SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Director Explains Why The Webhead Won't Have His Spidey-Sense In The Movie

At this point, fans had pretty much figured that Peter Parker wouldn't be utilising his classic Spidey-Sense in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and in a new interview director Jon Watts explains why that is...

When we saw Spider-Man going up against a contingent of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Captain America: Civil War something seemed to be missing, as several characters were able to get the drop on The Webhead without his Spidey-Sense tingling and alerting him to the imminent danger.

Some figured this would be addressed in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it turns out this MCU incarnation of the iconic Marvel hero simply doesn't have that ability... at least, not yet.

While being interviewed by CinemaBlend, director Jon Watts explained why the Spider-Sense was ditched:

I feel like we have seen a lot of Spider Sense in the previous films, so we didn't really lean into that as hard as they have in the previous films. But I do think it is a really interesting thing to explore.

Though this is sure to annoy some purists, having seen the movie I can tell you that this doesn't really make a whole lot of difference - but that's not to say I didn't miss it. Perhaps that on top of all of Stark's suit-upgrades would have seemed like overkill?

What do you guys make of this? Sound off below, and be sure to check out Spider-Man: Homecoming when it swings into theaters later this week.

He doesn't actually say he doesn't have Spider-Sense, he simply said they didn't put much emphasis on it. We've seen his Spider-Sense in Civil War.

*Lights cigar*

We don't need everything right away. Let's explore that in the sequel.

@Tonic24k @TheIron - And Amy Pascal said...

"When we first made the deal with Marvel we pitched a concept that had Spidermans sense act like a deja vu type of aspect where he forsaw what was about to happen before it happened. Basically mini premonitions before something was about to transpire. It was the most realistic approach to the Spidersense."

Kevin Feige's face during that response:

That's like saying 'we dont need Superman to fly, lets explore that in the sequel'

It's an aspect of his character the same way that the Spider-sense is an aspect of Spider-man.

@Scarilian - Reviews would infer otherwise. It was obviously not needed just yet. And I think that parallel is a stretch. Superman flies, Spider-man web-slings. I would compare Superman's "super intellect" to Spider-Man's spidey sense if anything. And when have we seen that explored in any Superman flick?

Bottomline, his spidey sense isn't that integral for his cinematic debut. (Civil War or this)

@Scarilian - Which btw, key word here is "explored". Doesn't mean it isn't present. I feel like during the CW fight scene we see a bit of it.

- He's clearly using it in the movie.

See the clip I posted above (2 main comments up).

Spider-man does not have his Spider-Sense at all in Spider-man Homecoming. There are also multiple continuity errors regarding how long it has been since Avengers.

He has his Spider-sense demonstrated on a small scale in Civil War, but nothing similar happens in Spider-man Homecoming other than at one point he pre-fires his web when saving a falling lift, though he may have seen it falling or heard the screaming so he knew it was falling.
