SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS Will NOT Feature Fin Fang Foom Confirms Simu Liu

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu confirms the upcoming Marvel Studios movie will not feature Fin Fang Foom, elaborating on the approach that's being taken to the hero in the MCU.

With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios is clearly looking to move away from the stereotypes that surrounded the character during his earliest comic book adventures. As a result, the titular hero's father is no longer Fu Manchu, and will instead be known as Wenwu (a.k.a. The Mandarin).

Rumours have still persisted that we'll see Fin Fang Foom appear in the movie, but Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu, has debunked those reports in a recent interview with NBC News.

While the site doesn't share a direct quote, it's noted that "Liu said, that some questionable elements from the source material, like the shape-shifting dragon-like being puzzlingly named 'Fin Fang Foom,' do not make an appearance in the movie." Despite that, LEGO sets and Funko Pops have confirmed that we will see a water dragon named The Great Protector.

"We knew that we were potentially navigating a minefield, especially when looking at this property that was created by two white men in the 1970s at the height of the kung fu craze," the actor said. "We have not shied away from ripping out whatever doesn't work in 2019, 2020, 2021."

"From the moment that Marvel Studios decided that there needed to be a voice for Asian characters and a lead Asian character in the space of the [Marvel Cinematic Universe], they have all kind of considered what the best way was to incorporate a story that both celebrates Asianness and all of its wonderful dimensions, and its facets and its nuances, and also celebrates martial arts."

There will inevitably be some fans left feeling disappointed that Foom is being left on the page, but it's a decision that makes sense. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is clearly heading down a more authentic route, and that's ultimately going to be extremely beneficial for the superhero.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to be released in theaters on September 3, 2021.

I get the problem with Fu Manchu, but what is the deal with Fin Fang Foom actually? It's a dragon from outer space right, so technically it isn't even Asian?

@bkmeijer - Because it's a name that tries to sound 'Asian' but makes no sense nor does it exist in any Asian or Chinese language..

@Kumkani - yeah okay I can understand that

@Kumkani - I wonder if it had been possible to actually tie it to mythology, but after years of this I guess the safe thing to do was steer clear. I don't think Marvel has learned if Native American Cap is any indication.

I’m kinda bummed out. I just wanted to live long enough to hear someone in a serious big budget blockbuster movie say ‘Fin Fang Foom’.

That’s some nonsense right there. What’s wrong with Fin Fang Foom?I kinda thought he wouldn’t really be here but was also hoping I was wrong but I don’t understand the problem with the name if I read that right.Seems like a reach to me but what do I know

@Tpo81 -the name is basically a non-asian person's (somewhat stereotypical) idea of what an Asian name would be.

If the movie is good, I hope we get a trilogy. My hopes are they add Iron Fist as well as manipulate a few of the C-tier villains from the marvel library.

Like 8-ball could easily become a kung fu villain with his pool stick or something.

I was looking forward to the more fantastical elements, so this is kind of disappointing.

But I have to ask, if it’s about removing stereotypes... why keep the martial arts angle?

I don't know the history of the name but it never sounded implicitly Asian to me. It always sounded like an alternate take on the slang bing bang boom. I think the first times I ever heard that were from Italian mobsters in movies but has been incorporated in wide use by many others.

Ace101
Ace101 - 6/2/2021, 6:11 AM
@inkniron - agreed, the only reason people think it has some Chinese asian connection name wise is because the character happens to be associated with asian characters. But this a very likely origin. Or the whole Fe Fi fo fum thing from Jack and the beanstalk.
