"There is no fate, but what we make."
Skydance's latest Terminator sequel, Terminator: Genisys, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jingle All The Way) & Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones), didn't exactly set the domestic box office on fire this past summer, bringing in just over $89 million, but despite that, it still managed to make a pretty significant impression at the foreign box office with a collection of over $350 million, nearly four times as much as its domestic total. Its current global worldwide gross is a little over $440 million.
A few days ago, a report surfaced suggesting that because of the disappointing domestic results, Paramount Pictures & Skydance Productions had placed the two already announced Terminator sequels on an indefinte hold, but yesterday, at TheWrap's 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference TheGrill, Skydance's Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg directly addressed these rumors and asserted that the franchise was definitely not on hold: "I wouldn't say on hold, so much as re-adjusting." What does this mean exactly? Well, according to Goldberg, it sounds like they're not only still developing their new Terminator trilogy, but also still working on that television series, which was announced in 2013: “At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises... so the idea of a ‘Terminator’ TV show fits into that universe. All the steps have to be taken in unison.”
When addressing the box office collection, she referred to the ever-changing global box office: “We’re ultimately happy with overall worldwide numbers. Do I wish we would have done better domestically? Absolutely... Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago — I’m not saying it’s not important, it is — but we have to play to a worldwide market... In terms of ‘Terminator,’ the worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly."
As for the Genisys sequel, which is already slated for a May 19, 2017 release date, it sounds like even with the franchise reportedly not on hold, the film will still be somewhat delayed as its expected production start date has already been pushed back: “We are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year, because again, it would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say.”
Based on these comments, it sure looks like Skydance is really working hard to reimagine their Terminator franchise and restore it back to its early '90s glory days. What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!
