After scoring an estimated $22.1 million on Friday, 20th Century Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes is safely steamrolling its way to a #1 finish at the weekend box office with a projected $55-$57 million domestic debut.
While a solid start, it is about a 20% drop off from Matt Reeves' previous installment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $72.6 million during the same weekend in 2014, although this dip can likely be attributed to the bleaker tone of the latest entry and to heavier competition this time around.
Meanwhile, as expected, Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming will see an approximate 60% fall this weekend for $47-$50 million in its second frame. With those numbers, it would face a bigger drop than both Wonder Woman (43%) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (56%) did earlier this summer, however, considering that neither of those films had to face a film on the same critical caliber as War for the Planet of the Apes in their respective second weekends, Homecoming continues to perform quite admirably. The current projections are essentially on par with the second weekends of Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The Jon Watts-directed feature is expected to cross the $200 million domestic mark by the end of the weekend, possibly reach upwards of $210 million, which means a $300-$400 million final domestic tally is currently in play. Worldwide, analysts are expecting the film to cross at least the $400 million mark when the international numbers come in on Monday, potentially nearing $500 million.
So, what do you guys think? Which film did you see this weekend? Sound off with your thoughts below!
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
