THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Rhys Ifans Reveals New Details About The Lizard

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Rhys Ifans has talked more about his role in The Amazing Spider-Man. Below is an excerpt from the Q&A, but be sure to pick up the issue when it goes on sale this Thursday for more.

Like many Spider-Man villains, The Lizard isn't necessarily evil, just misunderstood...

That's certainly the case here. Curt is a force for good throughout his life. He's a geneticist who wants to help people, like him, who are limbless. In his eagerness to advance that science, he makes a mistake and that's an occurrence we've seen throughout time, sometimes to our benefit, sometimes to our detriment.

Did you base him on any scientist in particular?

No, not in particular. I had vague memories of the Open University but I wouldn't say I looked like any of those guys. He is a broken man who wants to fix himself. The Lizard almost becomes a drug for him, an alter-ego like Jekyll and Hyde, if you like. He's strong and brave and agile in a way that he can't be in his own life.

Will we see Connors flit back and forth, or is this a gradual transformation?

I don't know if I can say. You'll see transformations of all kinds.

And you actually play The Lizard via mo-cap, don't you?

Yeah, the advancements in that are quite [frick]in' breathtaking. Each of your facial movements are repeatable, but then you add the face of a lizard. I was, disturbingly, able to recognise some of my facial tics. In terms of the physicality, I had a particular way I wanted The Lizard to move. I didn't have lots of CGI downtime.

How did you manage to suggest having a tail?

You just have to imagine yourself with a longer spine. Some days I'd be standing on set like one of those 'Golf Sale' people with the pole stuck down the back of my tracksuit, and on top would be the Lizard head. It was quite comical in comparison to the end result.

A couple of comments stand out as being particularly interesting here. Firstly, the fact that, "The Lizard almost becomes a drug for him," seems to indicate that Connors will indeed have some control over this persona. Secondly, despite the fact that every single piece of Lizard related merchandise has so far featured a design more akin to that of Steve Ditko's than the monstrous version made famous in the likes of Todd McFarlane's "Torment"; Ifans' claim that we'll, "see transformations of all kinds," is worth thinking about - you may just get that snout after all! Be sure to sound off with your thoughts below.

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy

So he IS playing him via mo-cap? Was actually wondering about that. Good to hear.

James Vanderbilt seems have written Curt Conner, perfectly.

Rhys Ifans appears to have gotten the character right, in the trailer.

However, the character's CGI rendering looks awful.

Now, I said the CGI looks bad, I'm not commenting on the design.

It'd be cool if we get to see him with the snout. And glad to hear that he played Lizard in mo-cap.

Aha. Several transformations. We'll likely get a 1st, 2nd, and Final Form lizard. Maybe Peter could be trying to stop Curt from achieving final form, seeing as though he loses all human genes and acts with only animal-like thoughts.

The Lizard design is fine. Not as creepy as I personally had hoped, but I'm not sure how else it could have been done and as far as the lab coat... definitely not. Seriously I think some of you need to be reminded of the differences between comic and film. It's the same reason the X-men films never used the classic costumes, and yet the black leather suits weren't much of an improvement. Still, I've made my point.

Could be the stages are just transitioning from human to what we saw in the trailer and action figures, and not further Lizard development.

Don't get your hopes up for nothing

I feel that the lizard in this film is reminisent( not sure if its spelled right) of how the wolf man was in the 1930s films. He retains more of his human qualities, face, teeth, etc

Mrs. Nolanite? Does this mean you're finally coming out of the closet? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Tell me though, was that the Robin suit from “Batman and Robin”? :-)

I think the lizard will be Awsome in this movie!!!! And we may get to see a snout but now I'm interested in the different transformations in the movie. And for the lizard not being evil jus misunderstood reminds me of what happened in super 8.

I wanted to see a snout too. However, If the Lizard Did have a snout, the vidcap would have to have been done differently as the placement of the eyes would be off. I think the reason they went snoutless is to try and keep as much of the actor in the shot as they could without going full cg.

@Bastard

God its so pathetic seeing people like you trying so hard to defend this design. It really is pathetic. So much that it hurts me.

The design is complete shit. Your arguments are laughable. The lizard changing serum doesn't give two shits if he's an intelligent scientist or not, its what it turns him into.

Ultimate Lizard actually looks cool and the lab coat is supposed to contrast with the savage nature.

I actually kind of wish this movie would fail so it could revert back to Marvel Studios, but there is no way the Spiderman name will ever not bring in money :(

IM GONNA END ALL CRITISISM ONCE AND FOR ALL.

FIRST OFF. THIS LIZARD IS A MIX OF ULTIMATE AND THE DITKO LIZARD. THE VERY FIRST LIZARD HAD NO SNOUT. AND ULTIMATE LIZARD HAS NO LAB COAT.
SECONDLY. WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, THE FINISHING RESULT LOOKS COOL AND THATS ALL THAT MATTTER. SOME WILL LIKE IT SOME WON'T BUT PEOPLE, STOP SAYING IT SUCKS OR IT LOOKS STUPID, SAY YOU DON'T LIKE IT BECAUSE I WANT TO SEE YOU TRY TO DESIGN SOMETHING BETTER.

i am very very very disappointed with the lizard - so far. of course he's jeckle and hyde. he's essentially spider-man's jeckle/hyde manifestation. the complexity of the villain is so unique. he is parker's friend, and mentor, and continues to be even after the initial transformation. and so while spidey has to kick his ass and bring him to justice, he's also trying not to do exactly that at the same time. the lizard is supposed to be one of the closest match ups for spidey because of his agility. most of spidey's villains are old, slow, rigid, but very smart, because they don't fully mutate, (i.e. doc oc, green goblin, sandman, scorpion, vulture, etc.) where as the lizard when in jeckle state, is not as bright, operates more on instincts and best of all is matches spider-man's agility. parker is a bright guy, but he invariably uses his powers and agility given his opposition. however with the lizard he has to be smarter than the lizard, because the lizard is powerful and his friend. i hope rhys got that. as for the cgi - that is not the lizard - that is a scaled down cloverfield alien with abomination tendencies. and in the short clips, he moves a lot like frankenstein would, all big and clumsy. i was hoping for a more spielberg approach, and actually have the lizard look more like a lizard, or the lizard or velociraptor like rather than emile blonsky's cousin. i mean raptors are scary as is, so that sets the tone already. it'd be like taking a raptor from jurassic park and making it spider-man's best friend. imagine the battles between a super-hero and a more raptor looking creature, as it's hardly been done. we've seen spidey fight men with powers. this lizard is just another, but with a tail. i think the story line for a change is going to bring something fresh to the fans, but the cgi looks like it pre-dates jurassic park 1. when someone injects themself with lizard formula, you'd expect either his human features or his lizard features to show. in this case, the dna has been ignored, and it has generated it's own nose, mouth and overall head shape. it's neither a human's or a lizard's. it's an incredibly detailed mask by looks of it. everything alse about the movie looks awesome, i must say. i like the web slingers - as it shows peter is a genius first, then an unwitting hero (unlike the sometimes retarded toby.) and i like the covert backdrop, it gives a nerd more incentive, when he can be inspired by hard core parents. mary jane was getting old, and i've always prefered blondes to red heads, and red heads only work in comic books because of the colour usage - blonde and brown aren't as visually stimulating. but having gwen in the movie is cool - i like it. mary jane should be brought in as a celebrity crush. an actress parker meets and is captivated by, but cannot get because an actress and a superhero's lives clash drastically - the relationship could even jepoardise his identity with media attention. just a thought. i'm amped for it's release. i can't wait to see it.

mrexcellent likes Foxpaw's comment.

haha. You know, I wasn't too keen on the CGI in Green Lantern (which was done by the same people who are doing this new Spider-man movie), but I thought their character work was decent. Kilowog looked alright, Tomar Re was okay, etc. Granted, it wasn't the best in the business, but these characters looked better in 2011 than the brief glimpses of the Lizard we've seen for 2012's Spider-man. So, I guess what I'm saying is, Sony Image Works will probably clean up the shots a little before the movie comes out, and it'll be more tolerable.

The shot at the end of the 2nd trailer, where the Lizard's tail is wrapped around Spider-man's neck is just bad though. I mean, I get that the Lizard is wet because he's been crawling around in the sewers, but Sony Image Works made crisper looking effects shots last year. That's all I'm saying.
