Is The Budget For The Amazing Spider-Man Actually $220 Million?!

An actor working on the movie has let slip the budget for the upcoming 3D reboot, and it's a hell of a lot more than the previously reported figure of a lowly $80 million...

Last January, The Hollywood Reporter ran a story claiming that the then untitled Spider-Man reboot would have a lowly budget of $80 Million. Not exactly a lot for a 3D superhero movie, so many assumed it was a mistake or early figure. Well, it looks like the sceptics were right! Check out what actor Richard Norton had to say while talking to Moviehole.

"Unfortunately I can’t say much right now because I’m not allowed to. However I can say it was mostly stunt work. I doubt you’ll even recognise me. I play a SWAT guy but it’s a small part. I was on-set for four weeks and the experience was just phenomenal...it’s a $220 million budget movie!"

"Vic Armstrong was the second unit director and it was great working with him. Andy Armstrong, his brother, was the stunt coordinator and an old friend. Andy’s the one who brought me onboard so for all those reasons and more it was a lot of fun"

While an actor with a fairly small role wouldn't usually be privy to such information, he's clearly heard it from somewhere! And considering he's close friends with The Amazing Spider-Man's stunt coordinator, I'd say his claim could be seen as being pretty reliable!

With an all star cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012!

that just shows how much sonny and warner are trusting in their movies,as opposed to marvel.but i think the bigger part of this story is that mad max is full on and it starts in january

$80 mill does sound like nothing. Especially since the budget for SM3 was $258 mill or whatever.
Sounds like they'll do quite a bit with this film.

I think this movie definitely has the potential to be very great, as long as they stick with the comics and DON'T kill off the villains in every single movie with the acception of Green Goblin.

The suit is fine in my opinion. Only thing that kinda bugs me is the belt but I can look past that, it's not that big of a deal.

Talented actors, PRACTICAL effects and not just completely shot in CG, and I'm sure that the movie and it's special effects will look great in 3D (if it can emulate Avatar in any way). And a 200+ million dollar budget doesn't hurt either ;)

Hmm....I call BS, simply because they kept salaries super low (I recall Garfield being in the less than 5 million range whereas Tobey was 20 mil) and that's not including all the other stars; Defoe, Franco etc etc. Plus if they're going with Practical Effects on this, I can't see there being even a real need to be at the 220 mark. Especially if the CGI laden Spidey 3 was 258 mil or whatever it's being quoted at.

220 mil with the promotional budget maybe??

I hope they manage to bump off Uncle Ben fairly early. I'm tired of superhero-origin films.

I'm pretty excited about it still. I reckon Garfield is a great casting choice.

Wow i'm actually pretty excited now. Most because the cast seems phenomenal. Although i'm not too psyched about Garfield at the moment, I have faith. He's a well enough looking dude. I just don't know how he acts...or if he's gonna do Peter right. SCARY!

Besides the lizard and the destruction of the city, I don't see why this movie needs that big of a budget
LOL
LOL - 5/17/2011, 8:01 PM
LOL, more likely that some will go to the 3D special effects, marketing, making products for merchandising, etc. $220 mil, I think, is the total of what they're pulling into this thing and not just on the movie alone, though it IS the main thing.

Since they have that much money "now", can they do something about that stupid fruit roll-up costume? I understand it's a reboot, but since the traditional costume is iconic, why change/fix something if it ain't broken?

JohnTom88 - 5/17/2011, 8:06 PM
Sony has serious money. If Spidey is with Marvel Studios, max is going to be 200 mil.

NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 5/17/2011, 8:11 PM
What I've seen so far looks just about right for a 80mil movie. Hard to believe a dude with a small part who's probably misinformed about the budget.
CBMfan001
CBMfan001 - 5/17/2011, 8:11 PM
now that's more like it,if it was $80 million I highly doubt you can make a kick ass spidey movie from that money, even the 1st spiderman in 2002 had a budget of $130 million so this should have a minimum of $150 million as it's budget or else it'll be a very dull spidey.I'm sure Sony will use the money saved from the salaries to good use :)

in a way even $220 mil must be okay for them coz the 3rd cost $270 mil and if they tried to make a 4th it would have been $300 mil+,so its either way a win for Sony financially.
