While at today’s 2011 Comic Con in San Diego, Andrew Garfield spoke to the press about finally taking over the role of Peter Parker aka Spider-man in the new reboot THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

On the role of Spider-Man:

“I like the idea of a skinny kid beating up bad guys,” says Garfield. “It’s a dream of mine and what a way to do it so you can give other skinny kids in the audience that achievement as well.”

On stepping into Tobey Maguire's shoes:
“I love Tobey Maguire’s interpretation of the character,” says Garfield. “It’s one of the things that rekindles and reminds me how much his character means to me. When I watch that first Spidey film, I lost my mind. I watched it back to back, twice in a row when I first saw it.” “[Tobey] sent a very, very, very nice email once it was announced,” says Garfield. “He gave me his blessing. It meant the world to me, because I respect him so much in general and also what he did with the role.”

Think Garfield has what it takes to portray a convincing Peter Parker / Spider-Man? Maguire seems to think so.

Maguire was a great Spidey, but we aren't getting a Spider-Man 4 so we should get geared up for The Amazing Spider-Man which I believe will be great and the trilogy will be the best installment of Spidey.

Oh and by the way has anybody watched the Japanese Spider-man series, I just watched the first episode and I have to say what the hell!

Tobey did a great job as Peter Parker. Despite that I know that Andrew Garfield will do just as well if not better. The Rami Spiderman series was great. Even though it had its ups and downs, the first two Spiderman's were excellent. Spiderman was the movie that sparked all these comic book movies we have today.

I think Garfield will do better than Tobey. I didn't think so at first, but I've changed my mind. He's also an actor of a higher caliber than Tobey.

I'm excited for Andrew Garfield, he's so passionate so you know this will be a great movie. I hope that in future movies that Brian Austin Green plays Venom, he'd be perfect

God I really hate those silver-web linings on the Tobey Spider-Man suit.

I wonder who's bright idea THAT was. But still Spidey 1 and 2 the start to what could have been an epic trilogy.

Garfield will own as Spider-Man

Not long ago everyone was "this movie is gonna suck" "I hate the new suit" "Toby IS Spiderman" Now it's a total 180. No wonder there's no pleasing the fans, guys flip like a damn coin.

@Bane and Ruddiger- Look guys, I liked both suits. Yeah the slightly silver webbing on the Tobey-suit kinda bugged me but it was- I admit a much better interpretation of the comic book version.

But I do like the new suit. I don't care that the comic book version is different. Spidey is one of the FEW Marvel characters I ever really followed and loved. Any changes from the comics and former films is welcomed by this fanboy. I have said the same thing for Superman countless times. I don't mind if the costumes change slightly. I just don't want something completely unrecognizable.

but furthermore @Ruddiger- I agree with you more man. I always hated the silver-webbings on the Tobey suit. And i really believe Garfield is going to own the role of Spidey.

what i have a REALLY BIG problem with Tobey is and has always been he CRIES too damn much. and they make him cry even MORE in the second and third movies, thus, making it harder to believe it's the same character when he dons the mask and throws some smart ass quips at his enemies.

and from the early trailer, Garfield's still not givin any better vibe. his Peter Parker seems way too BROODING. what is he, a young Bruce Wayne??

to me, in the comics, Peter's got his personal troubles, but he's not a gloomy cry-baby. he's just a little socially inadequate and "nerdy", so, every time, he's spider-man, he's just having fun like a star wars fan getting a real light saber.

love raimi's work on the first three and I believed in marc webb's directing style. And i'd be ecstatic TASM and The Avengers beat TDKR next year and Marvel will rule 2012.

I've never seen so many people so easily mislead by a picture, have you no memory? Tobey's suit and physique was perfect, absolutely spot on for Spiderman the way he had been drawn for decades..

..before a so called artists who could only draw in caricatures and had no grasp of actual anatomy came on board called Todd McFarlane. McFarlane's art was crap but he did one unique thing with the rendering of the webbing and captured a generation in those over the top silly creature feature stories of Spiderman vs venom. His Spiderman looked inhumanly warped and thin..

..and after that you got a whole bunch of idiot artists who tried their best to make Spidey's anatomy look just as freakishly anatomically incorrect as possible..

But the fact is that Raimi's picked Tobey because he fit the physique of the classic Spiderman and the suit was designed with those silver highlighted webbings so that the light would reflect off them and show up no matter the shot, be it long distance, night, light or up close.

The new suit won't have that effect and unless a shot is extremely up close, all you'll see is red and blue featureless material. Plus Andrew Garfield does not have Tobey's physique, he's taller, lanky and has a very long neck. He'll look more like the warped, skinny Spiderman the artists that followed after McFarlanes era drew.

As you can see the two actors have totally contrasting physiques, Tobey's is more classic Spiderman and Andrew is the skinny warped version of today. But the costume Tobey had is perfect, it's the true design of the classic Spiderman and intelligently designed to capture the webbing pattern no matter the shot type for maximum effect. Andrew's suit is not the classic design, it's more like an action figure variant or one of those ridiculous costumes they throw Peter Parker in for a few months before changing him back into the normal one. It has very thin black lines that practically disappear in nearly everything except a close up like the Spiderman costume from the 1970's movies and tv shows.

So depending on you choice of Spiderman comics be it classic or todays more freaky version, you're gonna prefer Andrews look or Tobey's. But the costume is a win win for Raimi and Tobey's version by a mile for me..

Yep I did a a backflip. I hated it(the costume) but after seeing the trailer and the photo's I'm happy it's coming out. I can see why webb changing the costume to differentiate from the raimi's spiderman. (c'mon look at the body types). I'd be whinging that garfield is not filling the original costume like maquire. Geez now I remember I did a backflip on the organic shoots it was an affront to spidey genius in creating it then I changed my tune.....heck was was I talking about again? well I'm going to see this when it comes out. whoo hoo
