When asked whether or not there were reservations on his part on playing the role of Superman, reeve admitted that he was "skeptical" about the idea, wondering if the project could actualy be real. Reading the script, however, convinced him that it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

When asked about his approach to the character of Superman, he admitted, "I wasn’t quite sure what I would do as Superman, so I decided that I would simply let the costume do most of the work. The technology was developed to make me look incredible, but that made it easier in that I could underplay the part. So I thought, the thing to do is not do too much. Don’t pose or overact. Just be Superman. [With Clark Kent,], I knew he was bumbling, well meaning but insecure. So I stole some of him from Cary Grant and also tried to work on a stutter for a little bit. I also adopted a different body position to create some difference between the two characters."

That´s clever, if you have godlike powers, you don´t need to try hard to be intimidating, just be midly imposing and confident.

I´m tired of the "Terminator" glowing red eye they been using since forever in the comics to make him look menacing, it´s too overdone.

Christopher Reeve is the only actor to really sell the idea of Clark Kent and Superman as two separate characters. He was brilliant in both roles. Much missed, a personal hero and a never ending source of inspiration!

Ah, i saw the 1994 movie "Speechless" the other day, the one with Micheal Keaton and Christopher Reeve together. It was...curious and weird!!!

The BEST "Superman" ever, even after the movies! Speaking of posture, my fav scene in the second movie is when Lois discovers Clark is Superman in their hotel room. You see Reeve slowly change his posture and straighten up and take the glasses off. Very simple yet very effective on selling the part!

Reeve had that amazing type of persona that made him Superman even when he wasn't playing the part. You truly felt that Superman was among us on Earth. I'm not saying that he was god-like, and I don't know if it was him acting, but the man came across worthy of donning the red cape at all times in the public eye.

I cannot argue that Reeve's Superman was well done, underplayed and near perfect. I have issues with Clark Kent. Clark, after all, is the real person and Superman, the persona. The bumbling, stuttering Clark Kent becomes almost a cartoon. I liked George Reeve's portrayal of Kent as the crusading reporter. He may have feet of clay, but he was more believable.

I'm a bumbling, stuttering person and I'm real. Well, only bumbling, stuttering when not saving the world.

I think that was what was effective about his Superman. George Reeves was great, but how could anyone not tell that he was really Superman. Reeves knew that they looked alike so to seperate any possible thought that they were one and the same they had to have polar opposite characteristics. Like when you watch the Supes animated show from the 90's; he's always Superman, even as Kent. Christopher Reeves was revolutionary and awe-inspiring as Superman.

Awesome...but what is this about?

"The technology was developed to make me look incredible"

Did they make him bigger than he actually was? Cause I thought it was all him?

I watched Returns again yesterday and I got to admit, Routh was pretty damn awesome. Especially considering he was basically playing Reeve, but I noticed the real problem- EVERY OTHER CAST MEMBER!

Like if Routh is playing Reeve, Bosworth had to play more like Kidder, Spacey more like Hackman and so on...I think Routh was the only one to get that memo lol.

@JaySin420 right on brother. My opinion is MOS is making a huge mistake not bring Routh Back. Routh is spot on as Reeves was.

@paulyd3- Dude get over it, Routh won't return, EVER. He isn't a good actor either. And if you're so hell-bent to have Routh return, then you might as well skip the reboot then because they actually went with a good actor this time for Superman.

@JaySin420- Routh DID imitate Reeve...how on earth does that deserve any sort of applause?

At least Bosworth ACTED in the film same with Spacey, they actually had a sufficient amount of dialogue. When I watch a CBM I watch for the way the actors present themselves through their scripts. Routh barely said a word in the entirety of the film...that does NOT constitute any sort of acting capability.

Again I judge the actors based on their looks and DIALOGUE. Most of the people here on CBM I've noticed only judge by looks alone. Because like I said...Routh didn't really do much in SR. He got completely upstaged in every single scene of SR. Hell...even JIMMY OLSEN upstaged him a few times...that is just sad.

@All Routh is a poor excuse for an actor and together with Singer ruined an amazing opportunity to revitalize the franchise. Snyder better pull out all the tricks and Nolan better guide him properly as there are millions of Superman fans out there waiting to watch a good Superman movie 5 times in one week :)

Routh would have been better if he had brought his own style to SR. Instead he tried to mirror Chris Reeve. Just blame Bryan Singer. I can't even bring myself to watch Super-man returns, it was so bad. Not Routh's fault. The script was horrible. No originality whatsoever. Almost 20+ years we waited for Superman to return to the big screen, and what do we get? A lame remake of the 1970's film. Stupid.
