With the rise of streaming, Blu-ray box sets don't quite hold the same importance as they once did. There will, however, be many fans hoping to pick up a DC Extended Universe collection, and one is heading to stores this October.
While it will include The Flash (suggesting the movie will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K by September/October), there are three missing DCEU titles and their absence has led to some disappointment online.
We're not counting Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom among them, as the former is expected to be part of the new DCU and the latter...well, this box set is either a tad premature or it too will eventually be folded into DC Studios' future plans.
In case you still haven't realised, yes, both 2016's Suicide Squad and 2021's sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad are nowhere to be found in this collection. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is also M.I.A.
We have no idea why they've been excluded, especially when The Suicide Squad is actually one of the DCEU's best-reviewed movies. It may be the fact it's R-Rated (as is Birds of Prey) but the presence of 2017's Justice League suggests this set is aimed at casual fans rather than DC die-hards.
There are those who believe this means the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad is on the way, but we wouldn't bank on it.
After The Flash bombed at the box office, this shared world is running on fumes and will end later this year. 2024 looks set to be a quiet year for DC Comics fans beyond Elseworlds projects Joker: Folie à Deux and The Penguin, but the DCU reboot is set to begin in earnest when 2025 rolls around.
Will you pick up this DCEU box set?
