances out of actors is where he has the problems but things usually work out when he takes a more executive role in everything.

The main point is that Arndt is a huge Star Wars fan. He saw what elements caused the failure of the prequels and he is well aware of the lore around this franchise. Only a true Star Wars fan will get this right.

OMG i just realized how epic this could be...Imagine the trailer line with Han saying to Luke "Just like old times, huh?" Then Luke takes out a troop of aliens with his Lightsaber, Han and Leia shoot to kill. Luke smirks "Exactly, Han" I'm in :D

@johnshadow24 It's a possibility but I'm not sure if he'll do Star Wars and Star Trek… that'll be nearly impossible. I would really like to see him on it though. Or maybe Sam Mendes since Skyfall is getting so good reviews. Of course it's not showing in US yet.

Either Spielberg or Brad Bird, Abrams would try to impose one of the "screenwriters" he's used to work with.

Spielberg of course would be the best choice.

@SmellofDuty Skyfall is an epic Bond movie, definately the best of the three Daniel Craig ones, I hope you enjoy it loads. That's a good point about ST and SW but he has expressed interest in the film and I think Disney are going to be smart on this one and give them to three different directors. They have the chance to make the greatest Star Wars trilogy of all time here and I think they know that plus with the success of the Marvel Movies and Pirates (even if the 4th alienated some hardcore fans lol)

I have only one thing to say. Yes. Yes to all of that. My vote is for Brad Bird to direct. After seeing his Mission Impossible, I can't wait to see his take on Star Wars. Spielberg... I actually don't want him on this. In the 80's, yes. Now it feels like a wrong fit.
