BOX OFFICE: (Shell) Shocker! TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Likely To Open With $60M

Despite initially being expected to open with between $40 - $50 million (meaning it would have had some stiff competition from Guardians of the Galaxy), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now looks set to easily take the top spot with an impressive $60 million...

Variety reports that a strong Friday for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could see the Michael Bay produced reboot easily take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend.  Initial estimates had the movie opening in the $45 million range, and with Guardians of the Galaxy expected to earn that much during its second week as well, the battle for first place looked set to be a close one. However, with a Friday somewhere in the $19 - $25 million range, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could now earn as much as $60 million by close of business on Sunday.

Last weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy took roughly $30 million more than analysts believed, so the fact that the numbers are now looking so different shouldn't come as a huge surprise (and tracking is notoriously unreliable). Not finishing at #1 is no great shame for the James Gunn helmed Marvel movie, as we always knew that this reboot would pose a serious threat. By the weekend, Guardians should be closing in on $200 million domestically, and with little competition overseas, Star-Lord and his team will be adding a healthy amount to its current haul over the next few days. Of course, it wasn't too long ago that analysts said Captain America: The Winter Soldier wouldn't beat Rio 2, so stay tuned, as some surprises could still be in store. What do you guys think?

I still have retarded friends that are like "Dude, let's go see ninja turtles" and they don't even know about guardians. As a kid, I loved the turtles, but I just can't support bad movies. It's not good for anyone. If anyone's seen it, PLEASE tell me these new turtles aren't douchey.

"I dont trust critics, I like to make my own opinion."

I like to form my own opinion, but when the overall consensus of critical and general audience is in synch, I have to take it somewhat seriously and put the flags up or down, depending on whether it is a positive or negative consensus.

It's not going to make 60 million this weekend. And critics are people who love films. I understand not trusting one critic but when almost all of them say its bad, it's going to be bad.

Alright, Marvel fans and movie fans in America. Let’s get Guardians of the Galaxy to stay at #1 for its 2nd weekend and beat TMNT to pass $180 million domestically by Sunday with a weekend gross of $45.6 million dollars ($19 million today, $17 million tomorrow, and $9.6 million on Sunday) at #1 while TMNT settles in 2nd with $43.5 million ($18.5 million today, $15.5 million tomorrow, and $9.5 on Sunday). So, CMON GUYS. LET’S DO IT. AND, QUICKLY BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. PLEASE, please, I'M BEGGING ALL OF YOU, PLEASE don’t let a great Marvel movie lose to another Michael Bay crap movie just because of the explosions in the movie. Okay, thanks. ;)

To all the people who are with me, keep helping and supporting.
And, to all the criticizers and haters of my posts, keep hating cuz my posts are gonna keep coming til you listen to me. And, to reply back to your harsh comments on my comments, what you call “spamming”, I call supporting Guardians of the Galaxy. Besides, Guardians on Thursday made $3 million more than TMNT’s Thursday night shows.

I don't care what it scores on rotten tomatoes, I will withhold judgment until I actually see it. I don't need critics to form my own opinion.

It's one of those movies that has to establish itself first, so a lot of content is waiting for the explanation. But once it gets started I felt like it was better then I expected. Now that the explanation is out of the way the next movie can just go full out. I felt like the turtle personalities were well done. There are dorky bits that embellish too much of a stereotype (Donatello snorting when he laughs etc). But I look forward to the next one for sure.

Critics murdered this movie, but imo...I was honestly surprised by how not awful it was. I am completely divided.

I mean, Megan Fox is terribad (no surprise there), the plot is super plot holey and convoluted, and the origins and mythos is pretty bad (not gonna spoil anything but the way Splinter learns and teaches the Turtles Ninjitsu is just...no). But the Turtles were perfect. Their personalities and characters were great, and the family character arc Raphael goes through is pretty good as well. And the action is great too.

5/10 in my opinion. Not great but certainly not Age of Extinction bad.
