Movie fans worldwide were thrown a killer curveball last month when it was reported that Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures had ended their four-year Spider-Man co-production partnership after five blockbuster feature films - four of which topped $1 billion at the worldwide box office, including this year's
Avengers: Endgame and
Spider-Man: Far From Home.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe already moving forward with a Spidey-less Phase 4, the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, played by 23-year-old British actor Tom Holland, now finds himself embarking on his own journey into Sony's Spider-Verse, which, despite two back-to-back hit films in 2018 (including an Oscar winner) still has much to prove before it can be considered a worthy alternative to Spidey's MCU exploits.
But even with the odds seemingly stacked against them, Holland does seem quite confident in Sony's ability to sustain and grow the Spider-Man franchise into the future, especially following the billion-dollar success of
Spider-Man: Far From Home.
In a lengthy profile with
GQ, he tells the mag, “
I’m not shy about expressing how incredible the last five years have been with Marvel. I’ve truly had the time of my life, and in so many respects, they have made my dreams come true as an actor. Sony has also been really good to me, and the global success of Spider-Man: Far From Home is a real testament to their support, skill and commitment. The legacy and future of Spidey rests in Sony’s safe hands. I really am nothing but grateful, and I’ve made friends for life along the way.”
While the future of the Spider-Verse remains a relative unknown for now, the upcoming slate has already been confirmed to feature
Morbius, with Daniel Espinosa (
Life) directing and Jared Leto (
Blade Runner 2049) starring, and
Venom 2, with Andy Serkis (
Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle) directing and Tom Hardy (
Venom) returning to star.
Sequels to
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with Joaquim Dos Santos directing and David Callaham writing the script, and
Spider-Man: Far From Home, with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers penning the script, are also in the works as is a female-centered animated Spider-Verse spinoff, with Lauren Montgomery expected to direct and Bek Smith writing the screenplay. Films involving Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat and Silver Sable are also rumored to be in some stage of development.
