Check out the new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man if you have not seen it yet:
Well, the new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man has been released and to be quite honest, it was fantastic. Visually the film is looking stunning but that is not the only thing the trailer offered. We now know that the origin story is going to be different. in this article I will go through different theories as to what the origin changes could be:
Richard Parker Betrays Oscorp:
My theory based on the new origin goes something like this: I believe Richard will be working at Oscorp designing the OZ formula for Norman Osborne. Whilst working on it, he discovers that Norman has other intentions regarding the formula. Possibly to use it for soldiers in combat or something along those lines. After discovering this Richard decides to abandon the project and destroys all of his work in the progress. At least that is what Norman is led to believe.
Before Richard runs for it, he gives his son Peter a dose of the formula, so that it remains intact just hidden within Peter. 10 Years later Peter goes searching for his parents and is lead to Oscorp. He is bitten by one of the genetically modified spider's there which at first looks like it is going to kill him. What happens instead though is the formula combats the infection and merges to it creating a mutation with the formula. This is when he starts to develop his abilities.
As we have seen from multiple trailers, Richard's work bag is left behind, which Peter finds. I believe he will find part of the equation that is missing from Dr.Connor's formula. Peter being the science whizz has run tests on himself and discovers the mutation in his blood, that has a connection with the formula. He then decides to help Dr.Connors by finishing his equation, which then leads him to become The Lizard.
That is the end of my theory regarding the origin tale. Now I will go through another theory, which was posted in the comments by a user called BlackWarrior.
Peter Is Not Well As A Child:
I think it will be something to the affect that Peter had some genetic disease and his father and mother worked for osborn who they knew were bad but wanted to help their son. Don't think they expected it to give him spider powers... they probably used spider DNA to do it so that peter's origin basically parallels Dr. Conners. So peter finishes his fathers work to help Conners which makes him the Lizard.
I like the theory above actually more than my own. I think this could be a possibility. Peter is an unwell child and his Dad develops a formula to try and save him. Possibly save his life. This idea seems plausible to me and I wouldn't mind if it was part of Peter's origins. The formula keeps him alive and then when he is bitten by the spider at oscorp, it modifies it causing a mutation to his cells.
Again, BlackWarrior takes full credit for this theory because it is not mine. Great thinking !
In this final part of the article, I will go through why change if done correctly is not necessarily a bad thing.
There have been many people that have been unimpressed with the idea that the origin story has been changed. Many have compared this to Ang Lee's Hulk but let me make something clear. It wasn't the origin story the made The Hulk a bad film it was everything else. I mean mutated poodles ? Really ?
The thing is Raimi did not follow the exact origin either. The spider that bites Peter is genetically modified, not radioactive. This is an understandable change because if this were to occur in real life it would kill you. The thing is, it still would not mutate Peter. There would have to be something already dormant inside him for something like that to occur. I like the way this new take could go because it would bring more of the science-fiction elements into the film.
There are other people who are angry because that means Peter is no longer your average Joe, who coincidentally gains super powers. While I can understand their point, I think it is rather irrelevant and petty. The thing that makes this character in the first place, is his real life issues. That is what grounds him and makes the person behind the mask believable to the audience.
I personally am one for change. As long as it is handled well, I personally don't see an issue with it. If you want the original Spider-Man, go and read the comics, that's what they are there for. Just like different comic writers, directors will give their interpretation on the character. It makes things fresh and exciting because going down this route means things won't be predictable. Personally it excites me more and makes me very intrigued about this film. I think fresh and new is exciting but I can also appreciate that it is something not everyone is looking for. Maybe that's why the majority of my relationships only last a couple of months because I am always looking for something new !
I personally would have been pretty disappointed if they had just gone with the same old origin. It's the easy way out, in my opinion. It is the safe option. I give them thumbs up with this because they are actually trying something new as opposed to something we have already seen before. It certainly looks like this will indeed be "The Untold Story". Whether it will be a good untold story remains to be seen but for now I am optimistic and have faith in it.
This new trailer for me, has re-established my enthusiasm for this project and I wish Webb and Co. the very best. Hopefully it turns out to be great and we can all enjoy a new Spider-Man film together.
Anyway that was my point of view on the matter. What do you think ? Are they taking too many liberties with this new film or do you think this is the right direction to go ?
