Spider-Man: No Way Home made just shy of $2 billion when it was released in 2021, a feat that - outside of Avatar: The Way of Water - has been unheard of since the pandemic.
Tom Holland wanted to take a break from playing Peter Parker after the movie was released, though that's had mixed results as both Uncharted and The Crowded Room drew mixed to negative reviews. Now, he and his fans seem ready for the actor to suit up as Spidey again.
However, after starring in a critically acclaimed trilogy and hits like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, Holland is unwilling to do so unless he's happy with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 4 plans.
"The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films," Holland told Deadline. "I owe my life and career to Spider-Man. So the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more."
However, he'd go on to say that the more "complicated answer" is making sure the fourth instalment lives up to its predecessors.
"We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect," Holland explained. "The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing."
"This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me," he adds. "Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things."
That last part is very interesting, particularly after reports Sony Pictures is eager to bring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back for another Multiversal adventure.
Marvel Studios isn't keen on that and would reportedly rather save their return for the next Avengers movies. It appears their idea is for Spider-Man 4 to embrace the wall-crawler's roots as a street-level superhero who teams up with Daredevil to put an end to the Kingpin of Crime.
Alongside Holland, Zendaya is expected to reprise her role as MJ. Sydney Sweeny is rumoured to be playing Black Cat, while Scorpion and even the Spider-Slayers are all said to have been considered as Spider-Man 4's villains.
The movie doesn't have a release date, though we're expecting it to arrive in theaters next year. Holland's Peter is also expected to be a major player in the next Avengers movies, with it previously reported that the wall-crawler is going to be the lead character in Avengers 5.
