Defending The "Spider-Man" Cast Members (So Far)

I am doing this article to defend Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans, who all have been panned by some in the roles of Spidey himself, Gwen Stacy and Dr. Curt Connors.

I am really tired over the constant arguing about whether Garfield is right for Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and everyone complaining about Emma Stone being better for Mary Jane then Gwen. Rhys Ifans is not so much complained about though... so I am doing this article to try to show everyone there is nothing to be worried about.

ANDREW GARFIELD is PETER PARKER/SPIDER-MAN:

Andrew Garfield, 27, who can be seen in the recent "The Social Network" and other films such as "Lions for Lambs" and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", was cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man back in July 2010.

The foundation of fans are torn about Garfield in the role, many have beleived he has solidified himself as a good Parker ever since, some have hated him for the role ever since to this day, while some was originally against him and has warmed up, or the opposite.

It is clear one of the biggest concerns is his age. How can a 27 year old convincingly play a High School student? Well, some actors that are much older then what is expected can sometimes have the look down just right. The only major downfall to doing that is while it can pay off, there is a great chance thr actor could start looking there age in sequels.

Another common complaint, but albeit ridiculous, his that his ears and neck are too big to fit into the costume. Give me a break, when people start nitpicking things like that it is clear they are just reaching for anything to tear Andrew a new one. Classic fanboyism.

Up above is Andrew appearing in "Sugar Rush", which was a BBC series that ran back in 2005. Granted, that was five years ago but Andrew certainly has the young, high schooler look perfected so well. If they can make Andrew look somewhat like how he was in that show, people could forget he is actually in his mid 20s. We already know his acting is pitch perfect, and his dedication to the Spider-Man legacy is something special. How can Andrew fail?

Next up is Emma Stone, who was originally supposed to play Mary Jane Watson, but due to a script revision was recast as Gwen Stacy. Funny enough, despite that you would think Emma Stone is a natural redhead, she is a natural blonde which is one pro already for Emma as Gwen.

One complaint people have is that she is better suited for Mary Jane, which I feel is a little naive to say because how do we know that for sure? Her roles she has had certainly can point out she would be good for it, but she very likely could end up being the ideal Gwen Stacy.

Another is that she was cast because she is Sony's "it" girl and not because she actually fit the role. Yes, Sony certainly loves them some Emma so I am sure Emma was really in major consideration just because of that. But hey, that does not mean Emma does not fit Gwen. Personally, I am under the beleif she will surprise.

Rhys Ifans has been given warm reception as far as I have seen in the role of Dr. Curt Connors, who is set to transform into The Lizard in the film.

Ifans is a BAFTA award winner, like Garfield, and has shown an amazing range of acting throughout his career. Playing Dr. Connors should certainly be something Ifans is capable of, and he should knock it out of the park.

The only quip I and many others have had was that Ifans looks nothing like Connors. For me, I did not go as far as to say he could not be though because of course being that he is an actor he would just have his look changed up for the film.

After coming across a picture of him in "Nanny McPhee Returns", and him in an interview about "Hannibal Rising", I have figured out he is magnificent for Connors. But just to point out to people that are bummed about Dylan Baker not getting to play the role again and finally transform into The Lizard, Baker would have done a sheerly brilliant portrayal of Connors if he had actually been able to do so. The fact is however, Dr. Connors is a major character in the Spider-Man series and at the end of the day it is just important that the character be adapted, not who the actor is necessarily. As long as the actor fits best in looks, acting, and everything that needs to be taken in account, it would work.

"Spider-Man" is going to be directed by Marc Webb, set for July 3, 2012, with Andrew, Emma and Rhys all set so far for it.
