SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Director Reveals Why Two Key HOMECOMING Characters Don't Return In The Sequel

We learned months ago that [SPOILER] and [SPOILER] wouldn't factor into Spider-Man: Far From Home, and now director Jon Watts has elaborated on his decision to not include them in the sequel...

Spider-Man: Homecoming ended with Mac Gargan trying to get the wall-crawler's secret identity out of Adrian Toomes, and when the casting process for Spider-Man: Far From Home was taking place, it was reported that both characters would return for the sequel.

Well, it was back in May that was finally debunked and there's no sign of Michael Keaton or Michael Mando in the Marvel Studios movie. Now, though, director Jon Watts has explained why that's the case. "We never really found the right moment to do something like that. It's always just about it being right for the story and not just some sort of shoehorned-in cameo," he explained.

However, it doesn't sound like the door is completely closed when it comes to a possible return. "But I do love the idea that they're both still out there, and I like the idea that as we move forward with these films, we're building out this rich world that we can continually draw from."

Fans will be hoping that means the formation of the Sinister Six somewhere down the line, and there has to be some sort of payoff to that tease. After all, who knows what happened to both men following the Snap, and assuming they weren't dusted, there's a very good chance they're now free!

What do you guys think about Watts' remarks about the villains not returning in the sequel?

Bring in Doc Ock!

@DVonShakari - Too soon everyone will compare it to Spider-Man 2.

@DoubleD - too soon? They've done Green Goblin twice already.

@DoubleD - It really isn't too soon. The next Spidey film will be out 2021. That's 17 years after Spider-Man 2

@JoJo1982 - Failed because it was not handled properly, not because the Green Goblin is not an interesting villain.
It's been 15 years without Doc Ock on the big screen, and we've already seen 3 different Spider-Men in the same time-span. So yeah, Marvel Studios could easily go for a new version of Doc Ock, in the MCU.

@OuzoPowerMan -
I'd rather not see the MCU tackle Doc Ock.

I dont believe they would do the character justice as they would avoid using practical effects and would be hesistant to make the character similar to the comics because Sony already did that.

A lot of the choices behind MCU Spider-man is attempting to distance itself from the Sony films while also establishing a universe to allow an easy transition to Miles Morales.

The MCU will never do Doc Ock justice in regards to being afraid of the villain or in terms of making people have as much of an emotional roller coaster as Spider-man 2 did with the character.

Josh c’mon man. That’s a spoiler in the title. How about saying they explain why these characters didn’t return. You’re killing me smalls

They were never announced to be in the film anyways

@JoJo1982 - if it was announced or not. Based on the first one I thought there might be some continuation of the story. Maybe an Easter egg to the sinister 6. You never know. Fact is I wanted to go in not knowing anything for sure. Just saying there is better ways to word that title.

Love it. Now that's good storytelling. Besides, that post credits scene with Vulture and Mac Gargan was pretty obvious. Gargan wanted to get a group to kill Spidey, but Vulture respected Spidey too much to give out his identity.

End of their stories.

@KWilly - But let's be honest, they'll still probably join the Sinister 6 at some point down the line. Their stories are definitely not over. We never even got to really see Scorpion in action
DTor91
DTor91 - 6/28/2019, 7:15 AM
@KWilly - I always thought it made sense that Vulture shouldn’t come back based on how he had changed on Peter by the end, but that is most definitely not the end for Gargan. They wouldn’t waste a cameo like that and not pay it off with a full take on Scorpion. The seed was planted, it’s being given time to grow.

@joshwilding The title is a spoiler, not cool.

I tried to watch your interview instead, included in the article, which also spoiled something else for me before a minute in.

Jon Watts is big time, you gotta clean this up, brother.

@JoshWilding - "Jon Watts confirmed that the Scorpion and Vulture won't be in the movie back in MAY."

Because we've started believing things Marvel directors say in interviews now?

"and look forward to now being accused of posting clickbait. :)"

I wonder who's fault that is..

@LiteraryJoe - Dude, Jon Watts confirmed that the Scorpion and Vulture won't be in the movie back in MAY. That's been reported on here multiple times and across pretty much every other website out there. I've specifically been asked by Sony not to share any spoilers until next week and I don't see how mentioning something NOT in a movie can be considered one. As for that interview, the studio doesn't consider anything in there a spoiler, so you're really reaching.

However, as saying that something isn't in a movie is clearly considering a spoiler to some (which blows my mind ten years into writing for this site), I've now changed the headline and teaser image...and look forward to now being accused of posting clickbait. :) Oh, and the articles in question:

Gargan has to become the final Spider-Slayers, after the Spider has defeated the other creations of Spencer Smythe and his benefactor (Norman Osborn).

DalekCraigWasson - 6/28/2019, 9:51 AM
@Repian - Combining Smythe/The Spider-Slayers/Scorpion into one plot line makes a lot of sense, especially considering someone else's role in the creation of both creations...

Spider Slayers would be terrible in the MCU they have never handled robots, drone armies or generic groups/armies well.

They need to stop setting up consequences if they just plan on ignoring them.

The Raimi series and TASM series had its issues, but both had consequences. Spider-man 2, found by many to be one of the best Spider-man movies, was almost entirely focused around consequences. MCU Peter/Spider-man has no major consequences, nothing that will affect him or the audience.

Homecoming, Infinity War, Endgame - Peter's secret is revealed, Peter dies and Peter returns from the dead... and none of it means anything because its all weightless and unexplored with surrounding characters.

Now it sounds like Far From Home is going to avoid tackling how 3.5 billion people react to being dead instead and being five years younger than everyone who survived the snap - instead all the focus is on Iron Man dying, something that does not feel earnt because the world was divided on its views of Iron Man after Ultron, The Accords, Civil War, etc...
