The DCU will be expanding in 2026 with Supergirl. The movie—written by Ana Nogueira—stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and is directed by Craig Gillespie, who helmed I,Tonya, starring Margot Robbie, and Cruella with Emma Stone. DC Studios' next big-screen offering is an adaptation of 2021's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, drawn by Bilquis Evely and written by Tom King. Aside from the change of having Jason Momoa's Lobo play a role in the story, the film is expected to be a fairly faithful take on its source material.

Adapting a character with as much history as Kara Zor-El can be tricky, particularly for someone not versed in the subject. Turns out director Craig Gillespie was not familiar with the source material prior to tackling the project. Thankfully, he had the right tools to helm the feature. The Supergirl trailer was recently released to the public online, but it was screened days prior at a press conference, where Gillespie and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn were in attendance.

There, the director revealed (via Screen Rant) he wasn't familiar with Supergirl's mythology, and as such, decided to read Ana Nogueira's Supergirl script prior to reading Woman of Tomorrow

"I very deliberately read Ana's script before I read the comic, because I wanted to see how that would hold up." The director explained he "didn't know anything about this, like, the Supergirl lore." As such, he felt that made him the ideal type of viewer for the movie, as he further explained: "[I] was kind of a perfect audience for it, because any questions that I did have, I could ask, but she did an amazing job of working that narrative."

The director further stated: "It was quite clear to me what was going on." Gillespie also made a point to commend screenwriter Ana Nogueira for the way she adapted the storyline, stating (via DC.com): "I know we keep mentioning the Tom King book, but she really took it to a different place as well. So, for everybody thumbing through that Tom King novel right now, it's different."

Supergirl is an important milestone for DC Studios and the superhero genre as a whole, given that it will be one of the first straight adaptations of a specific comic book run. Films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War adapted major storylines and concepts from their source material.

Batman v Superman, for example, took elements from the Death of Superman and The Dark Knight Returns. The third Captain America film adapted the Civil War storyline from the comics, and Infinity War brought to life Silver Surfer crash-landing on Earth to warn of Thanos' arrival, but replaced him with the Hulk. Despite these elements, none of the films were straight adaptations of their source material. Instead, they were inspired by it, taking its basic concepts and building new stories around them.

Craig Gillespie's Supergirl, on the other hand, from everything that's come out about it (it was originally titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, for starters), seems to be a very faithful adaptation of it source story. The comic is one of DC's most critically acclaimed works in recent years. Having a film taking that story as the basis for its plot is an exciting proposition, particularly given the creative team behind it, and its star, Milly Alcock.

Speaking to Variety, screenwriter Ana Nogueira explained that Supergirl initially didn't make sense to her: "She watched Krypton completely be destroyed. I was always like, 'I can't get my head around the version of the character that is so sunny.'" However, things changed when she read Woman of Tomorrow, which was a "rougher, and grittier, and edgier, and funnier" take on the character. The writer stated: "When I read it, I was like, 'There she is.'"

Supergirl will fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.

Maybe touch this one up a little. You're mixing genders and it's not clear that you're referring to the story arc from the comic book by Woman of Tomorrow given that was at one point the title of the movie.

@EskimoJ - not that marvel has not done that

Title definitely implies that a director read a script before directing a movie instead of deliberating over script before reviewing source material for the first time

Well, at least the director didn't throw darts at a stack of Supergirl comics and read the ones they hit. Reading the specific source material of a film can really be good....such a novel idea I know.

I'd expect some liberties taken but as long as the meat and potatoes are there, this could be another Wonder Woman breakout. I hope just so it'll shut up the idiots. Regardless the potential is high.

How come Marvel doesn't adapt a single [frick]ing thing into a movie

@bobevanz - I can see people complaining that it’s not exactly like it or it’s not new enough. There’s no winning really. They did do civil war which was highly regarded but there were also changes. Some of the more popular stories has so much backstory that I don’t think it would necessarily translate the way people think it would. As it is, people complain about the trailer for this movie. Too much like guardians of the galaxy even though it’s supposed to be close to the actual comic book.

@bobevanz - I always see it as a double edged sword scenario.

With animation it's easier as can more readily have all the required characters for a story thus little if any excuses with that unless specifically opting to go with a completely original other verse tale (and if they do that it better be good).

It can be tough with a cinematic universe to do a lot of the best comic stories as oft so many characters and back history involved and the costs with actors for a lot of major characters so you then run the problem if trying to do a very close to source adaption you run a high risk of falling short of expectations EVEN if the film is actually good. There is also the issue that if it is a direct adaption in the internet age anyone and everyone can google to find the entire plot including how it ends which can be considered a problem for the GA. I do however get that the major great stories in the comics course us nerds want them adapted as close to source as possible. That and if the franchise is set on Earth in the modern day it can cause issues for some of the earlier comic stories before the power of modern computers, evolution of scientific knowledge, internet and mobile phones etc so there ARE some tale you need to update to varying degrees in various ways.

Soon as you have a franchise ongoing if you don't start out fully source accurate it gets increasingly more difficult to do anything close to source and if original stories heavily based on are great I don't see it a big problem unless they go with one of the true epic tales in the title and even tho still good isn't anywhere near as epic such as Thor:Ragnarok.

So, yeh, certainly when giving a new addition to the franchise their first solo closer to source would be great and with the HUGE stuff like Secret Wars as close to as realistically able should be done but I get why they have mostly opted not to.

TLDR I'm fine either way IF the end product is great, as in true to source or original, but the BIGGEST more EPIC stories like Secret Wars I'd always prefer as close to source as realistic but even then enough differences to keep it feeling fresh and dramatic so as to counter the knowing who will or won't die and the ending stuff (even when they don't deviate it needs to feel like it could so don't loose the feeling of stakes if I know the story well).

Cool.

I’m sure some people will have issues with him saying that the movie is different from the Woman of Tomorrow comic which it does seem to be tonally & stylistically but keeping the same basic premise but that is bound to happen whenever a creative decides to adapt a property through their lens and sensibilities…

Every adaptation has this thing at the end saying “based on” which means they use the the source material as a basis/ foundation from which to tell their own story which Supergirl does aswell and it seems good imo.

Ultimately if it turns out well then people can have two versions of the story that they may appreciate , just one or neither but the option is there!!.

@ModHaterSLADE - well it looks like the script is more of the Tom King's original comic script before they wanted him to change it.
