Zack Snyder On Visual Style Of A "Realistic" Superman And Henry Cavill's Workout!

Many thanks to Screenrant for the following excerpts. Be sure to click the link at the bottom of this article to head on over to the site to read more! Firstly, the director of such styilzed movies as 300 and Watchmen commented on whether he'll be bringing any of his iconic techniques to Superman.

"I think the visual style of 'Superman,' though I can’t say for certain as it’s early, but I kind of feel like — and I did say to the studio – that what’s cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that 'Superman' is probably going to be the most realistic movie I’ve ever made."

"It’s kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called 'Superman.' Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible… He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think."

As for how Henry Cavill is preparing for the role, Snyder said, "Henry’s gonna be hitting the iron pretty hard." And his wife, Deborah, who will be producing the movie, had this to say:

He’s working right now. They’ve put him on a plan, he’s started in England and as of April 1st we have him full time with us for all that training."

It's also mentioned that the actor is working with Mark Twight, who trained all of the actors in 300, and Damon Caro for the fight training. So, I guess that Snyder's promises of us getting to see a physical Superman who kicks some ass were pretty accurate after all!

I'm not worried about the look, I'm worried about the script... the actual dialogue. I could care less about the physical look of the film.

the more he talks the more i realize how perfect he was to direct this with saying stuff like:

- him saying his favorite superman is the imposing muscular superman
- favorite artists are Jim Lee and Curt Swan
- Superman is gonna be punching people and be a physical cat
- Henry is on the 300 Diet
- Realistic movie not super stylized
- look at the cast he has got so far

Hopefully he's not too buff, Superman gets his power from the sun so he doesn't need to be completely ripped. But as far as I'm concerned I just wanna see Superman kicking ass.

the fact that they have him hitting the iron hard makes me very happy. that was why i wasn't sold on Cavill as Superman. i didn't believe the guy could kick ass. trainer from 300 is awesome news for this.

as he is now Cavill would have a great build for Spider-Man but he is Superman and needs to look the part, so i give a thunbs up to Snyder for this news.

with the realistic visual style he is talking about being different from his previous movies, i am taking that as less of the green screen digitally computer animations in the backgrounds and be more realistic.

basically a blending of Snyders directorial style and the dude is awesome with the action genre, but blended with the realism of Nolan's style with Batman. i don't mean dark like Batman, but set in the real world, with believable characteristics.

TheDesertGorilla@ While I agree with you on the height part (He is a tad shorter than me and I am 6'1" on the button) we will never see Routh as Superman again. It is strange to even throw it out there. Routh had the stature, but he doesn't have the acting chops. Cavill has the acting chops, but his challenge is that he doesn't have an imposing stature and adding bulk to his smaller frame isn't going to help a lot because he has a shorter torso. He may look bulkier, but he won't look "large" and imposing.

With Nolan godfathering this project (whatever that means) a realistic, real world-feeling movie is no surprise.

@Ranger14 Routh had the acting, but the script didn't have him talking at all.

spideyboy@ You can see posts from me over a year ago that had that same rationalization and I defended him as well, until I saw his same uninspiring performance in Chuck, Zack and Miri Make a Porn, etc. The guy has shown no range of emotion in anything he has done and he doesn't seem to know how to use voice inflection. If the guy was a decent actor he would be getting better roles than the lead in Dylan Dog by this time ;-)

Yeah, I hope we don't go overboard with this "realistic" thing Christopher Nolan has given birth to. Zack, it's SUPERMAN. He has ridiculous godly strength, heat vision for some reason, can breathe in space, has ice breathe, sees through walls and can FLY. Next thing you know they'll be talking about a "realistic" FLASH and cast some poor guy to run his ass off in a film with no FX.

I got faith, Zack. Just don't get too lost.

@DesertGorilla- Why ask for Routh back? Guy sucks at acting so I'm glad he's gone.

@Ranger- No use trying to reason with routhbootists. They never understand that in essence- Routh has played the same monotone-role in every film he's ever been in. He never evokes ANY emotion. He's a stinky actor. I remember one time a person rationalized about routh that "acting isn't easy" but shit...if acting is so hard for Routh to do, then he should seriously switch careers, i mean damn.

Oh and @JoshW- Nice article.

"Realistic" Superman? That's reaching way out there ain't it? As if there really is somebody out there in the REAL world capable of flying faster than the speed of sound unassisted with powers beyond our human ken and fighting evildoers with powers too. Yeeeeaahhhhh right. I like you Zack, but keep it simple and don't overestimate.... Singer did when he tried to channel Richard Donner into his Superman Returns flick. In a roundabout way, you're sorta paraphrasing the original movie's tagline: "You will believe a man can fly".

Nolan's Batman isn't as realistic as it sells itself to everyone to believe it to be - it's still a Comic Book Movie, nothing more, nothing less. Just stay at least true to the source material that is SUPERMAN and couple it with a great story and visuals and I'll be happy - I don't care if it isn't realistic as long as the movie doesn't suck on the delivery.

Sounds awesome, Synder is saying all the right things so far.

Superman can't be super-stylized like 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch. I want him to bring some of his signature elements in because after all he does it so well...But he can't go over the top. And it sounds like he realizes that.

And if Henry Cavill is about to get as ripped as Gerald Butler did for 300 then it sounds as if this version of Supes really will be intimidating, which is good. His power should have bad guys wetting their pants.

I can't believe people are still whining about Routh. Even in Hollywood, it's rare to find such a cardboard actor.

TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY@ I beg to differ with you...I am 6'1" to the dot and he is a tad shorter than me. I know that for a fact and not from reading heights listed on the internet. He is closer to 6 than 6'1. Even with an inch or two difference, Routh does have a much larger stature and imposing build than Cavill will ever have. Cavill is smaller in frame and torso. Such is life. Cavill is a better actor. No argument there from me.

@itbegins2005- Not really. I was actually hoping for a "heightened reality" for Superman. At least it would be different than the same stuff we've been spoonfed for the past 20 years of Superman films. Plus a heightened-reality works perfect for Superman. But a realistic world...? Yeah maybe for Batman, Supes is the kind of character who needs a world like Snyder's other films have portrayed. Just saying.

People mock Superman as "boring" because none of the films made any effort to change that horrible perception on the character. Donner, as great as he was with Superman for THAT time period...to be honest- for these modern days, his Superman films are boring and a bit stale. Singer...the idiot he was made a film even more boring and completely and utterly stale.

I would like Snyder to at least bring a more stylized take to the world of Superman. I just want something different. But if they are truly going "realistic" as he stated...realistic could imply they wanna "ground" Superman into more reality. And that just sounds boring to me. I don't want a "grounded" Superman because the whole thing that makes him so appealing to so many (including myself) is the fact that he is so FAR from realistic. I don't read comics to get a sense of reality, I read comics to see a guy in a bright suit flying around. That aint realistic and nor should it ever be attempted that way in a film. But I have complete faith in Zack Snyder (have from day 1) and I'm loving all of his decisions thus far. I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this. I just want something different for Superman. All we ever get is 'more of the same' if you know what i mean.

I have to agree with LP4.

To be bluntly honest I am a Marvel fan and I am one of those who thinks Superman is a boring 'been there..done that' character. However on screen he has not been portrayed in a really spectacular fashion.

Now is the right time for that and I believed that ZS was the right man for it.

However this new grounding in reality attitude is worrying. Personally I hate comic book superhero movies to be too grounded in reality. The movie world does not need to be as fantasy based as the comic but it does not need to have a great bulk of the fantasy sucked out. this is one of the reasons I dislike TDK as all the fantasy of the world of Batman has been sucked out to present what i found to be a lame and uninteresting crime drama. But this is a personal opinion and stance.

All we can do is wait and see but the one hope I had for this movie was ZS's style and flair and hyperrealism.
