SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Director Confirms Divisive Trailer Line Won't Be In The Movie's Final Cut SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Director Confirms Divisive Trailer Line Won't Be In The Movie's Final Cut

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has responded to the backlash surrounding a now infamous line in the movie's trailer, confirming it's been cut from the final cut of the sequel...

"I just threw a truck at a dragon. I love my life."

Who could have guessed that line in the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer would be so divisive? The first teaser for the sequel definitely impressed, though Zachary Levi's adult Billy Batson having fun being a superhero ended up becoming a real point of contention among fans.

Honestly, we didn't think it was that bad, but director David F. Sandberg has now confirmed this particular piece of dialogue won't be in the final cut of the Shazam! sequel.

It doesn't sound like it was removed in response to the backlash, as the filmmaker would go on to point out how some moments are shot specifically for trailers. Shazam expressing his excitement to be fighting a dragon was clearly one of them, though we'd argue it fit into the tone established by 2019's first instalment.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods was supposed to be released later this month, but Warner Bros. made the wise decision to back down from Avatar: The Way of Water and pushed the movie into next year.

Check out Sandberg's comments in full below.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word "SHAZAM!," is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

The sequel's cast includes Zachary Levi as Shazam, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy, Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene, Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla, D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro, Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield/Super Hero Mary.

Djimon Hounsou returns as the Wizard, while Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren have all joined the movie as newly created villains.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

Other lines that were only in the trailer that from the top of my head are:

"If the bat wants to play, we'll play!" - Two-Face, Batman Forever (1995)

"Freddy vs. Jason, place your bets!" - Lori Campbell, Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

"Things just got out of hand!" - Doctor Strange variant, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Feel free to add more.

@Batman91 - "We have to forgive each other. Or everything we ever were will mean nothing". - MJ, Spider-Man 3 (2007)

And that line is supposedly from such an early version that it's from a scene where MJ goes to convince Harry to help Peter in the climax, as it's Gwen who is in danger from Venom, not MJ.

@IronSpider101 - I would’ve preferred that actually. Instead of turning MJ into the jealous “I’m just gonna stare at the phone when Peter calls” baby. And of course not making her the damsel in distress for the third time.

@Arthorious - isn’t that how Mary Jane portrayed in movies damsel in distress in every Spider-Man movie and comics mostly comics.,?

They make Mary Jane into April O’Neal in 80 cartoon of turtles

@Batman91 - The "You Complete Me" line from the Iron Man 2 trailer was not in the movie if I'm not mistaken.

@Batman91 - And there were a TON of lines and scenes in the Rogue One trailer that didn't make the final movie, but a big part of that had to do with it being totally remade.

@Arthorious - Yeah, I think it probably would've worked better too. I get their reasoning for it, though. It makes sense for the climax, especially considering Harry's death and the theme of forgiveness, to involve all three characters for a sense of closure and personal investment among them.

But I still think it would've worked with Gwen. It would've made the finale more about specifically Peter and Harry rekindling their friendship and there could be an interesting hook with Gwen presumably discovering Peter's identity.

@Batman91 - I'll never understand the removal of the "things just got out of hand", people loved that line.

It must be defeating to be on Twitter and read peoples opinions of your work. I was on Twitter over a decade ago stopped because I failed to see its value. It seemed too negative zone over there. I'm surprised that it's still used

This movie feels like the Zeitgeist passed it by.

Now it's stuck with old-assed kids and a 'humor' that went out of fashion with Love and Thunder.

THAT was a divisive line?? The internet is the worst. If I were a director I might post stuff on social media for marketing purposes but I would never actually read anything written by who knows who. Let them fight amongst themselves.

Am I missing something? Why is that line considered 'divisive'?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/1/2022, 6:05 AM
@Orphix - I think he's misusing the term 'divisive'. It's not like people are taking a stand because "Dragons are people too", but then a bunch of bigots are coming out saying "F*** the dragons! They cause a lot of damage and my cousin knows someone who was eaten by one".

No, it was just a shit moment and people said it was shit.

@ObserverIO - Wow! So it was literally people commenting on a line of dialogue?

I feel a comicbookmovie.com article comming on! I've now decided to rank, in order, all 4,628 lines of dialogue in Avengers: Endgame starting with the worst.

Trailers in the 90's barely revealed anything related to the plot. Now they show the whole [frick]ing movie in them. Unless if it's a Marvel movie, (they never spoil anything) I only watch half of new trailers lol

Never thought it was divisive ?! Anyway, I agree that the "i'm describing precisely what I just clearly did" trope is cheesy, so I'm glad it's not from the movie.

wow, dont you hold back, you brave soul, tackling the serious issues... that a fictional character is enjoying being a fictional superhero...

Once again Wilding shows his poor grasp of English. It’s only divisive if people were arguing it’s a great line.
