Did The Death and Return of Superman Shatter the Integrity of Comic Books?

Well, according to Max Landis, it did. He thinks that story arc was poorly conceived, and he wants to tell the world through a comedic short film that he wrote and directed.

The Death of Superman took place from October and November of 1992, spanning five titles and seven issues. The plot involved an unknown monster, later to be named Doomsday, that goes on a destructive rampage. It's up to Superman to stop Doomsday before he can destroy Metropolis. An Epic Battle ensues; when the dust settles, and the battle is over, Doomsday is dead. Superman is exhausted, and soon dies in Lois Lane's arms.

But was it as ill conceived as Max Landis would like to have you believe? Yes, yes it was. Did you know the storyline of Superman's Death was born from Lois and Clark the television show? What? Yeah, let me explain. See DC Comics wanted to have a big event for Superman that would bring customers back to the Superman titles, since they weren't selling well at the time. So, the plan was to have Lois Lane and Clark Kent in the comic books get married, but at that same time writers for the Lois and Clark television show were proposing the same idea. Well Warner Bros. caught wind of the DC Comic's plan and asked them to put the wedding idea on the back burner for the betterment of the TV show.

DC Comics agreed to push back the wedding, but that left a huge void in their plans, and they desperately needed a new idea, thus The Death of Superman was born. It started as just a joke between the various writers who were brainstorming, and soon grew into something more.

And here is the problem with the story arc, the writers knew they were gonna kill off Superman, but they had no clue how they were gonna bring him back. They took a three month hiatus, and when the Superman comics came back they featured four individuals who could possibly be Superman. Really? We all knew that none of the four would actually be Superman and it really just didn't make any sense.

You had a The Man of Steel: John Henry Irons, who to be fair never actually claimed to be Superman. He was taking over the mantle as a way of protecting what Supes stood for. Then you had The Man of Tomorrow: Cyborg Superman, The Metropolis Kid: Teenaged Cloned Superman, and The Last Son of Krypton: Superman with a Visor.

And how did the really Superman come back to life? At some point The Last Son of Krypton steals Superman's body and places it into this device called the Matrix in the fortress of solitude. Superman wakes up with shaggy hair and in a weakened state, but soon battles the Cyborg Superman who has been destroying Coast City. I know I'm leaving a ton of stuff out, but it's all really confusing and unnecessary. Like I said previously it wasn't a very well thought out idea.

As for Max Landis and his short film, that will be told in the vein of Drunk History by celebrities: Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Elden Henson, Morgan Krantz, Zach Cregger, Ron Howard, Simon Pegg, Matt Bennett, Sarah Shahi, and Barats and Bereta.

Official Synopsis - The Death and Return of Superman forever changed comics. Superman's tragic death was not just mourned by comic book readers, it echoed throughout the entire country. What is never mentioned, however, is just how poorly conceived The Death and Return of Superman saga was and how it shattered the integrity of the comic book industry. A follow up to his previous comic web videos Cooking with Comics: Knightfall and Vague Recollections of: Watchmen, writer/director Max Landis shows us through reenactment just how ridiculous The Death of Superman saga became and how it affected the world of comics.

The Death and Return of Superman is making its premiere at 12pm on November 27. Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater (611 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036) is hosting the event.

It shouldn't have done....but it did...

It was always played that he was going to return...but because of that it was clear it was just a major money making scheme to draw media attention...

That opened a door which clearly has not closed since...

It was kinda like "well if you can kill superman...anyone is fair game..."

I guess it depends on how you look at it, but I dont think so. I felt it was a great idea at the time, and even enjoy it now when i read it, but due to its success it was emulated too much. It triggered a wave of knock off stories and that shattered the integrity of comics.
But all success stories have immediate knock offs.
Star Wars changed movies and how sci-fi was perceived as a viable movie franchise. That didnt stop a million knockoffs from being born that made people sick of sci-fi movies for a time. Or Avatar had great 3D that studios decided to add but they did it cheaply and in post. So the crappy 3D is killing the potential of 3D.
Its the knock offs that kill anything, not the innovator.

The RETURN of Superman was actually much, much, much worse than the DEATH to be honest.

Totally disagree, those 3 trade paperbacks (Death, Funeral, Return) are the 3 ive read the most, that whole storyline read like a movie. It introduced 3 awesome characters, Steel, Superboy (Who's existence in the current 52 seems totally pointless and doesnt carry the same weight because he didnt evolve from that storyline), and The Cyborg (Who was very underused later on) The only loose end was what was doomsday and where did he come from, which was tied up in Hunter/Prey, but to say that the Death of Superman storyline ruined comics is a bold statement, especially since that was pretty much the golden age of comics in my childhood.

Hunter Prey was awesome, that was Dan Jurgens at his best. The only thing I'll say about the Death of Superman ruining comics is that afterwards everything kind of paled in comparison (at least in superman books). I wasnt really excited about Superman books after that until Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness came on to the books, and then after that Birthright.

Now...I cant even be bothered with the books, ive read the first few issues of Superman and Action in the new 52, and thats not the same character who I loved when I was growing up.

@TheTank, have to concur. The whole Death of Superman/Reign of Supermen story arc was a massive success -- to the point that characters like Conner Kent/Superboy, Steel, and the Cyborg Superman are regular characters in the DC Universe. That's not to mention the fact that Doomsday became one of Superman's arch nemeses.

Mandy needs to open her mouth a little wider ;)

I never read Superman comics, but I did ask the guy at my shop to put a copy in my box. The mother [frick]er forgot to so I ended up with a 3rd print off the rack.

I ended up reading the whole storyline in the Death of Superman TPB. It was pretty good.

Um, this article doesn't say anything about Max Landis's short or comment about the effects on the "integrity of comic books". Bait and switch. All this article said was it's bad because it was complicated. So what?

Stories that bring back characters from the dead usually are complicated aso I don't know why The Death of Superman is an exception. And, it wasn't all bad since it introduced characters that lasted. You know what would've been a better article? Comparing all the major revival stories.
Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 11/18/2011, 10:51 AM
The 'death' of superman was handled well enough (supes going out protecting the world from an unstopable threat is in-line with his character), they never should have done it if they intended to bring him back. Doing so robs the character and the comic of its importance. If they brought him back after along while in a well thought up way, okay but they didnt.

Now the doors have been opened for this kind of crap and its only been getting worse. The death and return of Batman and Cap are just plain aweful, and the writers didnt even wait a freakin year to do it!

How about all the new readers that got into comics because of that saga, i.e. me? That alone gave it a reason for being.

Didn't they do the death and resurrection of Jean Grey before Supermans? (Aaaaaaand she's dead again).

That aside, that slippery slope is now littered with risen heroes clogging the graveyards of our imaginary worlds. And the number keeps growing, Cap, and Bucky and Thor are being earth birthed.

I guess, when you look at it, it really is a weak story line that has lost its punch. I hope they just stop using it soon.

Not sure what effect it had, but the Death of Superman was a pretty crappy story. I didn't feel any desire to buy the rest of the trilogy because the first part was so awful. If it is responsible for the willy nilly killing of characters that goes on these days, then I hate it even more.

the only reason i liked the death of superman was because we got to see superman die, i was never a big superman fan. i don't mind him he just irritates me because he has all this power and yet is kind of a wimp about using it, even when there are people who are about to destroy the planet. (thats why goku would whip superman lol).batman with NO power doesn't care, he'll do what needs to be done. and i also liked booster gold and guy gardner in the death of superman even tho they got the crap kicked out of them. not to mention DOOMSDAY who is badass!

Personally like didn't like it.
Superman dies.
Then with almost no time in between: there are 4 new Supermen
Suprise! None of them are him.
Most of the arc is prectible and kinda seems like a ploy to start new ongoings.
Then he comes back...wow
That said it's still one of the most important superman stories.

Im my Opinion Batman: Knightfall is better thought out and deeper.
Grant Morrison's Death of Batman and his return however is infinitely better. More fun and better planned.

This Arc was one of the greatest of all times and it was really my introduction to Superman and i bough every single comic, before then i had just collected dc cards and bough marvel and image comics. But the death and return of Superman had me hooked. Superboy and The Eradictor are just awesomely epic, and Cyborg Superman was stone cold, i really wasnt a big fan of Steel, but it was a clusterf**k to read and wonder exactly who was Superman. The superboy from that Era i fell in love with,he was awesome with a attitude. But The Eradictor was like If Superman had Stepped into Image comics and became a character. It was a epic time in comics Batmans back was broken and superman was dead.KnightFall was also the ish, love and miss that version of Bat's.But yeah most memorable Arc Ever it brings back fond memories
