SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Details His Issue With "Cameo Porn" In Superhero Movies

Superman: Legacy director James Gunn has revealed why he takes issue with "cameo porn" in superhero movies and names the character he's currently most excited for fans to see in the upcoming DCU reboot...

As the cast of Superman: Legacy continues to expand, there's been a lot of chatter online about the movie being too "crowded." The reboot is going to introduce the DCU's new Man of Tomorrow but the hero will find himself surrounded by characters like Green Lantern, Metamorpho, and potentially even Supergirl.

That doesn't sound too different from a lot of superhero movies, but some feel filmmaker James Gunn should focus solely on Superman. However, the reboot is also our introduction to DC Studios' DCU and, if anyone knows how to handle large ensembles, it's the writer and director behind The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Gunn recently answered some questions on Threads, clarifying his stance on the size of Superman: Legacy's cast. "The whole point was it’s NOT a large film - I mean, not in terms of cast," he explained. "It’s normal for single protagonist films to have other characters - much more unusual for them not to."

The filmmaker went on to reveal why he takes issue with some superhero movies leaning too heavily on what he'd describe as "cameo porn."

"I call that 'Cameo Porn' and it has been one of the worst elements of recent superhero films," he said of what a fan described as the genre's tendency to '[have a] character appear on screen for 10 seconds to mark a checkbox.' Gunn added, "If a character is in film, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise."

"I don’t mind actual cameos - if it’s a glimpse or a moment, an Easter egg," he continued. "What bothers me is when they mangle an elegant story by shoehorning characters in - they aren’t there because the story calls for it, but for some other reason."

"[It's] fine if it doesn’t disrupt the story. It’s the plot contrivances that develop from a cameo, not the cameo itself."

Gunn isn't wrong and Marvel Studios' recent movies have suffered badly from "cameo porn." That's evident from the blink-and-you'd-miss-them cameos from major characters like Hercules, Eros, and, heck, even all those Kang Variants in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania! On the DC side, it was a problem for The Flash as well.

Elsewhere in this brief Q&A, Gunn said Mr. Terrific is the character he's most excited for fans to see in Superman: Legacy and revealed that Watchmen is his favourite DC comic book.

@JobinJ - My brain went to that time Ron Jeremy made a cameo in Ghostbusters. But I guess that's more of a porn cameo.

@Oberlin4Prez - That's a Josh catchphrase used in almost every article of his. Even if the chatter is only his own lol

@Slotherin - 9 out of 10 of his articles start with some variation of "There's a lot of excitement around..."

This has always been a dumb complaint. Like, have we never heard of supporting characters? Why is it effecting anything when some of them have superpowers?

And if you're saying it makes superman less special, well guess what? The fact it's in a superhero universe means that's inevitable. But the point is superman can stand apart from other heroes.

@Origame - "Why is it effecting anything when some of them have superpowers?"

I still can't quite get my head around why people don't get this.

One observation: It's only hardcore geeks that ask this question. The GA just naturally get it. They're more discerning than us. I guess we can't see the woods for the trees sometimes.

I'm worried that James Gunn doesn't get this either. Zack Snyder certainly didn't.

@Origame - I get what he's saying. The Black Knight and Hercules come to mind. Why have them in a movie if there is no clear path forward for the character that the studio is developing?

@plasticman - why have any stinger though? Stark in Incredible Hulk, etc.
We don't get the payoff til later

I could be alone in this but I don't generally count post credits as cameos.

Hercules was presumably a stinger, as were Kang variants and Eros.

But I get how Josh operates now.

@Slotherin - Agreed. I'm thinking more iron heart in BP2
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 12/13/2023, 9:24 AM
@Izaizaiza - Not really a ‘cameo’ though. She was a character included in most of the film and played a large part in the story. A cameo is like Howard the Duck in Guardians
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 12/13/2023, 9:24 AM
@Slotherin - Post credits are fair game for anything, as far as I'm concerned. I usually don't consider them to be a part of the movie itself. It's extra. And if they function correctly, they can even be skipped without missing any critical story elements.

Apophis71 - 12/13/2023, 9:30 AM
@Slotherin - I agree, the issue if there is one is about cameos in the film itself or else an end credit of Tony Stark in a Hulk film or end credit of Fury with Captain Anerica's film would be on the problematic list...

...mostly those are teasers for the future or a fun callback to something in the film as an Easter egg gift for those who stick around for the end credits.

As Gunn says the issue is when they derail the main story to force in cameos for no good reason that detract from the plot and flow of the actual film itself.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 12/13/2023, 9:34 AM
@CerealKiller1 - Fair point, although Iron heart was definitely shoehorned in.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 12/13/2023, 9:43 AM
@Izaizaiza - I don’t disagree with you there to be fair
Slotherin
Slotherin - 12/13/2023, 10:23 AM
@Izaizaiza - that's not a cameo. That's a supporting character. She had a bit of an arc and her actions kicked off the story.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 12/13/2023, 10:24 AM
@Apophis71 - I get what Gunn was saying and agree with it. I was critiquing Wilding bringing up MCU films that were unrelated to the issue.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 12/13/2023, 10:27 AM
@Slotherin - Yeah, I don't disagree. I misspoke... But she sure was shoehorned in

@Slotherin - yah. post credits are the hey this is next. [frick] with that logic then Thanos was cameo porn right. that's stupid to include post credits as a lot of them are extremely crucial to ongoing stories.

I loved it!
It was bonkers and a lot of fun!
The Valkyrie bit does seem somewhat shoehorned while it also makes sense considering how New Asgard has been a home for refugees since its creation, Carol and Valkyrie are both shown to have spent time on Earth during the Blip and they both subsequently fought in the attack on the Avengers Compound.
