Spawn Reboot Is Still Moving Forward - Todd McFarlane Explains Why He Hasn't Signed Off On The Script

Despite rumors that Blumhouse's long-gestating Spawn reboot has been shelved, creator Todd McFarlane has now confirmed that the project is still moving forward.

Good news for fans of the demonic anti-hero, although it sounds like we might be waiting quite a while to see the movie.

“We’re just still trying to get the script right,” McFarlane tells Dread Central. “I know it’s frustrating to everybody, especially me. I haven’t signed off because I just am not reading what I have in my head.”

“What’s happening is people are either going too far off the reservation, or they’re being too loyal to it,” he added. “To me, there’s nothing worse than somebody coming up to me going, ‘Hey, I’m going to do a Spawn movie, and I’m going to take your first five issues, and I’m going to redo the origin issue.’ First off, we’ve already had that movie. And second off…There’re 380 issues of Spawn. I’m telling you right now, very little of the conversation would be the first five issues. I’ve got 380 chapters. Spawn is not defined by the first four or five chapters.”

McFarlane went on to lay out his vision for the new movie.

“It should just be really dark and gritty and unsettling. When I see examples like Obsession or Backrooms, you go, ‘The audience will consume this.’ We don’t need to do superhero. As a matter of fact… we should be trying to do something different because, again, we’re not going to have a $200 million budget like other superhero movies.”

In 2024, McFarlane announced that the reboot will be titled King Spawn. We assume this means the story will be at least partially based on the King Spawn comic run, which you can check out a synopsis for below.

"King Spawn further expands the Spawn Universe with a growing presence of Hell, Heaven, and Heroes here on Earth. A classic villain from Spawn's past has begun asserting his powers on Earth by corrupting as many souls as possible. And only Spawn knows that he even exists."

Back in 2022, the movie - which has been in the works since 2017, if you can believe it - added a new writing team in the form of Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier; Captain America: New World Order), and up-and-coming scribe Matthew Mixon.

As far as we know, Jamie Foxx (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Django Unchained) is still attached to play the lead role of Al Simmons, aka Spawn, but things may well have changed in that regard.

McFarlane was considering stepping behind the camera at one point, but seems to have had a change of heart, acknowledging that "he may not be the right person to direct, particularly now that some of the highest-profile writers in the comic book movie space are involved."

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” he said in a recent interview. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” added Spellman. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what SPAWN is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

Though the character's popularity has dwindled somewhat over the years, Image's Spawn was one of the best-selling comic books of the '90s. The 1997 movie failed to do Spawn and his various enemies and allies justice, but the HBO animated series was a lot more successful and is well worth tracking down if you haven't seen it yet.

King Spawn is being developed with an R-rating in mind.

Another month, another Todd comment about how the movie is still in development. For 30 years.

By the time this happens, 2 generations will have passed since the heyday of Spawn.

The window for this has long since been closed and bricked up.

@DocSpock - when they released him in mortal kombat and no one really cared I was shocked to realize spawn was huge over 20 years ago and now it’s mostly nostalgia and the toys

@Gambito -

My choices for action figures and their accessories was either G I Joe or Barbie. I never had either one.

A Spawn sequel is the equivalent of Half-Life 3 at this point.

Spawn might be the most overrated character in all of comics.

@Deckacards - its literally just because the Toddfather drew him. That's it. I'd be excited to see a movie about him but the bar would be low for me.

Dude…It needs a reboot for people to care about it again.

@Starlight - I’m sure we’re not getting McFarlane’s version of this movie. Somebody else will do it and give him a producers credit and he’ll be happy

I get it Todd, Spawn is your baby and your most successful invention but come on man let someone else write it and direct it. It is now painfully obvious that the reason the movie ain’t happening is Todd and Todd alone

If Jamie Foxx is still attached, I'm out. With this movie, he's going to have a lot of say about what and how words come out of his mouth and he will stink the joint up with his cool guy lines. I love the guy in Django, it's probably one of my favorite movies and he crushed it there, but it's because QT is a dictator on set and isn't going to let anyone screw his movie up. I think there's actually an interview with Foxx about this very thing. How he came in and tried his cool guy swagger and QT shut him the [frick] down.

I think he's a bit too overconfident about skipping the origin story, the movie is like 30 years old by now and the animated series is not that much younger either, Spawn also doesn't have the cultural stronghold he did back then either. This doesn't mean it has to linger there or fully redo those first few issues, but it's no bad idea to go back to the start and introduce audiences to the character again.

40 years ago, Todd McFarlane was a great artist. He stopped drawing and let his talent die. But he could never write. He has no damn clue how to write. As an artist he never learned the fundamentals and it did help him come up with a great drawing style. He tried that approach with writing: "Don't learn it, just do it". And he hit a brick wall. There are fundamentals that must be followed with writing.

He was actually going to do a Spawn movie about Spawn being a green mist. He liked the overrated The Departed and was like "I want a Spawn movie like that".

If ever a good Spawn movie were made, he could have no involvement in it's creation. Just like DC Comics wasn't telling Nolan how to do a Batman movie and Marvel didn't tell Raimi how to do Spider-Man. If McFarlane wants a great Spawn movie, he needs to let some genius filmmaker and real film writer have control over it.

And Jamie Foxx was never the right choice. This isn't 2008.

McFarlane's 380 chapters of shit! There is no real story. Spawn's history is just Spawn does this, Spawn does that. He shifted the comic to be about the hypocritical POS Al Simmons judging heaven and hell to be evil. Simmons is a POS judging others to be POS. Only the worst people in the world would relate to the POS Al Simmons.

The movie should be called 'POS'.
