During Cineplex Magazine's set visit in Toronto, the stars of Total Recall were asked some very interesting questions about their characters, the experience of the film and how it is different from the 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although most quotes are from Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel serves a good description of her character.

Q: The characters you play were in the original movie, but have they changed much here? How would you describe them?
Farrell:"I play Doug Quaid, who, very much like in the original, is a member of the proletiart, fairly low-level blue collar worker in a really good factory scheme. This is a man, Quaid, that doesn't feel like he is living the life that he should be and it just doesn't add up...And he begins to be told, and shown, that he's actually not who he thought he was, and that he's been a pawn in a much bigger game than he could have ever visualized. But he's just a normal regular Joe at the start and then he finds out that he's anything but; that there was a greater purpose to his life all along"

Biel: "In the backstory that we have all talked about, [Melina] has grown up in this family who has always been against this particular government and system that feels quite unfair and corrupt. She's very much this kind of underground soldier and this very strong, empowered, skilled, very able person. My character obviously understands a lot more than [Quaid does], which is terribly confusing for him."

Q: Do you see this movie being about his search for an identity, his search for truth?
Farrell: "Completely. This is, for me, the story of a man who's going from being unconscious to being conscious. A man who is going from being lost in the quagmire of his own irrelevant existence, or what he feels is irrelevant to something of more relevance or something of more substance that can take him through."

Q: Was it obvious from the script that this version of Quaid was very different from Arnold's version?
Farrell: "I noticed one thing: a lack of one-liner jokes, and no one does one-liners like Arnie. Do you know what I mean?"

Do they get their asses to Mars in this one?

@theunknown: No they do not. This movie is based more on the novel by Philip K. Dick, "We Can remember It for You Wholesale" then the first Total Recall. The book is very anti-goverment, and a movie like the one we are getting now would not have done well in the Cold War era. So location was changed, as well as the villain(evil corperation).

Farrell:"I play Doug Quaid, who, unlike the original, is smaller and less charismatic, and a fairly low-level blue collar worker in a really good factory scheme. This is a man, Quaid, that doesn't feel like he is living the life that Arnold did, and it just doesn't add up...And he begins to be told, and shown, that he's actually not the right man for this role, and that he's puny compared to a much bigger less talented actor that and will never make Arnold money. But he's just a normal regular Joe at the start and then he finds out that he's in a pointless watered down remake, that should have left the original well alone"

The original didn't follow source material for shit, and you guys are all about source material. So I'm surprised any of you are actually complaining. This will be better than the original. I love Arnold, but Ferrel is a better actor, and can do action just fine. Not every action star has to be on steroids, you twits.

ugh the source material was a 10 page short story that had nothing to do with anything. no secret agent wives, no hookers, no cohagen, no kuato, no mars. this is NOT a remake of the story, it's a remake of the MOVIE.

and sorry, but !@#$ing retarnold schwarzeneggar is the worst thing that ever happened to movies. he destroys everything he touches. this movie is worth seeing if only to help dull the memory of the first one, which could have been a good movie with richard dreyfuss, OR a GREAT one if david cronenberg hadn't quit, and used william hurt as QUAIL in his much more faithful adaptation.

i love verhoeven, but totall recall really, really sucks.

actually i think mars IS in the story... even though he doesn't GO there i think he'd been there in the past. but i definitely remember an alien invasion... and quail is like an accountant or a bookkeeper or something. a brainy wuss, not some muscly halfwit.

They've already revealed most of the plot in the trailer. Is that ever a good sign?

Looks like a sci-fi movie for people who think they're too cool for sci-fi.
