Comic Book TALK: Amazing Spider-man (film)

Hi, Hybrid0027 here again! Today I'm going to list various reasons I think Amazing Spider-man will do well, maybe not do well, and some ideas for future films in the series.

So next year a film called the Amazing Spider-man will be released. Many people are curious about the film, others think it either will do well or not. Here are my thoughts on what might allow it to do well, might not, & some ideas for future films in the series.

PROS:

1) Influenced from older & modern Spider-man comics: It's seems known that they're borrowing from the classic Amazing Spider-man comics (appearance of Lizard in looks & introduction) and modern (more slimmer, genetically altered spider). This allows the viewer if only accustomed to the older or newer Spider-man comics to enjoy the film's faithfulness/introduce them to other Spider-man comics and also to new viewers because they now will be able to pick up a comic and somewhat understand it.

2) He's in high school and a teenager: The reasons this could help the film is most of Spider-man's popular events seems to take place while he's in high school, which is why I think it's commonly revisited in other media. Also having him be a high school student can allow the viewer to relate with Spider-man as many people are/were high school students and balance(d) school with extracurricular activities. Lastly, still being a teen can help attract younger and older audiences alike as adults may like how the film shows he's learning responsibility while the kid may like the idea he could be that/idol (kind of).

3) It's being released later: This gives a huge advantage to Amazing Spider-man as many great superhero films have been released giving writers, directors, producers, etc. knowledge on what things work or don't work in a superhero film. This also can greatly help as a trilogy of Spider-man films were already made, giving many ideas that could be utilized in Amazing Spider-man that viewers would like.

4) Darker Tone: This can be a pro due to the fact that Spider-man actually isn't that light of a hero when you look at his history. Yes, he's comical but many tragic events have/will happened which will shape him. Don't forget Peter Parker was seen in high school as a weird, nerdy, outcast in the comics plus the fact he constantly got bullied by Flash Thompson. These factors should not create a emotionally weak character or "every-thing's happy" character.

5) Web Shooters: The reason this can help the film is because when Peter magically had web shooters in his wrist it caused confusion and possibly over-analysis on the character. Having Peter create web shooters does two things for the viewer. First, it gives a understandable reason for web coming out of his wrist and not butt. Secondly, it shows the viewer that Peter Parker is smart and gifted in at least technology (something I feel the original Spider-man films didn't really show).

CONS:

1) 1st. Person POV: I've read from numerous sources that first person will be used for web swinging, which I don't think will work out that great & here's why. The reason is because part of what makes Spider-man "amazing, sensational, spectacular, etc." is watching him use his acrobatics while swinging throughout the city, also seeing this as he would could give the viewer much nausea and/or dizziness taking away enjoyment of the film.

2) Too Soon?: It's really personal opinion.

FUTURE IDEAS FOR SEQUELS:

1) Continuation: A much loved feature in a film series is the ability to have occurrences from past movies expand or carry on to the next one(s). For example, Kraven the Hunter watching throughout the films secretely so that he may formulate a plan or trap for Spider-man or Norman Osborn creating supervillians throughout the series as a result of failed formula testing (possibly another attempt at super soldier serum?). Basically, Peter should use whatever happens between him and the lizard as a reference for future superhuman conflicts and actions in Amazing Spider-man should carry on to the sequel.

2) Use critically acclaimed story arcs for inspiration: Nolan's Batman films are great examples as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight both took inspiration from The Man Who Falls, Batman: Year One & Batman: The Long Halloween, possibly Batman: The Killing Joke. Also The Dark Knight Rises seems like it will take a good amount of content from Batman: Knightfall. So overall to make a great movie you needs a great foundation.

3) If Symbiote/Black Suit again, make it last: One problem I had with Spider-man 3 was how short a duration he wore the black suit, even though I did like how it looked, when in comics he wore it for 4 years (real time), which makes me feel that he should wear it for at least a whole film and then take it off into the next film before it's climax, this could also give a excuse for a lesson in confidence to younger viewers via Spider-man overcoming the "big challenge" without any power boost.

Your article makes it seem as if the POV will be used for all web-slinging scenes. It will not. Hence, the reason they are using rigs and wire work shoot web-slinging scenes.

I think the POV gives off that "experiential" quality Director Webb spoke of. It also makes the 3D totally worth seeing.

Spidey is owned by Sony so no Super Soldier references, but Sony Pictures is going bust any day now so it'll probably go back to Marvel. Although when the rights do go back gaving Osborn try to re-create the super-soldier serum would be interesting as it fits together so perfectly.

I agree for the most part but this movie still isn't doing anything special for me, it feels like yesterday I was watching spider man 3 in the cinema.

At least this reboot is going to be more respectful to its source material. This is exactly what Warner Bros needs to do w/ Batman. My expectations for Marc Webb are pretty high.

The film is going to be a total success. The cast is insanelt talented. I don't think a superhero movie has ever had this many incredible actors. This Peter Parker is sure to be nothing short of amazing. Marc Webb made 500 Days of Summer, which was an insanely good romance, funny and insightful, which is basically what Spider-Man is. The darker tone is perfectly fifine with me. The suit is new and original, which is essentially what we should want in a reboot. At the end of the day, its Spider-Man. And we, along with the rest of the world, love Spider-Man.

Good article. Agree with everything, especially the bit about Web-shooters. The "other" trilogy totally missed out on showing how smart Peter really is. Among Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Hank McCoy and Bruce Banner, Peter is easily one of the smartest people in the entire Marvel Universe. It needs to be shown. Everyone called him a genius but it was never illustrated. Saying a bunch of fancy words from the dictionary doesn't really make him anywhere near close to genius.

@hawkeye07 - I'm looking forward more to The Avengers, but I have to agree with TrueRedBlue, there are some heavyweight actors in TASM: Martin Sheen and Sally Field pretty much take a massive dump on every actor in The Avengers, and having seen Garfield in pretty much everything he's done so far (including the British TV dramas he's starred in), I'm looking forward to him doing for Peter Parker what Christopher Reeve did for Clark Kent - break the mould.

Don't get me wrong, RDJ is amazing, it's just Stark isn't exactly a role where he has to stretch himself. I've always found ScarJo (sorry Scarlett!) to be a bit hit and miss. Sam Jackson generally just hams it up. The two Chris' are still in the springtime of their acting careers. I've found Renner to be a bit two dimensional, but he won't get much screen time anyway.

I suppose Avengers has at least one big hitter, in the critics eyes at least, and that's Mark Ruffalo. Like Garfield, I expect him to define his character and set the standard, becoming the reference point for any future portrayals.

I was reading an article at the weekend about the upcoming CBM's and the purported budgets for each movie, and TDKR, MOS and TASM all outshine The Avengers budget by around roughly the same amount, and all I can put this down to is the amount paid to the talent involved (writers, directors, actors). Bale, Crowe, Costner, Hathaway, Oldman, Field, Sheen, Caine - they will all cost big bucks.

Whereas Marvel have budgeted really well, allowing them to splash out on the odd occasion for some more expensive talent (Paltrow, Lee-Jones, Norton - Portman signed on for Thor before she won the Oscar so I imagine Marvel got a steal there). Marvel took a massive gamble with RDJ signing him on a multi-flick deal given his track record, so I imagine his fee will be quite small. Sam Jackson's fee won't have been much considering the amount of screen time he's been getting. And then everyone else will pretty much cost pittance.
