Action Comics Writer Paul Cornell Comments On The Casting Of A British Superman!

Check out what the comic book writer had to say when quizzed about he feels seeing a British actor cast as the character who will soon return to the pages of Action Comics...

Below is an excerpt from the interview conducted by our friends over at Newsarama. To read the whole thing where the British comic book writer talks about about what's coming up in Action Comics, just click on the link below to head on over to the site.

Newsarama: What do you think of the casting of Superman by a British actor? I noticed on Twitter that you jokingly mentioned Helena Bonham Carter as a possibility for Lois Lane, to round out the cast with Brits.

Paul Cornell: I understand how people take it so seriously. I really do. I'm hypocritical about it. I would hate it if Doctor Who was played by an American. So I understand how people want Superman to be played by an American. However, I think they have a good actor. I think it's really interesting that the Doctor and Superman have the same place in the psyche of the different countries. The alien who is very much like that nationality.

Nobody seems to mind Batman being British.

But I just had fun on Twitter suggesting an all-British cast.

Superman: The Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill in the title role and will be directed by Zack Snyder. The movie is expected to be released sometime in the Winter of 2012!

He's right about that isn't he?
Two aliens, clearly not of this planet, yet we can't imagine either being any other 'nationality' than those we're accustomed to.

How odd we are.

I really loved the chosing of Henry Cavill, but I will never ever accept the maintaining of the ridiculous red underwear upon the Superman suit anymore.
So, be carefull mr. Zack Snyder! We just need a really imponent Superman, not an almost 80 years old red and blue joke... DC is not Marvel!

Cavill is a great choice and will make a great superman,
not a big deal at all.

RodSilva@ - I'm pretty sure you mean omnipotent or important - when I first read your comment I thought you'd typed 'impotent'!

@RodSVilaca - Whats wrong with the red pants, i think if they got rid of them it would look stupid. Dont get me wrong i've seem other costume design's and they look great, but it doesn't mean that they will transfer well on screen. The suit they used in Superman Returns was fine, what made it look slighty dated was the haircut. Bare with me on this, if they give him (Henry Cavill) a less slick haircut, by all means keep the quif, he probably would look more modern. But hey thats just me thinking out loud, i'm confident that whatever Zack does i'll be happy with.

Oh and i dont think it matters that he's British, i think he'll do a great job. Hell, we've got an American Sherlock Holmes and an Aussie Robin Hood but you dont see us making a fuss about it, just let it be.

@Rod: I agree, man. Its time to take off the tightie reddies. As much as the idea of a McG directed Superman flick frightened the ever living shit out of me, I have to admit they did come up with some fairly different super suit redesigns for "Flyby."

Superman is a classic. Modernize the lines and elements of the suit, but never, NEVER, touch the red panties! It is a costume from another planet.

Having a Brit play Superman implies this will be an Elseworld tale...instead of Red Son we have Pond Scum ;D

Lots of people from small, country, mid western farming towns have British accents. He really should sound like Larry the Cable Guy. IMO
As long as he has good teeth, I can't see Supes having a *B'dayum* smile.

I agree with theFACE - the suit from Superman Returns was fine; the traditional suit with a modern spin on it. But as Leee777 says, let's have the yellow "S" on the cape this time.
Besides, look how a lot of people reacted to the redesigned Spider-Man suit...

I am fine with him being British. I just think he needs to hit the gym and put some size on for the role like Chris Hemsworth did for Thor

The yellow shield on his cape is something that can be fudged as plenty of representations of Superman in recent years have removed this from his costume...

But as much as the red undies look camp..Synder listen up...DO NOT F**K UP THE COSTUME AND GO CHANGING LOADS!!!

Just modernise it abit!! You have been forwarned!!

There's no question that Clark Kent is American, but i'm not sure Superman can be pinned down to any one country.
Superman is a symbol & he belongs to Earth, not just America

Hey RodSVilaca,

Most Marvel characters don't have underwears outside their pants, so please learn before you talk.

LMAO @ these comments! They should make one of those viral-web-videos with Superman being intervied ala his interview with Cat Grant right before he fought Doomsday. During the interview, he can answer everyone's questions, like why he wears red briefs on the outside of his pants, as opposed to inside his pants, like everyone else does, at which point his answer would be "I'm an alien, you ignorant ass! On Krypton, this is normal garb. In fact, all of YOU look weird for NOT wearing your briefs on the outside". Ha! That would stick it to every douche who claims "this is how it should be".
