It might seem a bit silly to analyze a trailer in such detail but I'm very interested in the vastly differing opinions I have heard on this. Right off the bat let me say that I thought the trailer was very good, and although I will be criticizing certain elements of it, overall I think it did it's job and heightened excitement for what is looking sure to be a great movie. Of course there is a "but" coming!
BUT, people are going on about it (as people so often do when a new trailer for any big CBM hits) like it's the best thing ever, mind blown, OMG, faints with excitement etc etc. I'm just not getting that from it at all. I'll talk about why but first what about what did work. Well, most of it to be honest. Andrew Garfield seems like he will make a great Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but I don't think anyone who has seen this guy act in pretty much any of his other roles would have questioned that anyway. He looks the part too though, overcoming (imo at least) a few concerns about him being too lanky/thin for the role - I even got used to that hair while watching the 2and a half minute trailer! His Spidey seems to be a more wise cracking, less whiny version than Tobey Maguire's previous take in the Sam Raimi movies. I also really like how the new costume looks. I had my concerns, like most others, when we saw the first set pics but I think it really works when actually seen on film. Emma Stone had too little to do to really judge her Gwen Stacy but she seemed (and looked) fine, likewise the rest of the cast. The tone works for me, I like that slightly darker/grittier feel they seem to be going with. It suggests there will be a nice even mix of drama, action and humor..but with maybe a bit more edge than the previous movies. The dialog was also spot on, while nothing blew my mind I didn't cringe either which is always a good sign.
So what didn't I like? Well, did anyone else just find it slightly...dull? I better explain myself there. Yes it had quite a bit of action, it just didn't seem too fresh to me. Say what you want about Sam Raimi's movies but he treated us to our first big screen Spidey and our first glimpse at big budget web swinging/wall crawling/crook catching action. Was there anything vastly new or improved about what we saw here? I personally think his first two
Spider-Man movies are among the best CBMs we have had. While Marc Webb and co insist that this version will differ significantly, this new trailer appears to follow many of the same beats. It looks like we will be getting the same high school origin story, the coming to terms with his powers and responsibilities after his Uncle Ben buys it etc. And more importantly, it seems that the previous "mentor/villan" roles held by Osborne/Goblin and Octavias/Octopus will simply be replaced by Connors/Lizard. Parker feels responsible for turning a good man bad, sets out to rectify things, most likely at great cost to himself and/or his relationships. I'm sure there will be a few surprises in store in the actual movie, but for all intents and purposes we can pretty much work out the entire plot from that trailer..and it really isn't that different! And speaking of the villain, my biggest concern was how awful the Lizard looked. I know I know, we only got a few brief glimpses but they were enough to make out the overall creature design, and faithful to Steve Ditko's original concept of not, I thought it was laughable. To me Spidey looked like he was fighting one of those crappy plastic toys we have seen in merchandise articles. Literally. I'm obviously going to wait until we see more before passing a final judgment but these are my thought solely based on the above trailer.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. As I said I do think it was a good trailer and I can't wait to see the movie, but mind blown? Nope. What do you guys think?
