The Flash may be running on fumes at the box office, but anyone who blames "superhero fatigue" on audience disinterest need only look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for proof that a great movie, regardless of genre, will still bring butts to seats.
Sony Pictures' critically-acclaimed sequel has now passed the $500 million milestone at the worldwide box office after less than three weeks on general release (with $290.4 million domestic and $215.9 million overseas, its global tally is $506.3 million).
The animated Spidey adventure exceeded expectations with a domestic opening of $120 million, and quickly surpassed its predecessor's global total. The movie has been performing spectacularly both overseas and in the U.S. since, and shows no signs of slowing down.
Does it stand a chance of passing $1 billion and catching up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become one of the most successful animated films of all time? That might be a tall order, but we wouldn't bet against Miles Morales and his wall-crawling counterparts.
