SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Director Talks Cliffhanger Ending And Reveals [SPOILER]'s Real Name

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Kemp Powers has broken down the movie's shocking cliffhanger ending, revealing the true name of that character and teasing their role in the next instalment.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse successfully managed to keep many of its biggest surprises under wraps, including the fact Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight) had been cast as a villainous Miles Morales Variant.

In the sequel's closing moments, Miles comes face-to-face with his Earth-42 doppelganger, a character we quickly learn is his world's Prowler. That's where we leave things, of course, and co-director Kemp Powers recently shed some light on the unexpected twist during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter (via Toonado.com).

"We did some tweaks to it after screening it for audiences, but that cliffhanger was pretty much in the cards for a long, long time," the filmmaker confirms. "It was about making sure that while we did end on a cliffhanger, we had complete emotional arcs for the main characters for miles and for Gwen."

"We see them evolve from one place in the beginning of the film to another place at the end of the film, and that they have complete emotional arcs."

Powers would go on to say that this Prowler is actually called Miles G. Morales and hinted at a much larger role for the apparent villain when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse rolls around next March.

"It was such an exciting character, it was actually hard for us to keep it a secret," he says. "Oh, man, the design is so different, it’s such a visual departure. And to explore how Miles might have developed if he were in a different world where he didn’t have his father, he was mentored by his uncle, what kind of kid would he be?"

"For people who see Miles G. Morales at the end, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. There’s a lot to learn about that character. It’s a very, very interesting character."

There's clearly more to him than meets the eye then, but Powers declined to reveal any new details about Beyond the Spider-Verse or whether it's been affected by the WGA strike.

Hopefully, we'll have more news to share with you soon.

@OmegaBlack13 - im aware they’re braids.
They look good on Travis Scott, but they look dumb on Miles in the few minutes he’s on screen.
They look exactly like pig tails.

I think the movies great, but you don’t need to bend over backwards to defend it like this LOL

I'm expecting a last minute heroic turn for Miles G. Chooses to save his alt father when it comes to the crunch.

But what i really need is Chris Barnes' 90s Spidey to be a player in the last one. I mean he was doing Spider-Verse before it was cool. C'mon man.

@TheManWithoutFear - fret not, he'll be there! I'm still banking on the Spider Carnage storyline playing out, he was on the poster. Here's to hoping lol

@bobevanz - Imagine if we found out that Miguel didn;t even start the Spider-Society. 90s Spidey did and Miguel just took it over. That would be so cool. Then 90s Spidey is brought back in to kind of bring it back to check.

@TheManWithoutFear - Same. Maybe a kind of antihero. The spider was meant for him too. I wonder how he’ll react realizing that. Could have changed everything for him.

Surely the death of Miles G.'s father turned G. into a villain. So when he prevents the death of our Miles' father, he becomes the hero.

This is a redemption story for Miles G. Morales.

I never understood the naming convention here or with Peter B. Parker. Miles and Peter’s middle names were already Gonzalo and Benjamin respectively, having doppelgängers regularly add the initial doesn’t make them different names.
Origame

@OmegaBlack13 - ...it's just a way of differentiating the variants. Like how in no way home, they called the different variants Peter 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Sure, you can use that naming convention for other characters, but the fact this one said "just include my middle initial" makes conversations easier.

Otherwise this happens:

@OmegaBlack13 - It's just a little quirk that helps the audience who may be less familiar with the multiverse concept to keep track of things, and helps differentiate their personalities too - some people do refer to themselves with their middle initial so it's like, in one universe the variant does that whereas in the other they don't.

It's also kind of a meta joke in the case of Peter B. Parker because he's the second Peter we see in the first movie, and he's less put together than the Earth 1610 version was and is less willing and naturally inclined towards being a mentor to Miles than 1610 Peter was - so 1610 Peter would've been everyone's first choice, and Miles is left with option B/Peter B. instead.

@OmegaBlack13 - It's like David S. Goyer, the writer has the exact same middle name as David Goyer, the director of such films as Blade Trinity and The Invisible. But one of them is a legendary cbm and comics writer and the other is a forgotten, unsuccessful director.

@Origame @AC1 - I get that, I just think it would make more sense to make up an initial.

New Rockstars theory is interesting. 42 Miles isn't necessarily a villain but a compulsory criminal/laborer for the Sinister Six cartel that runs the city in Earth 42. We here Jonah mention them on the radio broadcast.
