SMALLVILLE's John Schneider Wasn't A Big Fan Of MAN OF STEEL's Jonathan Kent

Man of Steel is arguably one of the most divisive CBMs ever. While some fans were more than satisfied, some were disappointed, including Smallville's John Schneider. It turns out he wasn't too big on how Jonathan Kent was portrayed.. Come see what he had to say!

Not only did 2013's Man Of Steel finish with a total box office gross of over $668 million, it also managed to successfully launch the DC Cinematic Universe, which will pick up again in 2016 with Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The cast features Henry Cavill (Immortals) and five-time Academy Award nominee  Amy Adams (Enchantedreturning as Superman and Lois Lane respectively, Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck (Daredevil) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast Five) as Wonder Woman, and Jason Momoa (Game Of Thrones) as Aquaman, amongst others.

While it was financially successful, Man Of Steel managed to be one of the more controversial CBMs in recent memory. While many fans loved and enjoyed it, an equal number of fans were left wanting and weren't as happy with some of the liberties director Zack Snyder took in the film and it looks like we can add Smallville's John Schneider to that long list of individuals who weren't happy with something, specifically the portrayal of Jonathan Kent.

As many of you know, Schneider portrayed Kal-El's adoptive father Jonathan Kent for five seasons on the hit CW show Smallville before his character passed away. After the end of his time as a series regular, he returned for three guest spots in the tenth and final season.

While, Schneider doesn't criticize Kevin Costner's performance, he does raise a valid issue with the characterization of Jonathan Kent and his parenting ability. Check out what he had to say below, skip ahead to about the 5:15 mark to hear his thoughts or read the transcript that follows:

“I love Kevin, I love what Kevin does. I didn’t care for the fact that they wanted, there was one scene in there, where Jonathan was advising Clark to do something that was kind of self-serving, it was tell a lie, I can’t remember exactly what it was. That bothered me because I think Jonathan Kent is the best dad perhaps ever depicted on television. And I don’t mean my work, I mean just the man that I was fortunate enough to play. He was a great father, and I don’t think that the one they crafted in Man of Steel was a great father. I think he had some flaws that don’t belong in a comic book. I really had wished that had been me, I mean he had my clothes, he was in front of my silo, so why not?” *chuckles*

The scene Schneider is alluding to seems to be the one where Jonathan is telling Clark that, maybe, he shouldn't have saved the school bus full of his classmates because it could have exposed his abilities to the world.

So, what do you guys think? Do you agree with Schneider? Was the characterization of Jonathan Kent a little off in Man Of Steel? Or do you disagree? Did you like how Jonathan Kent was portrayed? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Dear god that was cringey to read.
Reminds me of Hasselhoff saying that Sam Jackson's Fury should have been him and that he is the one true Nick Fury.

Pa Kent was one of the weakest aspects of a fairly weak movie.

Next to Amazing Spider-Man 2, Man of Steel was the worst superhero film I've ever seen, and I've seen Blade Trinity.

Yeah, didn't like the fact that Jonathan told Clark that he maybe should ave let the kids on the bus die. Wasn't crazy about the tornado thing either. I really enjoyed the movie though, just felt like they dropped the ball with Paw Kent. Shame, cause they had a great actor playing him.

MoS's Pa Kent basically advised Clark to let innocent people die to protect himself. And then he let himself get killed just to drive the point home, in one heck of a traumatic way.

I'll take a great Superman movie with a flawed Pa Kent over a POS Pa Kent TV show with no Superman.

Stop asking Smallvile actors about Superman when they clearly have NO F'N IDEA.

STOP BRINGING UP SMALLVILE PERIOD.

I thought man of steel was great, all Zach did was watch and implement the first couple of seasons of Justice League. The Zod fight where everyone complained about buildings dropping was an exact copy of the Darkseid battle. Plus, I felt much better leaving the theater after that than I did leaving Green Lantern, Iron man 2 & 3, Amazing spider man 2, etc.

I did'nt agree with what he told Clark concerning the school bus accident or sacrifice of himself during the tornado. Though it was a gut wrenching scene, if you have the power to save lives you do it. The world was'nt ready to know about Clark huh? Bullcrap! A bus load of kids should've died so a secret can be kept? That was a poor teaching moment in my book!

I didn't for one second take it as him telling Clark he should have let the kids die. I took as him being worried about his son's secret coming out and he didn't know what Clark should have done. He was emotional and worried and when Clark says "what was I supposed to do just let them die?" the "maybe" wasn't Pa Kent saying "yeh let them die" it was him not knowing the answer to how to keep that side of himself secret.

He just wasn't an all knowing Pa Kent who knows how to make everything right. He even says before the tornado scene that him and Ma Kent have "been doing the best we can and we've been making it up as we go along". "Maybe" wasn't "Yes" "maybe" was just "I don't know" in my opinion. That's what I saw it as anyway

I agree that the Pa Kent scenes regarding the bus and the tornado we're aggravating and unnecessary. Still a good movie, a good start. Not the best ever as Jollem says though.

You lot do realize Snyder is a FAN of Smallvile right?

You lot do realize that the whole "Pa Kent keeping secrets" thing was born out of [redacted]'s stubborn refusal to wear the Superman suit prompting that stupid destiny BS right?

You lot do realize that any flaw in MOS can be traced RIGHT BACK TO SMALLVILE right?

You lot do realize that right?

Right?

@UltimaRex every flaw but the stupid flashbacks. That was the one thing that annoyed me the most about Man of Steel; the fact that Snyder felt the need to stick a flashback in the middle of every third scene. Because of the filters he was using it became impossible to tell if a scene was going to be a flashback or if they were just cutting to smallville. I would have probably enjoyed the movie a lot more if they would have just put all of the origin and childhood stuff at the beginning.

As a father I completely understand why Costner would have said those things. Because his JK was more of a real person than Bo Kent.

Johnathan Kent was, to put it nicely, a contradicting asshole. Besides his final scene, he had the worst parts in the entire movie.
