Release Date: July 3, 2012 (USA)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone, Sally Field and Martin Sheen.
Directed by: Marc Webb
Written by: James Vanderbilt (initial screenplay),Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves (revised draft)

The Amazing Spider-Man is an American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Filming started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, 2 theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay.

I don't know if I would say I enjoyed it more than the original movie but then again I was 7 when tha movie came out. This movie was a lot of fun though I think that Andrew Garfield was great and so was Martin Sheen and Emma Stone. I also loved all the humor in the movie. The Lizard was a good vilain but I wih he had more screen time and a better motive to be evil.

Was great, surpasses any of the Raimi films...or, Raimi's Spider-Man, in particular. (Not sure if it surpasses Spider-Man 2.) I mean, both have pretty similar stories (and it's not just of the origin story) Webb's actually feels like an alternate take of Raimi's story, but I simply prefer this one over Raimi's.

It was good...was it fresh enough to warrant a reboot...meh, not so sure. I liked how Andrew and Emma portrayed their characters. They did a fantastic job, but some of the elements of the movie really didn't make any sense. For instance, he got bit by a spider...that was not necessarily unique, as there were a LOT of them. The fact that he got those powers in that way means anyone could get bit by any one of those Spiders and achieve the same result. Dr. Connors said all test subjects died (with cross genetic mutation)because they didn't have the right formula...yet Peter was still alive. Had Peter's father injected him with some serum when he was younger, maybe that would have made sense why he survived? I dunno...just a detail that kinda bugged me. All in all, good movie...but lacked that defining Spiderman moment like the scene on the subway train in Spiderman 2. I don't think they'll ever be able to top that.

I hated it. Too much teenage crap and the music was just horrible. Didn't care about the parents, lots of plot holes, Lizard was ok I guess. Nothing worth remembering.

Ben's death didn't make the same impact on Peter, with the responsibility and all. It only took Gwen's dad on a dinner table to make him realise what he should be doing, instead of looking for vengeance.

This movie is just a shadow of the first one. People will see it's faults soon enough.

Should had stick to a more mature Spiderman-Man in his late 20's.

I think that this version of Spider-Man was better than the Toby version.

Why are some people surprised about Sony agreeing to make Spider-Man a trilogy? Beyond Spider-Man Sony does not have any larger-than-life Marvel characters. Spider-Man is the only Marvel character that Sony can milk to this level.

Movie kicked ass, I liked it better than Rami's. Though I still like Rami's first two, the Amazing Spider-Man raised the bar on what a Spidey film should look like. The plot was a little weak but it was nothing that hurt the film's overall entertainment. Andrew did a fantastic job as did pretty much everyone casted, definitely would love to watch this again.

Coming next week: The Poll on "What Did You Think Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN? Poll" Were the answer choices good enough? Was the poll conducted fairly? Was it given enough publicity? Did you have enough time to cast your vote?

Find out next week in the POLL: "What Did You Think Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN? Poll"

Seriously, these poll articles are getting ridiculous.

I gave it 4 stars, but a generous 4. It was pretty good all-in-all and I'd recommend it, but there were just too many WTF moments and it was too similar in structure to the first Spider-Man. Great acting and action scenes though.

This movie was shit. They [frick]ed up the basic concept of what spider man is about. They never used the great power great responsibility. Uncle Ben's death had really little to no impact. In the comics he found the guy that murdered his Uncle Ben . This one he never finds the guy. retarded .The Lizard in the comics never was intelligent in lizard form ,but in here he's got his genius IQ ..really.. ?? then 4 people find out his Identity, and he used his powers against people without a mask.. I mean why even hide yourself. Now 4 different people know who spider man is .. well one died. There was no JJJ or Daily Bugle . And you never see Norman Osborne ..you just here he's dying.

This needs to be rebooted again.

It was better than Spider Man 1 & 3 but NOT better than Spiderman 2. The biggest problem I had with it was how they rushed a lot of the story too. I'd give it a 7/10. Garfield was totally better than Maguire.

It's OK- Garfield is better than Maguire and the effects are way better, but the heart just isn't there this time IMO. Too much unnecessary mucking with Ben and the backstory left this feeling more like a Nolanized "What If" story rather than our friendly neighborhood Spidey.

It was just alright. I'd watch the sequel but I would hope that it'd be better than this. Raimi's film was WAY better its not even close. I mean they even made a scene that was exactly like the original Spiderman just in different circumstances. Oh yeah and every Raimi villain > Lizard. I liked the idea of having him as the bad guy but the movie theater I was in would laugh every time he'd smile cause he looked way to silly, it was hard to take him seriously. Also I may be one of the few who liked Toby's Parker better. I mean excluding the 3rd movie of course. Garfield just annoyed me, he'd mumble his lines and just make it akward to watch. I understand that he's supposed to be portrayed as shy and socially akward but they over did it. That being said there was some real emotional scenes and it was beautiful visually. I am looking forward to the 2nd because this franchise has potential to get better. But this one is just a 6 out of 10 for me.

I didn't think you could mess up Spider-Man but they did.. Very meh, The movie itself was consistent but the story was terrible. Everyone says Raimi and Co. hammed up the first 3.. Well, you've never seen those movies then. Let's see in this new one Peter gets the girl in the first 10 minutes, and he's a geek chic so now he's hip. In Raimi's, Peter is such a nerd that the bus driver doesn't even like him, the stinky fat kid won't sit next to him and he doesn't get the girl until the end, and even when he does he tells her no, cause with great power comes great.... This new one didn't have any depth. It was more of a 2 hour MTV pilot. Dialogue wasn't there and Garfield was Edward Cullen. What a waste. Pay $14 for a two hour video game with no plots resolved...

The movie was nothing special to me. Andrew Garfield was not peter parker to me at all. story was good over all 3 out of 5 stars. better then spiderman 3. look forward to the next one.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 7/5/2012, 10:24 AM
@kooldeath, you apparently did not pay attention. You see a Daily Bugle newspaper on the ground which showcases Lizard. They did use the great power comes great responsibility, it was just worded differently because lets be honest, no one in today's world would ever have a reason to say that to a 16/17 year old kid. Peter revealed his identity only to a kid (who has no clue who he is) Gwen, Captain Stacey who died and the Lizard found his identity himself. The fight scene without his mask he kept his head down the entire time.

Also, the Lizard was never just a mindless monster, he was usually portrayed as still having Conner's high intelligence. Read some comics.

Uncle Ben's death did have an impact, and is a constant reminder throughout the film. Peter realizes that vengeance isn't what he should be out fighting for (that's why he stops looking for the killer), he should be fighting for the greater good, not his own personal vendetta.

Sanderman - 7/5/2012, 10:36 AM
@kooldeath soooooo you're saying your mad that it wasn't exactly the same as the original? you're just trying to look for ways to hate on this movie. (SPOILER) And you do see a daily bugle newspaper which has peter trying to win the reward by taking a pic of the lizard. you may not have seen every character that you wanted but its pretty obvious they'll be in the sequel with all the hints the movie provides.

If I saw someone who was a geek own Flash and smash a basketball backboard, then throw a FOOTBALL and bend a post, I would say, hmmm that's strange. Then if Spiderman showed up at the SAME high school I would think ... Hmmm, what a coincidence.

Average movie. I was expecting more. I agree with all those who said they flicked up Uncle Bens death and Spidermans primary motivation to help people.

CrowPirate1 - 7/5/2012, 10:48 AM
I thought the swinging and special effects were absolutely fantastic!

I think he needed more humor... I still think they haven't got his mile a minute rat tat tat tat hilarious joking machine mouth down, but then you really need to hire a strong comic writer to punch up the fight scenes with that.

and the Stan Lee cameo was the best he ever did. A ROAR of laughter erupted in the theater I was at!! Go Stan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Stumblin True I forgot I noticed upon my second viewing that when Cpt. Stacey said to Peter that spiderman seemed to have some petty vendetta against someone who resembles who we know is Uncle Ben's killer, Peter seemed to take that to heart.
