THE SPIDER WITHIN: A SPIDER-VERSE STORY - Sony's SPIDER-MAN Short Film Gets YouTube Premiere Date

Sony Pictures Animation has announced that The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story will premiere on YouTube later this month, and along with that release date, we have an amazing new look at Miles Morales.

It's been revealed today (via Toonado.com) that Sony will release its new animated short, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, on Sony Pictures Animation's YouTube channel at 6 am PT on March 27.

It first debuted during last year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and the film - which is set in the world of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - puts the spotlight on Miles Morales and his struggles with mental health.

According to VarietyThe Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story "follows Miles Morales/Spider-Man as he struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, student and Spider-Man."

"In navigating those pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil."

This digital release comes in partnership with the "Kevin Love Fund" and is part of their mental health-focused lesson plan, The Hero Within. That aims to get students to tell their own stories through the lens of mental health awareness through an interactive curriculum, including a creative storyboard activity.

"Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives," Jarelle Dampier, director of The Spider Within says in a press release. "We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience."

"My intention is that 'The Spider Within' can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys - and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales."

KLF founder, professional basketball player and mental health advocate Kevin Love adds, "My hope for the short film would be for everyone, especially young people, to understand that your feelings are valid and that you are not alone in this."

"You see it with Spider-Man in the short film, where Miles has a trusted confidante. He is able to take a walk with his dad and express what he’s going through. We can all learn from that – how important it is to reach out to someone, express your true emotions, speak your truth and not hold everything inside."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released in theaters last year and narrowly missed out on winning the "Best Animated Feature" Oscar earlier this month (The Boy and the Heron proved a worthy victor). The final instalment of the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, has no release date.

A new still from The Spider Within has also been released highlighting Shameik Moore's Miles Morales.

Miles Morales haters are the worst...

Why can't there be more than one Spider-Man?

There's been multiple Captain Americas, Hulks, Captain/Ms Marvels, Thors, etc. that have all gone by the same name.

Why are people so opposed to Miles being Spider-Man?

marvel72 - 3/21/2024, 10:25 PM
@DankMan - I am opposed to others calling themselves other heroes.

There is only true version of said character.

Steve Rogers is the only Captain America
Bruce Banner is the only Hulk
Logan is Wolverine
Peter Parker is Spider-Man
Thor is the only Thor

@DankMan - Miles Morales is a great character and will eventually get his live-action dues, but to most Spider-Man is Peter Parker in the same way that Batman is Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent is Superman.

They're the names that have been most commonly associated with the character for decades. Before you were even jizz in your pops nut sack.

@marvel72 - You can say that is your head cannon, but its not true.

@DarthAlgar - To most... and that won't be for much longer. Peter Parker will always be Spider-Man, he's not the only one anymore though. The Spiderverse movie's success proves that point.

@DankMan - The passing of the mantle crap only works with characters who were originally set up as mantle's ala The Phantom, Black Panther. When the character isn't around for long, it's easier for people to accept but with long established ongoing characters, it's a different story. There have been multiple Batmen, "Cap"s, "Hulk"s, "Wolverine"s, "Thor"s throughout the years and none of them stick because it's become a lazy ass trope which writer's use to try and absorb the OG's fanbase instead of earning their attention the long and hard way. It's one thing to be trained under a popular character but eventually they have to move out of their masters shadow like Dick did when he became Night Wing instead of a Batman 2.0 clone. Miles when he's Miles is fine but when you have to degrade the OG to prop up the new blood, it almost never work's out and intentional or not, it just comes off as disrespectful to what came before. When we get dumb lines from writer's having him address himself as the one and only Spiderman, that's just not going to sit well with Spiderman fans. When you have writer's having him get with Peter's Ex's it just looks like they're giving him straight up hand me downs or sloppy seconds and that's not how you win the fans over. Miles would have a better shot at taking over the name of The Prowler title and try having him turn a negative name into a positive.

@HashTagSwagg - I just don't see how Miles being Spider-Man degrades Peter Parkers character at all. If anything its given Peter his Robin equivalent.

HashTagSwagg - 3/21/2024, 10:54 PM
@DankMan - Watch the cutscenes for Spider-man 2, Peter nearly dies by a phucking fridge mate and that's just the tip of the humiliation he goes through in that game.

@HashTagSwagg - Spider-Man has been nearly dying since the 60's, Miles Morales or not...

@DankMan - I feel the whole multiverse / Spiderverse /different timeline BS is having an overall negative effect on characters, it just dilutes the interest of the character. User Comment Image

@harryba11zack - Only when they are lazy with the writing. Which Spiderverse is not. The MCU multiverse though, I agree with you on that

@DankMan - Because he’s black. You’d never see this push back for Ben Reilly or the best example, Wally West. In fact, not only did fans actively start hating Wally when he was made black, they celebrated the return of the original white version even if there meant there was two Flash’s running around at the same time.

Doomsday8888 - 3/22/2024, 3:21 AM
Contrary to what this f*cking racist and absolute clown of a user says, people started hating the "le black flash" because they literally introduced him post Flashpoint as WALLY WEST there was NO TRACE of the OG ginger Wally he got replaced by this kid, you know, THE FLASH with more stories than even fricking Jay Garrick and Barry Allen.

So of course people cheered up when he came back and guess what? He didn't suddenly replace the black one, they co-exist eventhough Wallace (black Wally) is a nothing ass character.

Gosh, i wonder why people hated this move? What they love both Hal and John Stewart (le black Gree Lantern!?!?) But not black Wally?
It's almost as if people should love a teenage Black Peter Parker that replaces the og white Peter Parker???

F*ck you Batmaniac, go choke on a pack of white dicks.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 3/22/2024, 5:24 AM
@Doomsday8888 - There was no trace of most of the OG characters, because it was a reboot, hence why they canned it. But comic fans took a bigger issue with Wally because not only was a rebooted variant of the character, he was black, as they always do with POC, or are we going to pretend now the comic book fanbase isn’t notoriously known for their “old fashioned” views?

Next time though, @ me. There’s no reason for you to act this bitch made. You seem to be under the impression that because I don’t want ignore half you guys subtle racism on this site, calling me a racist will scare me off. But it won’t. Citing the same five black characters over and over doesn’t shield you. The dog whistling doesn’t work. And I will forever and always call out this type of shit, and I still remember how you, @Doomsday8888, was all the way bent out of shape when Black Panther became the success it is. 🫵🏽

Doomsday8888 - 3/22/2024, 6:24 AM
ahaha lol of course this pathetic racist f*ck pulled out Black Panther ahahah, shit lives rent free in his head!

So f*cking predictable.

I will always call you out with shit like this and i will tag you only when i feel the need to, keep refreshing every single thread just to check out my comments, loser.

Everyone here already figured out what kinda user you are, always ready with that race victim-card.

There are well respected black men and then there are pathetic🥷s like yourself and it's about time that we start to differentiate that.

For every Chadwick Boseman out there there are miserable people like Ray Fisher and Jonathan Majors, eat shit PlusUltra.

@HashTagSwagg - In their individual worlds they are the one and only Spider-Man. That’s like a whole story point with these movies, that they’re alone but in the grand scheme of the universe they aren’t.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 3/22/2024, 9:44 AM
@newhire13 - There was a Spider-man in that universe though, claiming to be the one and only Spiderman after having seeing Spiderman save your ass and then die protecting you is not a good way to honour the guy.
DankMan
DankMan - 3/22/2024, 10:57 AM
@HashTagSwagg - Peter Parker made a lot of mistakes early on too. He literally could have saved his uncle by stopping a criminal and didn't.

Part of being Spider-Man is growing into it.
BB8ANG
BB8ANG - 3/22/2024, 12:36 PM
@DankMan - Exactly. If I was to mention Spiderman to my younger family members they'd think of Miles Morales. The same thing happened with Wally West, John Stewart, and Robin, just to name a few. And it was not the end of the world.

Sony should also do a spin off short for the spider people, it'd be cool to finally see just where Spiderman gets his powers from. User Comment Image

As someone who struggles with anxiety & has had his share of panic attacks , this is gonna hit like a mother[frick]er isn’t it?.

Anyway , looking forward to seeing it still since I like this Miles & his world.

I do wonder when this is taking place though or if it’s even canon to the films?.

If it’s between Into & Across then I hope it doesn’t make Miles parents unsympathetic if the dad atleast knew he had mental health issues in the latter and didn’t seem to give him some grace when he forgot his cake for example.

If you read old Spider-Man comics (pretty much anything from the '60s to the '00s) Peter Parker basically has a panic attack every issue. They just didn't know what to call it then. This is like Stan Lee's Spider-Man at his most intense (like that classic Master Planner cliffhanger) but with a medical resolution.

My nephew just had a panic attack yesterday (he's under a lot of business stress), so I'm really glad that this is being done on such a brilliantly creative canvas for younger people to feel seen and to normalise this sort of stuff for everyone really. This isn't about a minority, everyone is in danger of letting it get to them too much.

God bless the Spider-verse crew.
