Skydance CCO Says TERMINATOR Franchise Is "Not On Hold, But Re-Adjusting"

Even though it managed to perform pretty well worldwide, Terminator: Genisys didn't really make much of a lasting impression at the domestic box office this past summer. With rumors circulating about the franchise being put on hold, a Skydance exec has decided to clarify..

"There is no fate, but what we make."

Skydance's latest Terminator sequel, Terminator: Genisys, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jingle All The Way) & Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones), didn't exactly set the domestic box office on fire this past summer, bringing in just over $89 million, but despite that, it still managed to make a pretty significant impression at the foreign box office with a collection of over $350 million, nearly four times as much as its domestic total. Its current global worldwide gross is a little over $440 million.

A few days ago, a report surfaced suggesting that because of the disappointing domestic results, Paramount Pictures & Skydance Productions had placed the two already announced Terminator sequels on an indefinte hold, but yesterday, at TheWrap's 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference TheGrill, Skydance's Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg directly addressed these rumors and asserted that the franchise was definitely not on hold: "I wouldn't say on hold, so much as re-adjusting." What does this mean exactly? Well, according to Goldberg, it sounds like they're not only still developing their new Terminator trilogy, but also still working on that television series, which was announced in 2013: “At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises... so the idea of a ‘Terminator’ TV show fits into that universe. All the steps have to be taken in unison.

When addressing the box office collection, she referred to the ever-changing global box office: “We’re ultimately happy with overall worldwide numbers. Do I wish we would have done better domestically? Absolutely... Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago — I’m not saying it’s not important, it is — but we have to play to a worldwide market... In terms of ‘Terminator,’ the worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly."

As for the Genisys sequel, which is already slated for a May 19, 2017 release date, it sounds like even with the franchise reportedly not on hold, the film will still be somewhat delayed as its expected production start date has already been pushed back: “We are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year, because again, it would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say.”

Based on these comments, it sure looks like Skydance is really working hard to reimagine their Terminator franchise and restore it back to its early '90s glory days. What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

THey need better Writers and Directors, also get rid of Jai Courtney.
Also remember that T1 and T2 were R Rated and scary.

Here's a list of things I would have liked to have seen that was promised in earlier films.

1) THe Dark horrible future show in T1 and T2 where humans were struggling and more Guerilla fighters using Tactics and the unbreakeable human spirit.
2) How they dealt with the nuclear fallout.
3) Skynet using humans to dispose of the dead.
4) How John Connor's leadership and knowledge worked against Skynet.
5) John's relationship with Kyle.
6) How John liberated Kyle and others from Skynets camp.

Just watched it and the movie was garbage.

How can you spend $250 million to make a movie about artificial intelligence, and not have somebody familiar with the basics of computer programming look at your script?

The franchise doesn't necessarily need to die, but maybe book 10 minutes with someone who understands AI and programming before you invest another quarter billion.

Could we be getting the movie version of this soon. I like the comic that Dark Horse made in the early 90's. I think I still own it somewhere.

I like the idea of a tv show in the universe. I know I'm one of the few who enjoyed the Sarah Chronicles when that came on.

I think the movie would have performed better if they had:

- NOT cast box office poison in Jai Courtney
- NOT made John Connor the enemy he fought his entire life to prevent

I get the whole alternate timeline method, but man, that's just so weak. Jai was bad enough on its own...but I almost stopped watching when they revealed John was now a Terminator is this "new timeline".

They made a bad move. Bold move, sure...but blew right up in their faces.

Maybe they should have just kept the Sarah Connor Chronicles on the air. That show was better than T3, Salvation and Genisys combined.

Universe building has to happen organically. I'm tire of every studio and there mother trying to copy/mimic Marvel's model. Some movie should just be stand alone movies and if those stand alone movies happen to organically fit in a Universe from a purely creative stand point then you can retroactively connect the movies.

Like if you made a stand alone Terminator movie and a Stand alone Robocop movie and then you wanted to loosely adapt the Terminator vs Robocop comic then you could retroactively connect both movies in future movies and adapt the crossover.

IF THEY REBOOT, HERE'S WHO YOU GET TO SPEARHEAD THIS THING:

ALEX GARLAND (DREDD, EX MACHINA): DIRECTOR AND SCREENWRITER

ROGER DEAKINS (SKYFALL, SICARIO): CINEMATOGRAPHY

John Connor: Jensen Ackles (adult)

(Teen) Tye Sheridan

Sarah Connor: Sharni Vinson

*ARNOLD MUST BE THE VILLIAN AGAIN and a standalone adventure must be the plot. No sequel setup or universe buidling. That's what the first two did so well. Standalone films

*The film should harken back to that old school kind of 80s Rated R action mixed with the exploration of the existence of intelligent machines. This brings into question the requirement that life be organic, rather than a broader category of autonomous entities, establishing a notional concept of systemic intelligence. I think John Connors training as the future leader should be explored cinematically...the Sarah Connor chronicles did it well for tv. Maybe a film should give us a look into his rite of passage or him experiencing the begining of the fall of the world as Skynet begins. Maybe have him as a kid in his late teens as Skynet is activated and his mom guides him towards begining the rebellion.

It's a bit crazy how I see most of the folks I know from Spartacus almost exclusively in CBTV roles these days, while for some reason Jai Courtney repeatedly lands roles in big movies. Like... why?

"Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jingle All The Way)" Really??? This is the Arnold movie you chose to use as reference?? "...would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say.” WTF! Audiences spent 440 million at the theaters. That means make the next movie! Then there's the bluray, dvd and download money that's gonna come in too. Make it on time before Arnold ( from Jingle All The Way) dies!

they should've rebooted/remade the first movie, instead of doing the convoluted dogshit that they did.

terminator is a pretty limited concept. it made for a good film. and it took james cameron in his prime to squeeze out one good sequel from it. that's it. that's the end of the story. after that, it's best to just reboot/remake instead.

terminator 3 and genisys prove that any attempt to continue the story or add to the lore will only make it convoluted and stupid.

salvation proved that nobody gives a shit about the boring ass future rebellion storyline.

just reboot/remake.
