Marc Webb Talks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Teases Sequels And Expanded Universe

Ahead of tomorrow's big Comic-Con panel for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the guys at Movies.com had a lengthy chat with director Marc Webb today about the much-hyped sequel and beyond.
"There's always been a plan to extend this universe,"
Webb said. "To make a series of films that were interrelated and weren't purely episodic. That there were certain ongoing stories that were going to play out over multiple films. So, that's always been in the works and there's been some early talks about the nature of what those next two movies are. It's too early to talk about too many of the details, but if you pay attention to this film that's coming out, you may get a feeling and sense of what's to come in the future." When asked if he would be directing the third and fourth installments, Marc Webb admitted, "The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise. We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film"

On The Amazing Spider-Man 2 front, Marc Webb says, "Electro is a fantastically cinematic villain and there's something truly terrifying and godlike about his powers. And that's something that's been fun to develop and conceive of; not only visually, but conceptually how what happens when this creature, who's mythological in scope, is unleashed in New York City ... the visual spectacle of it is gonna be fantastic. We're doing some terrible things to Times Square, but it's gonna be fun to watch."

When reminded of the number of villains in the sequel compared to Sam Raimi's third installment, and questioned how he plans to avoid that same downfall, Marc Webb says, "One of the things about Spider-Man that's really fun is that the people who become villains often don't start out as villains." He adds, "Most of the relationships are based in love[?] in some ways. We're teasing out certain characters that may not be his main foes... but the main villain is going to be Electro." Whether fans will see horns on the Rhino, Webb replies with a simple "yes!" What do you think?

In “The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2,” for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers. The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014.

How about instead of focusing on the fourth film, you focus on the second film and make sure you don't [frick] it up.

You have yet to impress.

Seriously no matter how much this site shits on Nolan, the way he went about doing CBMs was the best.

Instead of focusing on the next story, he focused on the story at hand. Sure the Joker card at the end of Begins was too tease Joker for The Dark Knight but that scene comes straight from Year One. You even see that influence in Man of Steel.

Why doesn't more CBM series work that way? Of course the other 2 CBM series right now are Spider-Man and Superman.

As good as the MCU is, they don't have a main series and that will harm them. Sure they have Iron Man, but let's look at it a way. Marvel doesn't have Spider-Man and Wolverine & The X-Men. That's like if DC lost Batman and Green Lantern & The Corps. Iron Man's series is done and Cap isn't overly popular.

Fox is just bullshitting it as they go.

Seriously take it one film at a [frick]ing time.

Marvel Studios right now has movies for Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man, Avengers, Guardian of the Galaxy, Dr Strange, and others.

Sony has just Spider-Man.

It's easy when you got multiple characters.

You were saying? I don't care if Raimi ain't directing. I love both Nolan's and Burton's work and am open to others. What I want to see is Spider-Man done right and judging from TASM, this series doesn't look good.

First off, you have no [frick]ing idea why I called you a jester do you? And then you use the joke I used on you, on me. That's real [frick]ing creative. As creative as that Spider-Man suit in TASM2. Wait, Webb said he got it from Raimi.

He doesn't have scripts, yes. But he knows how the story will be going for the next 2 in mind and is preparing this film for those films.

Cheers.

People gotta remember David Goyer co-wrote Batman Begins with Nolan, and that's why there was a reference to The Joker at the end, just like Lex Luthor in Man of Steel. I think DC is playing it safe which is good for them, right now instead of rushing into other movies.

I think Green Latern was the movie that Warner Bros relied on at first to get them to a larger DC cinematic universe, and we all know how that went.

The amazing Spider-Man 2 is finished filming I think, so they can think ahead in the future if they want.

Plus, if you don't like TASM congrats. No need to come on EVERY article bashing it.

This is real world tone? Didn't Batman Begins do that? How about doing something new?

Also I want a Ultimate Spider-Man type tone. When the Black Suit comes I want a darker tone. Really mess with Spidey.

And didn't you defend Snyder saying he is only directing the film, he didn't have control over the story/script. So why bash Webb? Webb is in the same situation as Snyder.

Nolan was signed on for one Batman film with Begins. He never thought he would do a trilogy.

Also WB's sucks? Considering they produced 2 billion dollar Batman films, the Harry Potter series, and so many films I could go on, I think that you should shut up kid. You aren't smart enough to win this debate.

Webb's a more storytelling based director like Singer. Snyder is the type of director you give a script and say "make this look badass". Snyder's similar to Del Toro because Snyder's a more visual director.

I find it hilarious how both Guardians of the Galaxy and Cap 2 are both introducing just as many, if not more characters than TASM2, but people aren't bitching about them being cluster[frick]s cuz guess what??? THEY"RE MARVEL STUDIOS MOVIES!!!

Fanboy hypocrisy at it's finest.

I feel like TASM2 could be a great introduction to the Sinister Six, especially with all the villians in it, it just depends on whether it will seem believable and logical; and that depends on the writing.

I liked TASM but they introduced an interesting story arc with Peters true origin;,and then they abandoned it, to hopefully explore in sequels.
