On a scale of 10, Super 8 pretty much scored an eight by collecting $12.2 million on Friday, according to early estimates. (It also grossed $1 million on Thursday from Twitter-publicized screenings at 324 theaters.) The sci-fi adventure, directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, was never expected to leave the train station with huge numbers, with industry insiders predicting a $30 million opening. But Super 8 is now on track for a debut of about $34 million. The PG-13 movie will likely fall a bit short of the opening gross of the 2008 Abrams-produced monster flick Cloverfield, which gobbled up $40.1 million its first weekend. But for a $50 million film starring a mostly no-name cast, this is still a solid start.

This report gives the financial drops of some of the years biggest summer films so far. People are wondering if Super 8 will also plummet in box office sales. As for the other films, here are their standings:

In second place, X-Men: First Class fell a somewhat alarming 65 percent for $7.6 million. The mutant action film is on pace for a $25 million weekend, which would give it a two-week total of about $99 million. By comparison, the prior four X-Men movies had accumulated an average of $138 million by their second weekends. The Hangover Part II dropped 46 percent for $5.7 million, while Kung Fu Panda 2 slipped only 28 percent for $4.6 million. In fifth, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides plundered $3.1 million. Both Pirates and Hangover Part II crossed the $200 million mark on Friday.

Here is the leaderboard at the box office now currently lead by Super 8:

The week’s other new release, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, debuted in seventh place with $2.2 million on Friday. The PG-rated children’s film, which is based on a popular book series but received unflattering reviews, will finish the weekend with about $6 million. And Woody Allen’s comedy Midnight in Paris, which expanded nationwide to 944 theaters, grossed $1.6 million on Friday. Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.
1. Super 8 — $12.2 mil
2. X-Men: First Class — $7.6 mil
3. The Hangover Part II — $5.7 mil
4. Kung Fu Panda 2 — $4.6 mil
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — $3.1 mil

Yeah. XFC is dead, couldn't even hold the number 1 spot for more than a week. Thor did much better and it was the first film of the franchise.

What are you talking about "XFC is dead"?Couldn't even hold the number 1 spot for more than a week?No movie this year has held number 1 going against another big movie.Fast Five didn't, Pirates didn't, The Hangover didn't and First Class didn't.

The only reason Thor did was because it's competition was Priest and Bridesmaids. It didn't have any major competition.

As for First Class being dead, look at Rio.It opened with less than First Class, and Rio has made $461M worldwide since April.Look at Kung Fu Panda 2.It also opened with less than First Class and has made $260M worldwide in 2 weeks.

First Class is going to be fine.

Who cares if First Class is "dying" in the box office anyway? It's going to make enough money warrant a sequel. Critics loved it (even more than Thor). It's fine.

A kids movie is not a competition for the 5th movie of one of the biggest CBM franchise of all time.

Super 8 was better than Thor and X-Men:First Class. Here's my rank:
1)Super 8
2)X-Men:First Class
3)Thor

I haven't seen the others yet but i have high hopes for Kung-Fu Panda 2

@WittySupermane "Wow, didn't expect Super 8 to do well, I figured all the emo pussies of this generation wouldn't get the whole early eighties Amblin vibe."
totally agree

Well, technically, X-M:FC's second week wouldn't have been enough to beat the opening of Bridesmaids. Unfortunately, it's not having the legs many had hoped for... "Super 8" didn't exactly crowd out the marketplace, and Green Lantern opens next week to the same core audience, so there will be another big drop then.

It can still earn a sequel, certainly, simply by virtue of it being a quality film that can grow an audience as time goes by... But I think there will be grounds for people at Fox to argue for another direction as well.

"Super 8" is a boring, schmaltzy, anti-climactic, unoriginal, disposable sci-fi/action movie. If you like this genre, save your money and go see "Thor" and "X-Men." "Super 8" is simply "Goonies," "ET," "Close Encounters," and "Cloverfield-lite" lumped together. It drags on for well over an hour before you get to see "the monster," which is so obscured by darkness and frantic movements that you can hardly make it out. Only until the very end do you get a head-shot which is a giant let down because "it" is a wimpy version of "Cloverfield" monster.

Even worse is that Spielberg, as usual, makes the gaggle of cutesy kid geniuses save the day and makes the adults look like nudniks without the grey matter to figure out wants happening right under their noses. I could go on but it would only frustrate me over the money I lost.

Movie critics nationally gave this crap good reviews (3 stars). Most were the same folks who over-criticized "Thor" and "X-Men." Makes no sense unless you consider the "Spielberg" money, power, and influence factor. This guy's had it. It's about time he retires on the billions he's bilked from hardworking movie fans. Also, the overrated "Abrams" should be flogged for riding the coattails of this drivel.
