Kirk Alyn as Superman

1.] Superman (1948, 15 part serial)

Stars an uncredited Kirk Alyn. It is notable as the first live-action appearance of Superman on film and for the longevity of its distribution. It was originally screened at movie matinées and after the first three scene-setting chapters, every episode ends in a cliffhanger. The Superman-in-flight scenes are animations, in part due to the small production budget.

Plot synopsis:
The story centers upon the hero and the nefarious Spider Lady, who is trying to rule the Earth. If she cannot have complete control, she plans on shrinking it with her powerful reducer ray. Much of the episodes center upon Superman's relationship with Lois Lane and upon his ability to fly.

2.] Atom Man vs. Superman (1950, 15 part serial)

Plot synopsis:
Lex Luthor (the Atom Man), invents a deadly amount of devices to plague the city, including a disintegrating machine which can convert people in to their basic atoms and reassemble them in another place. However Superman manages to thwart each scheme.

George Reeves as Superman

3.] Superman and the Mole Men (1951, feature film)

Superman and the Mole Men is a 1951 black and white film starring George Reeves as Superman. It was the first theatrical feature film based on the Superman characters. It was shot in 12 days on a studio backlot. Fifty-eight minutes long, it served as a trial run for the syndicated TV series Adventures of Superman, for which it became a two-part episode titled "The Unknown People".

Plot synopsis:
Reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane are sent to the small town of Silsby for the inauguration of the world's deepest oil well. Unbeknownst to the drillers, however, the drill shaft has penetrated the underground home of the "Mole Men", a race of small, furry (though bald-headed) beings. The Mole Men come up through the shaft at night to explore the surface.

4.] Adventures of Superman (1952-1958, TV series)

The show is the first television series to feature Superman and began filming in 1951 in California. The show's first two seasons (episodes 1–52, 26 titles per season) were filmed in black-and-white; seasons three through six (episodes 53–104, 13 titles per season) were filmed in color but originally telecast monochromatically both on the ABC network and in first-run syndication.

John Rockwell as Superboy

5.] Adventures of Superboy (1961, unaired pilot)

The Adventures of Superboy was a proposed TV series that was put into production in 1961. It was meant to capitalize on the success of Adventures of Superman, which was cancelled years earlier. A revival was planned, but abandoned following the death of George Reeves, but only a pilot episode, "Rajah's Ransom", was produced. It featured the first non-comic book portrayals ever of Superboy.

David Wilson as Superman

6.] It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's Superman (1975, Televised production of the Broadway play)

"It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" was made into a TV special on February 1, 1975. The show was significantly shortened, and the ethnicity of a troupe of evildoers was changed from Chinese acrobats to Mafia-style gangsters. The show was broadcast on the ABC network under its Wide World of Entertainment late-night umbrella title to poor critical reception. It starred David Wilson as Superman/Clark Kent.

Christopher Reeve as Superman

7.] Superman, The Movie (1978)

Superman: The Movie is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Richard Donner directed the film, which stars Christopher Reeve as Superman. The film depicts the origin of Superman, from infancy as Kal-El of Krypton and growing up in Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered attitude in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane, while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.

8.] Superman II (1981)

Superman II is the 1980 sequel to the 1978 superhero film Superman. It was the only Superman film to be filmed by two directors. For this reason, the film is surrounded with controversy since original director Richard Donner had completed, by his estimation, roughly 75% of the movie in 1977 before being taken off the project. Many of the scenes shot by second director Richard Lester in 1979 are refilmed Donner sequences.

9.] Superman III (1983)

Superman III is a 1983 superhero film and the third film in the Superman film series based upon the long-running DC Comics superhero. The film was the last Reeve/Superman film produced by Alexander Salkind and Ilya Salkind.

10.] Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is a 1987 superhero film, the last of the Superman theatrical movies starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. In this film, Superman battles Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) and his creation, a solar-powered evil clone of Superman called Nuclear Man.

John Haymes Newton as Superboy

Gerard Christopher as Superboy

11.] Superboy (1988-1992, TV series)

Superboy was a half-hour live-action television series based on the fictional DC Comics comic book character Kal-El's early years as Superboy. The show ran from 1988–1992 in syndication. It was renamed The Adventures of Superboy at the start of the third season. John Haymens Newton played Superboy on the 1st season of the show and on the last three season Superboy wa played by Gerard Christopher.

Dean Cain as Superman

12.] Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997, TV series)

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is a live-action American television series based on the Superman comic books. Lois & Clark aired on ABC from September 12, 1993 to June 14, 1997, and starred Dean Cain as Superman/Clark Kent. The series loosely follows the comic philosophy of writer John Byrne with Clark Kent as the true personality, and Superman as a secondary disguise. As the show's title suggests, it focuses as much on the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane as on the adventures of Clark's alter-ego.

Brandon Routh as Superman

13.] Superman Returns (2006)

Superman Returns is a 2006 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Directed by Bryan Singer, the film stars Brandon Routh as Superman. It is a sequel to Superman (1978) and, to a lesser extent, Superman II (1980), and ignores the events of the two previous installments in the Superman film series –– Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). The film tells the story of the title character returning to Earth after several years of absence. He finds that his love interest Lois Lane has moved on with her life, and that his archenemy Lex Luthor is plotting a scheme that will destroy the United States.

Tom Welling as Clark Kent

14.] Smallville (2001-2011, TV series)

Smallville is an American television series developed by writers/producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on the DC Comics character Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The television series was initially broadcast by The WB, premiering on October 16, 2001. The longest-running comic book based series in television history, Smallville began its tenth season in September 2010. The series follows the adventures of Clark Kent (Tom Welling), who resides in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, during the years before he becomes Superman. The first four seasons focused on Clark and his friends' high school years. Since season five, the show has ventured into more adult settings, eventually focusing on his career at the Daily Planet, as well as introducing other DC comic book superheroes and villains.

@hovis...I agree, Cain really nailed it. Just wish he'd had better writers and villains.

Ryan McPartlin, Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer or Daniel Cudmore as the next Superman!

Dean Cain's the [frick]ing MAN!!!

Knightstalker- Although i'll agree that his villains could or better yet should have been well... better, writing wise, the whole show was class, from the first season to the last! Every character in the show was brilliantly written and acted, and the relationships between the characters were even more well written! The sets were also awesomely made and looking at it today, it almost makes me wish we lived in that world. Everything seemed so enjoyable all the time, even in times of crisis! :)

Lois & Clark is a show i still watch to this day with not much more than a few month's time between every time i restart the series. That's not something i can say for many shows!

Dean Cain was the best for me. I never took the show seriously until recently. I'm going through them all in order and I'm about half way through season three. His Clark was the most relatable version of the character to hit the screen to date and his Superman displayed real emotion and honesty that the others didn't have. Christopher Reeve, as good as he was, was (IMHO) too cocky as Superman, there was a real smugness that came through his performance.

ACCESS, like to point something out, in Atom Man vs. Superman, not once do they call him "Lex Luthor." He is credited as Luthor and never referred to as "Lex." Thanks for this though, good job.

Shaman

BornToRon- YES!!! AMEN!!! THANK YOU!!! Yeah, there damn well was a smugness to his character. True, it wasn't really Reeve's fault, it was how Superman was written. Unless i'm missing the part where he made the director let him play a smug Superman. But yeah, i never could stand the scenes where he meets Lois on her balcony, when he confronts the trucker in the diner, when he underestimates Solar Man and especially when he turns back time. Those were all scenes of "I'm Superman, not you! And what I say GOES! And by the way yes, my cock is as super as i am". Dean Cain might have had some cockyness but only in the playful human sense that would come from growing up as a human in a human family, establishing his own human sense of humor. But he never showed any "smugness" unless he was face to face against a smug villain that underestimated Superman's abilities. Like the scene where Lex bragged about owning the tallest building in Metropolis so that everyone would need to look up to see him. Well Supes flew off his balcony and told him that if he ever needed to see him, all he had to do was "look up". THAT was amazing writing right there, and the whole series is written entirely in the same fashion!

Plus, what i've always said that i've adored about Lois & Clark is the fact that the true character IS Clark, not Kal-El. Kal-El is who he WOULD have been if Krypton never exploded. He was raised as Clark, a human name for a human upbringing, and should damn well act like it! Superman is the perfect ideology that he "plays" to inspire the citizens of Metropolis, but he isn't naturally Superman. The fact that he is one of the best human beings on the planet doesn't come from being Kryptonian, it comes from being a KENT. As it should, in my book.

Christopher Reeve was Superman! Now, Gerard Christopher was the best incarnation of Superman on the small screen. Honestly, Superboy was a really awesome show and very true to the comics. Superboy did not have a "Freak of the week." no, Superboy had genuine DC Comic Villans.

The next Superman movie needs to follow elements of the John Byrne style Superman type. John Byrne depowered superman greatly, which made the character more realistic. Chrisopher Nolans batman works because batman seems plausable. I believe this approach would work with Superman.
Superman comes from a super dense planet, alien humanoids evolved against a great gravational field--evolving them into people who have emense bone/muscle density. Couple that with their ability to observe energy from the son (kinda like plants) and you have a plausable charater with great power. I think that needs to be touched on.
Anderson Davis as superman fighting Doomsday or Darkseid would be an awesome flick. I am starting to really think Andy would be ideal. I saw a commercial of him for GE, he is a grecian olympian (And built) who miss throws the Disk into the temple. I'm like wow, I could see with being Superman. Check it out guys.

@ jahozafat

no i think the plane rescue scene was amazing & brandon routh was good as superman.

the shit bits of superman returns where the likes of lois lane, super child, picking up krytonite islands & superman recovering in a hospital bed.

i think routh should be considered for superman his acting has improved over the years unlike tom welling who is laughable at best.

LP4 - 11/29/2010, 10:40 AM
@deadpool72- Gotta disagree with you. Even IF routh's acting has improved, his acting SHOULD HAVE BEEN good when he was Superman. Plain and simple.

His acting improved...too late. Time to move on with a new face for the Man of Steel.

As for the plane scene, it really wasn't all that exciting. People made it seem better than it actually was. Routh wasn't good as Superman because he did no real acting in the film. He barely had any dialogue at all! He barely said a word. I would say- Lex and Lois were the main characters in that film because by far- Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth had more dialogue in the film. All Routh really did was stand around in a Superman suit for nearly 3 hours while smiling for the camera.

Routh just sucks. I don't want him coming back to Superman EVER again. Routh-fans already had their "Routh/Superman" film. Time for the routh-fans to be fair and give other people the chance to see a new face for Superman.

Oh and @Hovis, Knightstalker and sh4ko- I TOTALLY AGREE DEAN CAIN FTW!!!!!!!!!

He was the only one who had a tone that matched what I was looking for in a live action Supes. Modern, believable, relatable and just all around THE BEST!

Dean Cain [frick] all the haters...you rock man. =)

Dean Cain has gotten the MOST SHIT ON by fans which is sad. I always enjoyed his portrayal THE MOST. I mean Reeve was too out of this world. Dean Cain seemed more like a "home-town hero" type. Dean Cain= The underdog and most misunderstood Supes EVER.
LP4
LP4 - 11/29/2010, 10:55 AM
Dean Cain was the only REAL Superman. Reeve= too overhyped. Routh= mimicked the overhyped and thus failed miserably and Welling= not even Superman.

The Dean Cain Superman series had great stories, a great Lex and for ONCE a REAL live action Superman. He even taught kids to recycle in some episodes i remember. I mean the simple fact he took time out to teach kids valuable lessons may be "corny" to some but to me- that takes real heart for Dean to have actually spoken through the t.v to kids in that kind of a way. Dean Cain has the heart and passion for Superman. He was the best. If only Dean Cain could make a COMEBACK. -_-.

Like i said- Dean Cain even spoke to KIDS in ways that Reeve never even bothered. It's just sad people always shit on Dean Can's portrayal. By far the most misunderstood one. He could act circles around Welling and Routh.

Deadpool@ Routh's acting has improved? I must be missing something. :P

I don't get all the love for Cain. He was wimpy and just too cheesy with his whiny little voice and face...just didn't do it for me. More of a Superboy to me. Listen to his voice and then listen to George Reeve's voice. Night and day. I never was much of a Reeve fan either. I like the old school Superman actors.

For the love of all that is right, let's get an imposing manly Superman. No more of these young pretty boys.

LP4- I agree!!! Dean Cain's the [frick]ing MAN!!!

Ranger14- The cheesyness of Cain's acting that you are perceiving ONLY comes from his line delivery as Superman. His acting as Clark Kent was on par with Teri Hatcher's if not even better in certain scenes. My point is that it was "meant" to be cheesy in a sense because it was Clark "playing" Superman. He deliberately sounded unnatural when he was in tights because he was being someone he's not for the sake of the people watching him, adoring him for what he did and emulating how he acted. Your prefered version of Superman would surely be the one where he "plays" at being Clark but is truly Kal-El. Personaly, i'll never relate to that and can't even see the logic in it since he was raised by humans. But to each's own. I can fully understand your opinion even if i don't agree with it. :)

Dean Cain? Really?? What the Hell are u guys smoking?? He has the asian look to him, which CONTRIBUTES TO HIS LOOKING NOTHING LIKE CLARK OR SUPERMAN!! His acting was nothing to write home about either. How many of you know that Gerard Christopher actually had the role in Lois and Clark but once the powers that be behind the series found out he was the lead in Superboy they axed him?? Supposedly they did not want anyone who had previously portrayed the character, but I think Gerard would have been much better, but no-- let's go with the GUY WHO LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE CHARACTER!! Couldn't agree with u more ranger14!! For all u welling haters out there which series has survived for 10 seasons? NOT LOIS AND CLARK!!

Daniel Cudmore Bizzaro Superman maybe.

Ryan McPartlin and Armie Hammer are blond.

Christopher Reeve was the best Superman. Which is why I believe that after he could no longer play the role they went the route of doing the character on TV for so many years and why they have had so many problems making a movie.

I loved Christopher Reeve's portrayal, and I hate how people have said he was overrated as Superman or too overhyped. Chris breathed life into the character at a time when Superman was dead(in terms of popularity) and made him relevant again. Routh wasn't horrible at all to me, but the writing failed him. People hate how long it has taken Welling to don the suit. Well, people forget that Clark GENERALLY doesn't become Superman until his late 20's or early 30's and with a 70 plus year history, there's a lot of story to tell. Welling is not a bad actor as he has progressed greatly. I've seen far, far worse actors.
LP4
LP4 - 11/29/2010, 6:17 PM
@KalEl84- I misspoke and shouldn't have referred to Reeve as "overhyped" I grew up with his interpretation and I did love it as a kid. But it's just people are always trying to find guys who look like Reeve when casting for Superman. In the last film- "Superman Returns" Bryan Singer even admitted in an interview that he only chose Routh because his "eerie resemblance to Reeve" which i think it's stupid to cast like that. If you're casting for a Superman film- cast for SUPERMAN...NOT Reeve. I am just tired of people putting Reeve on this pedestal that every actor for Supes must look just like him. THat is total b.s and that is why i'm soooo happy WB finally said they don't want to re-create the image of Reeve or Routh. I am so happy they are going for a new look altogether as they said themselves. Casting another Chris Reeve look-alike hardly makes that guy the Superman of OUR generation when he is meant to be a mimic of the Superman of my parent's generation, see my point?

And to be honest, I feel that had Singer not tried soooo hard to make his film an homage to the Chris Reeve ones, I feel the film could have done a lot better. Had it STOOD ON ITS OWN TWO FEET like in the way "Batman Begins" did for Batman, then I'm sure the film would have been a lot better. It wouldn't have failed. Bryan Singer proved that the "Donner formula" just won't work these days with a modern-audience. So it is now time for Superman to have his own "Begins" story so to speak.

For the next film- no more homages, no more reeve look-a-likes and no more of the 'same'

We need something different...something unique to make this film stand out from the rest. It needs to bring Supes back to his throne where he belongs. I really don't want another "Superman Returns" to make its way back to the big screen.

Reeve's Superman must stay buried with him (no offense but it should)

That i just how i feel and if you do not agree that is fine and i respect that. But I think a lot of people would agree that the Reeve-casting needs to stop. Reeve isn't the only one who can look like a Superman. There are many versions throughout his entire comic book history (OVER 70 years of it) so casting shouldn't always have to fall back on the shoulders of Reeve.
KalEl84
KalEl84 - 11/29/2010, 6:49 PM
@LP4 My comment wasn't a direct shot at you, man, but I've seen so many people hate on the Chris Reeve portrayal of Superman when if it weren't for him, we may well have never gotten a Superman film to begin with. I would love to see someone cast in the image of Jim Lees Superman...as that, to me, is Superman right now.
