THE SUICIDE SQUAD Had HBO Max's Second-Highest "Opening Weekend" Behind MORTAL KOMBAT

While Warner Bros. has yet to share detailed viewing figures, it's being reported that the movie had the second-highest debut on HBO Max behind only the slightly less critically acclaimed Mortal Kombat.

As per usual, Warner Bros. has yet to share specific streaming viewership numbers for The Suicide Squad (and is unlikely to do so based on past experience), but HBO Max boss Andy Forssell has shared some details with The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, the DC Comics adaptation was the second most-viewed opening of any movie that's gone day-and-date on the streamer.

Mortal Kombat reportedly remains #1, though it is surprising that drew a higher audience than The Suicide Squad. The video game franchise is hugely popular, but this movie boasted a popular director in Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn, a bigger name cast, and considerably better reviews with a 91% compared to Mortal Kombat's 55%.

"As the country faces new challenges due to the COVID variant, we’re happy to continue to offer fans the option of viewing movies in their homes," Forssell told the trade yesterday. "Many chose to do just that as Suicide Squad emerged as the second most viewed film over an opening weekend on HBO Max since we began day-and-date releases with theaters."

Going back to the box office, Jungle Cruise took its domestic total to $65.3 million this weekend, and earned another $15.1 million overseas to take its total to $121.8 million globally. As for Black Widow, that grossed $4 million in North America for a domestic cume of $174.4 million (its current worldwide total sits at a disappointingly low $359.8 million).

There's already speculation that Venom: Let There Be Carnage will slip into October, while some insiders seem convinced Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will head down the Premier Access route.

We'll keep you updated.

HBOMax is killing heir own movies at the box office. No way WB is making a profit or money.

@DoubleD - They really should have given theaters at least one week of exclusivity. I saw Suicide Squad in IMAX on Thursday night at 9pm (the earliest showing they had) and the movie premiered on HBO Max 4 hours before then. There is literally no incentive to see the movie in a theater, unless you HAVE to see it on a giant screen.

@santoanderson - One week wouldn't help people could wait a week. Same thing happened with Netflix's Army of the Dead.

Released one week before Netflix release and made less then million.

@DoubleD - their profit model is HBO Max. Like Netflix you accrue a lot of debt now by building a reputation of quality products and consumer driven content then see profit from it later. you have to train the consumer to never cancel their subscription and you will "eventually" see huge profits. HBO went from 9 million subscribers to nearly 70 million subs just within a year, so they are on track to catch up to Disney and Netflix in the following year despite costing way more. They just have to control their investments better. like to never put 185 million on a r-rated niche dc property like suicide squad, 165 mil on Space Jams 2, or 200+ mil on the upcoming dune because people don't really care about those.

@mastakilla39 -

It won't catch up to Disney plus.

I imagine HBO Max subscribers have grown much since April so... that doesn't sound great.

@WakandanQueen - my state in Australia went into lockdown a few days before the movie was supposed to release, so I looked into getting HBO Max with a vpn. You need to purchase a more expensive tier to access the movie, but I think a Disney+ style model would work better. But maybe have the movie cost $10 or $15 rather than $30.

Mortal Kombat sucked. Suicide Squad was great. However I’m not surprised that HBO MAX releases are messing with movie returns
