SUPERMAN: Warner Bros. Expected To Recast The Man Of Steel With A Black Actor In The Role

Earlier today, we found out that WB was developing a Superman reboot with Ta-Nehisi Coates set to pen the script, & it looks like we now have confirmation that a Black actor will play the new Man of Steel.

The news that Warner Bros. is working on a new Superman movie broke earlier today, and we now have a pretty major update to share.

Despite a suggestion that Henry Cavill might return to the role, several trade reporters have now confirmed that this reboot will indeed feature someone else in the cape, and the studio is said to be searching for a Black actor to play the new Man of Steel.

According to THR, the project is being set up as a "Black Superman story," which is an idea WB has been kicking around for quite a while. Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan reportedly wanted to develop his own take on Supes back in 2019 (sounds like there was some truth to the rumor) when he first joined the studio, and while nothing ever came of that, it is "possible that the studio could return to him to star down the line."

Whether this Man of Steel would replace Cavill's as the main DCEU Superman or exist in a separate "Elseworld" reality like Joaquin Phoenix's Joker remains to be seen.

J.J. Abrams will produce the film as part of his new WarnerMedia deal, but there's no word on whether he may also direct. Acclaimed essayist and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates has been hired to write the script.

What do you guys make of this news? Are you disappointed Cavill likely won't return as Superman, or do you feel it's time someone else got a shot at playing the Big Blue Boyscout? Drop us a comment down below.

@Desrow - I'm confused. There's literally nothing int he THR article that mentions it being set up as a "Black Superman story." https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/ta-nehisi-coates-to-write-new-superman-movie-for-warner-bros

@HeavyMetal4Life - Just did, the only reference to "black" is the mention of Coates work on Black Panther.

@HowlettCommando - here is the paragraph, copy pasted from the THR article:

"According to sources, the project is being set up as a Black Superman story. This is something that the studio has been trying to wrap its head around for months, if not a year or two. Michael B. Jordan tried to develop a Black Superman project when he first arrived at the studio with his deal in 2019, but that did not go very far at the time, according to sources. It is possible that the studio could return to him to star down the line."

@Desrow - @aresww3 - You know what, I don't actually think this will be a bad movie. I know it can't be worst than a Snyder movie, like Man Of Steel.

That being said, I'm sorry it ain't a Superman movie. I often defend race bending, but characters like Superman, Batman, James Bond, that's where I draw the line. It is inbuilt into the DNA of the story that they are white. Changing that fundamentally violates the story and turns them into a completely different character.
