Filming on David F. Sandberg's upcoming DC Comics adaptation
Shazam has begun, as the director took to social media to announce the news.
Sandberg posted a photo of a film slate for "
Franklin," the working title for the project, along with the caption "Let's go!" with a lightning bolt.
Prior to today's announcement, Sandberg had been posting behind-the-scenes look at the production equipment for
Shazam. He posted a "nerdy" video showcasing the use of Blackmagic Micro Studio cameras capturing performances in 3D space, along with a photo of one of the rigs that'll be used in filming.
Shazam is set to hit theaters April 5, 2019. It will star
Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teen who can transform into an adult superhero (
played by Zachary Levi in the film) by speaking the magic word “Shazam!”, an acronym for ancient gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. In his adult form, he wields superhuman strength, speed, flight, and more. Not much is known about the film's actual plot, but there have been plenty of speculation and rumors surrounding cameos and appearances -
including Henry Cavill's Superman.
The start of filming may not seem like a big deal; but, for fans of
Shazam, this is incredibly exciting news - and a long time coming - as we're one step closer to officially seeing the original Captain Marvel come to life on the big screen for the first time.
