SHAZAM! Currently Looking To Strike $40 Million Opening Weekend At The Domestic Box Office

The latest box office tracking for Warner Bros.' Shazam! movie indicates a respectable $40 million opening weekend in The US for The Big Red Cheese's first big-screen adventure. More past the jump...

Shazam! is set to fly into theaters on April 5, and the David F. Sandberg-directed DC superhero flick is currently looking at a domestic opening weekend haul of $40 million.

While that may not seem like a particularly strong opening for a superhero blockbuster, it's a respectable bow for a character that won't be very familiar to newer fans and even less so to general audiences. Plus, early word on the movie is extremely positive which should eventually give those numbers a decent boost once the reviews hit.

Regardless of how Shazam! winds up performing, it's clear that the studio is very confident in its quality, as it was recently announced that paid Fandango previews are being held two weeks before its release on March 23.

In other box office news, Disney’s Dumbo (March 28) looks set to take in between $58M and $75M, while Paramount's Pet Sematary remake (April 4) could rake in around $30M.

Well, the budget for Shazam was only 80/90 mil anyway. If this movie hits 500 mil in total, then that’s a success right there. Given it’ll be getting good reviews, there’s really no problem here.

@KWilly -
The Lego Movie: the Second Part— Rotten Tomatoes score = 86%
Opening weekend: $34m
Worldwide total (currently): $165m

I would have said that the Lego Movie sequel had more built-In audience appeal than “Shazam”, and look what happened to it despite good reviews. It’s at least worth some concern.

@Chewtoy -

The Lego Movie sequel came across as somewhat played out.
Kids are fickle and many of them (or more likely, many of
their parents) have seen one Lego movie too many to get fired
up to drag the family out for more. Shazam seems to be a fresh
new property with a fresh premise (for a CBM) of a boy trapped in a man's body.

Sure, Spider-Man (Peter or Miles) are teenage superheroes, but those characters have to deal with girl problems and handling
responsibility. Shazam is about the wonder and escapism of being
able to escape the problems of being a kid by magically growing
up with just one word.

@WarnerBrother - All Movies ultimately live and die due to the unique mix of properties involved in their releases. I’m merely pointing out that hitting $500m isn’t anything like a sure thing if the audience interest just isn’t there... even with glowing reviews. “Mad Max: Fury Road” got a well-earned Best Picture nomination and was the best action movie in years, yet worldwide it only managed $378m. “Edge of Tomorrow” did about the same business, despite also being an awesome action film with big stars.

Recent years have us believing that good reviews will drive a live-action superhero film over $500m easily enough, but I’m just cautioning that it’s no sure thing.

The good news is that, assuming the reviews really do end up being that positive, disappointing box office isn’t that big of a deal. Both “Fury Road” and “Edge of Tomorrow” have sequel talk anyway, and with “Shazam” there’s always the chance to add him to a team-up film or just count on the addition of the Rock to increase the box office potential of a sequel.

It'll do well enough. Luckily the budget is super low, I can see it having legs and raking in $600 mil WW.
