Everybody's favorite topic returns! Now, I go through this site and I look at all the different editorials of people saying "[frick] THE REBOOT!!" and "Give it a chance!!" and so on and so forth. Well, I've decided to make my own editorial as an answer to all of you boys and girls. Let's start at the begining, shall we?
Spider-Man 3 is released to mixed reviews from critics, but box office success. When I saw it, I think the reason I enjoyed it so much was because I was with the BEST crowd for a moive. We cheered when Peter punched Mary Jane. As time went on and the hype died a bit, I realised "Wow, that movie actually sucked". It dissapointed me a little, since I was a huge fan of Spidey 1 and 2. I actually grew up on those movies and became a Spider-Man fan from those films. It was only after Spider-Man 2 that I started to look at the actual comics.
So, after the box office success of Spider-Man 3, a sequel was (as one critic put it) "as inevitable as death and taxes." Well, he was right and Spider-Man 4 was announced with the whole gang returning. Fans who were dissapointed by 3 thought that this was Raimi's time to redeem himself after he gave in to the studio heads. You see, Raimi didn't want Venom in the movie. As far as I'm concerned, he didn't even want a New Goblin. Raimi always invisioned Spider-Man 3 with Sandman and Vulture. But he had to put in New Goblin because the audience was expecting him and the studio wanted Venom. So, he did what anyone would do at that point: appeal to both parties. And that's when Spider-Man 3's ship hit the iceberg.
So, production begins on Spider-Man 4. Raimi is told that the audience wants Lizard, and he is intrigued, but doesn't want to give in again and decides to do what he wants. Thus, Vulture is added into the film. Then, along the line, things got pretty hectic with Felicia Hardy becoming the Vultress (WTF?!) and Spider-Man having a kid while Mary Jane just "went away". Now, ask yourself this, haters, did you really want that? The production becomes more and more troubled until the bomb drops and Raimi leaves the project along with Maquire. So, Sony decides to cancel the film, but at the same time decide to reboot the series. Yes, they could have waited, but it seems like they were thinking about this for a while, since the script for Spider-Man 5 is the one being used for the reboot.
So, with all the trouble about Spider-Man 4, Sony decides that the reboot will be a much "smaller" blockbuster film. So that means that the film will have a $70 million budget and have a cast of relative unknowns. In order to keep costs down, they hire Marc Webb, fresh off the success of (500) Days of Summer, to direct the film. Now, here is a little pet peeve of mine. Most of the haters of this film (LEEE in particular) hate the fact that Webb is a fan of the Ultimate universe...SO WHAT?!! Just because he is a fan of the Ulitmate universe doesn't mean the movie is gonna be in the Ultimate universe. And I think he only said that he was a fan in one interview. So now everyone assumes that he is Ultimate universe's biggest fan and the reboot will be shit. And I know what you are thinking: "It's gonna be based off Ultimate because Brian Michael Bendis made all those tweets about meetings with Sony". Now, I may be wrong, but weren't those found out to be false? I can't really remember but I think they were. And also, the script was written BEFORE Webb was hired. Just think about that.
Then, we were introduced to our new Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield. That is really when the reboot started to get more supporters. People saw that Sony was actually trying to get someone talented to replace Tobey. I mean, come on, you can't see Peter Parker in that picture?! But, alas, the haters continued with "He looks just like Robert Pattinson!!" and " No one can replace Tobey!!"
And now, we have rumors that Teresa Palmer will be playing Gwen Stacy. Yet there are still haters. Really, were you glad by the Gwen Stacy we saw in Spider-Man 3 (No offense towards Bryce Dallas Howard, it was not her fault)? What will it take for you guys to be happy?
BTW, thanks to EditNija for the above picture. Where was I? Oh, yes. Whether you like it or not, the reboot is happening. Why don't you try to remain positive instead of crying like a little baby. You guys keep saying that it will fail because it is not the original crew or because it will be more about his feelings or that it's going up against Star Trek 2 (yeah, I'm looking at you, claybo4131). First off, people will go to see it even it isn't the original crew (remember Incredible Hulk?). Second, the best Spider-Man stories are about his conflicts and all the pain he goes through. So, you would rather a big, dumb action movie with no heart? And, just because it's going up against Star Trek 2 doesn't really mean anything. Sony can change the release date if they really think it will be a problem.
Before I end this article, I need to address one of the biggest problems haters have with this movie:It's being shot in 3D. Many of the haters (LEEE, once again, in particular) think that the only CBM to benefit from 3D is Green Lantern. You mean to tell me that you wouldn't find swinging through New York in 3D at least remotely cool? And, another thing, you don't have to see it in 3D. Just putting that out there.
Well, that's all I have to say. I will admit that the reboot sucked if it does and I will apologize. But for now, try to think positive and don't be ready to hate it with every little bit of news that comes out with it.
Tell me what you think in the comments below. ;)
