It's Looking Increasingly Unlikely SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Will Be Released Next March As Planned

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in theaters next March, but a new report suggests there's no way the threequel will meet that date...there may not even be a completed frame!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews earlier this month and looks set to be another box office hit for Sony Pictures' Spider-Man franchise.

When the movie's cast and crew were doing the rounds to promote the sequel a few weeks ago, they all played surprisingly coy when asked about next March's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Spider-Gwen actress Hailee Steinfeld even confirmed that, after years of working on this second instalment, she's yet to record a single line of dialogue for the threequel!

Vulture (via Toonado.com) recently posted a story sharing some insights into what it was like working on Across the Spider-Verse (spoiler alert: it wasn't good). An animator who was part of the team contributing to the latest movie - named "Stephen" to protect their identity - is convinced Beyond won't meet that planned release date.

"They’ve announced that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March of next year," he says. "I've seen people say, 'Oh, they probably worked on it at the same time.' There’s no way that movie’s coming out then. There's been progress on the pre-production side of things."

"But as far as the production side goes, the only progress that's been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts."

Stephen adds, "Everyone’s been fully focused on Across the Spider-Verse and barely crossing the finish line. And now it's like, 'Oh, yeah, now we have to do the other one.'"

Some online scoopers have strongly hinted that the final chapter of this trilogy could be pushed back to as late as 2026, an agonising wait for fans who are excited to see how the story concludes.

We're assuming the release date hasn't been changed in an effort to avoid bad press that has any sort of impact on box office takings. Some moviegoers, for example, may be reluctant to watch this middle chapter if they know it's going to be years before the final part follows.

For now, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still set for a March 29, 2024 release.

Idk why they announced it if it wasn’t even in late pre prod

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Originally they announced it as "Across the Spider-Verse Part 2". I think to emotionally prepare the audience for part 1 to have a cliffhanger ending.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Considering that Lord and Miller were asking complete do-overs on fully finished and rendered scenes (big no-no in the animation field, btw.), they probably thought they would be finished with Across and could start pre-production on Beyond sooner than they did.

@The1st - was it though? thats just an incomplete movie at this point and if it did end on a cliffhanger like kill bill vol 1 or matrix reload the sequel should have been released the same year.

@mastakilla39 - So...ESB is an incomplete film? Maybe should have been released the same year, but it's Hollywood so it wasn't.

As long as animators are properly paid, and work under decent conditions, I can wait.
2026 sounds ridiculous, though.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I'll echo this sentiment. There has to be some middle ground where the animators are given enough time, pay, and suitable working conditions without completely losing the momentum from this film. 1st quarter of 2025 seems reasonable (so long as animators don't begin a strike as well).

@TheRose - December 2024/march 2025 sounds reasonable, that is already a 1 year delay...or maybe they didnt start any work on the second part yet, only way I could understand why they need 3 years to make it...on the other hand, they said the Miles escape sequence took them 4 years to make, and considering the third act of this movie will more than likely be INSANE...it could be.
In any case, Sony announcing it was coming out on march 2024 was absurd.

@philinterrupted - I don't know what people have with this talking point. It is just not true. Across had a beginning middle and end. A full story. It was just not Miles' story this time. It was Gwen's. The movie started with her and ended with her. And in between she went through a complete emotional journey. Yes, the movie also set up a storyline that is going to be completed in Beyond. But it's not like Across had no legit ending. Why are people suddenly confused by the concept of a cliffhanger?

@Drace24 - I know the concept of a cliffhanger. That doesn't mean I gotta like it.

And for as good as ATSV was, I did not like how it ended. Or lack thereof.

@philinterrupted - Gwen begins the movie looking for an escape from her relationships and responsibilities. She is still mourning the death of Peter and rather than reach out to her friends and family, she dreams of another serendipitous escape. The events of "Into the Spider-Verse" opened her eyes past the petty rebellion of being a Vigilante. Instead, now she wants to be able to flit freely wherever her heart desires, without taking any responsibility for the people that love and depend on her.

When Miguel offers the opportunity to join the Multiversal Spider-Men, she jumps on the opportunity, especially after her father appears to betray her--he was going to bring her in, seemingly confirming that she really is alone and removing her guilt to leave.

She then works with the Spider-Men, living the exciting and ever-moving life that she was chasing before. All the while, she is dodging he responsibility to her home universe.

When she gets a mission in Miles' Universe, she doubles down on these bad habits. She lies to both Miles and Miguel/Jess, ignoring all responsibility she has to either to enact her own selfish actions.

When Miles brings this to her attention, she is initially defensive, but by the end of the movie, she sees the error of her ways. She goes back to her reality, mends her relationship with her father, and resolves to do better by following Miles' example.

@KWilly - you make no sense. Do you hate all post credit scenes also? Because guess what. They are the same as cliffhangers.

@Drace24 - Cliffhangers are always divisive, mostly because people want the satisfaction of a resolution. I'm with you on all your points--This was absolutely Gwen's film--but I can also see why others are a bit uneasy with the ending. There is no certainty that things will turn out okay, or that it will be well written. It's purposefully anxiety inducing to lure back the audience for the finale.

Funnily enough, this discussion about Cliffhangers/extended stories has me thinking of Dickens and how he only released stories a chapter or two at a time in a magazine. His stories could go on for years of publication, with no end every truly in sight. The moment you thought you'd get momentum, he could introduce an entirely new plot thread or cast of characters. Imagine if readers then held the same dissatisfaction held by those today about a lack of resolution.

Maybe not the most apt comparison, but the impatience shared by a greedy studio and jilted fanbase made me ponder if we can even tell stories at our own pace anymore. Deadlines must be met, after all...

@TheRose - to be fair, she didn’t go back to mend her reality with her dad. Plus he was the one who had the growth in that story.

And though the things you described are in the movie. They most certainly aren’t the main story points. Just because the movie starts with her doesn’t mean it’s her story. If the had focused mainly on her story sure this could be something but she was anything but the main arc.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/28/2023, 4:10 PM
@philinterrupted - You're right, she didn't choose to go back to her reality on her own--to me, that is what makes her choice to confront her problems with her father that much more meaningful and arc-fulfilling.

I don't believe Character arc and Plot do not necessarily need to be entwined. However, I would argue that she was a main focus of the plot because it is really her inciting action (or rather, her inaction) that leads to the Spot's victory. I agree that the focus shifts a lot, but I view that as a feature of an ensemble, not a flaw. I'm certain we will see the focus shift back to Miles in the next film, but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't explore more with Miguel and Peter B. Parker in the next one.

@TheRose - she was a part of the cold open of the movie. And it was an amazing scene. That’s the only part of the movie that’s through her perspective. But the majority of this movie is thru Miles perspective. He’s chasing her. This is not from her perspective. I’m not denying she doesn’t have character beats, but she is not THE main character of the story. She is one of the leads.
And when she goes back to her world, her dad is the one that confronts the situation not her. She didn’t change at all to make that work, he did. From the moment she left him in the beginning of the movie, he had all that time to contemplate what happened, and that made him change.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/28/2023, 4:42 PM
@philinterrupted - I don't think we are really disagreeing--we are just looking at this from different perspectives. Clearly this franchise is built upon Miles and he is the Hero of the story. The plot revolves around him and the actions his "nemesis" takes to get even with Miles. Don't get me wrong, Miles has a full arc as well. To me, his story resonates as a continuation of the themes from the first installment--the responsibility of power, managing expectations of your family, and pushing against preconceptions to become the hero you were always meant to be. In this movie, Miles' parents perception of their son has shifted. They used to think he was irresponsible and immature, but seeing his growth, now they worry that he is moving faster than they can keep up with. It's a compelling story of family, but not one that we see play out to its conclusion yet---that will be saved for Beyond the Spider-Verse.

While Gwen isn't the one to initiate the conversation with her father, her "action" is that she actually slows down to listen to what he has to say. She could have blown him off, the way she had been blowing off most everyone in favor of her own whims, but she chose to accept his words. It's been a while since I was a teen, but I remember wanting to shut out my parents when they were trying to reach out to me. I think the scene was handled well, but clearly Gwen has more growing to do before she is truly an adult. Again, we will see more of this in Beyond, but I think the arc of choosing Escape vs. Embrace has concluded for Gwen.

I followed up with you on this because you asked what Gwen's arc was and I hope I've shed some light on the story to help point out that she did go through an emotional journey. If she wasn't the main character to you, that's fine!--There are a lot of character arcs going on and everyone is bound to latch onto one narrative over another. But I don't think we can downplay her role for other viewers.

@TheRose - hey, I respect what you’re saying. My point is that none of these characters arcs felt complete. There is certainly character development. But as a movie that can stand in its own, it’s not complete.
It’s feel this would have been better accomplished if this movie set Gwen as the main character and given her something bigger to overcome. It could have been seeing her journey in the Spider team with Miguel. Then the next movie can be Miles again.
At 2 1/2 hours there was too much thrown in and not focused on for a satisfying story.
I imagine when Beyond the a Spiderverse comes out things will feel complete. But like Dune this is half and NEEDS part 2 to be a full tale.

As hyped as I am to see the third movie, I'd rather they pushed it back and gave the animators time to work on it without losing their minds with stress and also ensure we get a great final product, rather than rush it out and abuse everyone working on it and possibly get something that doesn't live up to the other two
