SPONTANEOUS Helmer Brian Duffield Interested In MAN OF STEEL Sequel Inspired By ALL-STAR SUPERMAN - EXCLUSIVE

Spontaneous is now available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Microsoft Movies & TV, Sony PlayStation Video, FandangoNOW, and more. To celebrate the release of the movie which stars Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, and Hayley Law, we recently caught up with writer and director Brian Duffield to discuss the bloody romance story (check out our 5* review here).

We'll bring you our full interview later today, but in the meantime, we thought you'd like to check out what Brian had to say about potentially taking the helm of a Superman movie for Warner Bros.

"I would love to do a Superman movie [Laughs] actually because I feel like everyone always gives him the short end of the stick saying he's not an interesting character," the filmmaker tells us. "I feel like I get the tone of how to do that, and 'All-Star Superman' could be used as a jumping off point to have a really great standalone Superman movie."

"Now is the time where a really human and hopeful Superman living in this kind of world that we're in right now could be uplifting and funny and cool in a way. My buddy Mattson [Tomlin] wrote the new Batman movie which is obviously on the darker, and awesome, looking side of things, but I feel with Superman, you could do something not too dissimilar in tone to Spontaneous with it where it's just a lot of fun, but you're dealing with bigger issues."

"I think that's the thing I've been missing in some of those movies. I just wish they were fun and felt awesome after leaving the theater," Duffield continues. "Doing a Superman movie in that [Sam] Raimi Spider-Man 2 energy would be incredible."

"I've never really put my hat in the ring for it and no one's called about it either, but I wish there was a really dope Superman movie coming down the pipe. I loved good chunks of Man of Steel and I think Henry Cavill is hard to come up with a better Superman than him right now too."

Based on these comments, we would love to see what Duffield would do with Superman on the big screen as it sounds like he has a vision for the franchise that fans would definitely get on board with. Spontaneous is actually a movie that does a great job of balancing vastly different tones, so the director is someone who has the potential to bring an awful lot to the DC Extended Universe.

Watch an extended look at Spontaneous below, and check it out on Digital platforms from today!

Well, I googled Brian and movies like Underwater don't seem like a Man of Steel type.

On the other hand - Russo's also weren't world famous before Winter Soldier.

I like his enthusiasm.

@DARKSIDEIS - I rather see someone's enthusiasm about a project than another the studio wants this project (yes, I'm talking about Uncharted)

@DARKSIDEIS - I loved All-Star Superman, but DC needs to learn to STOP LEANING ON TERMINATION TALES!!!!! They Started with a Dark Knight Returns Batman, Death of Superman and Flashpoint Flash in the first 5 films. No, NO, NOOOO! These are spectacular stories, but they lose so much value by being thrown into the origin pile. Focus on the appetizers. Make them a delicious start. Then entree. Finally Dessert. They belittle their characters by making it seem like they aren't interesting enough to build. Penny, penny.

@tripttwe - Exactly!

I don't know many of the older stories, but starting Flash with a Flashpoint movie?? Totally BS idea. Flashpoint is supposed to be a Endgame-level movie!

I liked BvS a lot, but the Death of Superman was not handled well. Imo Doomsday and Martha are the things that are lowering it down.

Dc is just trying to be on the same level as MCU is on right now, but they don't get that it doesn't work that way.

@DARKSIDEIS - That's exactly what I'm saying. They are cooking the food without pre-heating the oven. Forgive me for the food puns. I think I should have an early lunch.

@DARKSIDEIS - Get this guy a copy of Superman Man Of Tomorrow and American Alien, then hire his ass. I think its too soon for All Star. That should be like one of the last movies in DCEU. It needs some build up. But love this guys energy. [frick]ing get in there and pitch it brother. This was music to my ears.

As much as I want to see Cavill return, I doubt it'll happen. Maybe Duffield can make a Superman story set in the same universe as he buddy writes in. Just please, no Man of Steel 2 please

Maybe they could make a time-jump, where there would be an older, more-skilled Superman, who has a son (Jon Kent).

Whereas in the third movie, Jon would die and we would watch Kal lose and regain his hope (probably not Injustice style, that would be too dark).

Well, if The Flash producer's words are to be believed, maybe the Cavill Superman's world (a.k.a. the DCEU) will be reset & some things MIGHT be jettisoned (killing Zod, Doomsday, Justice League). Either way, I mostly agree with this guy except I don't want All-Star Superman. I don't care to see his dying days. I want to live with a cinematic Superman for a good amount of time like how we had Cap & Iron Man in the MCU. I want to see him battle Parasite, Metallo, Brainiac, Toyman, Prankster, Darkseid, etc. in complete adventures. We've constantly seen Superman's death (& return) in media in Superman: Doomsday, All-Star Superman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice & The Death & Return of Superman (or whatever that last one was called). Why do they mostly only tell his beginnings or his endings?

I never understood the Superman's not that interesting argument. His powers are visually cool. You just have to make sure you give him villains and conflicts, that make him struggle a little bit, BESIDES Kryptonite! Natural global disasters like massive volcanoes, earthquakes, astroids, etc. And personality-wise, just make him a really likable character, without being an @$$-hole. Chris Evans' Captain America, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, are two easy examples.

I think Superman's costume is the biggest problem haters have with the character. Batman's dark gothic costume, is a big part of his popularity and appeal. With Supes, I wouldn't mind the next filmmaker coming up with a unique design. Something that looks really cool and different, but still honors the traditional look. The Justice Lord costume is probably my favorite.

I had an idea for a superman story which would be from the point of view of Lois Lane. She's gonna be a journalist known for finding the ugly truth behind popular public figures like politicians and celebrities. When Superman first shows up and rescues people he then goes to Lois the following night. He asks Lois to interview him because he notices public opinion seems uncertain about him and he wants to let people know he means no harm. This goes as far as stating where he came from, the town he grew up with, his human identity, and his known limitations (lead) to try and prove he's a genuinely good guy. Lois then spends most of the movie finding dirt to prove superman can't be trusted only to be shown he's the genuinely great guy who just wants to help.

We also have a plot involving the creation of metallo that turns out in the end to be a scheme by Lex Luthor, who's trying to put Superman into a public stalemate to force him to show his "true colors" by killing him. Superman ends the scene by saying he isn't angry at Lex, and all he feels for the villain is pity.

@Origame - I like this alot. I think it works really well as a graphic novel or episode of show or even an animated movie. I need to know more the details of the plot, but I like this.

I did a youtube vid of my screenplay of Superman idea. Check it out.

@aresww3 - Thanks. I'm at work so I can't watch it now but will later.

Anyway, I was thinking it as part of a trilogy, with the second part involving Lex becoming president and Zod coming to Earth. This conflict isn't too much, but it gives Luthor enough support to apply the Metallo tech to the army, giving a means to kill Superman. Meanwhile Lois manages to uncover a lot of the shady history of Lex's rise to power, and when impeachment is shown to be a very likely possibility, Lex dawns a mech suit to fight Superman. Superman wins, but becomes very weak as a result. A new president is sworn in, Lex is gathering some loyal followers from the underground to work for him, and it's revealed Zod's arrival called on the forces of Brainiac.

The third movie is Brainiac's invasion. Before the invasion, Superman's reputation is still pretty low as he still looks like part of an evil alien race. When some Brainiac pods crash down, Superman has to face against both them and the army. Luthor, still considered a traitor, is sending out messages saying he's gonna create a weapon to stop brainiac. When Brainiac does arrive, Luthor is quickly overwhelmed. As Luthor lies on the ground about to die, Superman comes in, getting knocked out trying to save him. Lex can't rationalize this other than finally accepting that Superman just wants to help. He tells Lois to watch after him, then goes on to sacrifice himself for Superman. Lois takes Superman to try and let him rest but as the aliens attack, ordinary citizens actually begin to help. Using guns, clubs, brooms, whatever they have to help. Some die, some get the upperhand thanks to numbers, but they do hold off the troops so Superman can get back up. After seeing all these people now willing to sacrifice themselves for him, we see him shed a tear before flying straight to the sun. He comes back in a split second more powerful than ever and manages to destroy all the forces of Brainiac. And the story ends with Lois publishing a paper on the Man of Tomorrow and turning it in before going on her honeymoon with Clark Kent.

@aresww3 - Zod is mostly there to show how Superman can be a menace. But yeah, I suppose a less important kryptonian can go there instead
