IDW's TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Will End With Issue #150; Jason Aaron To Pen Relaunch

TMNT fans were dismayed to learn that the current IDW run will conclude with issue #150, but we now have word that none other than Jason Aaron had been enlisted to pen July's relaunch...

IDW Publishing has announced that its current ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title will conclude with #150, as Sophie Campbell's acclaimed four-year run comes to an end.

"I still can't quite believe I've gotten to work on this much TMNT, I thought for sure I'd get the boot in the first year but nope – here I am four years later still here against all odds," said Campbell in a statement. "It's really been amazing, truly a dream job. I wonder what my 10-year-old self would think if she knew what she'd go on to eventually do." "The fact that this chapter is ending and I'm leaving the series is bittersweet, I'll miss it for sure, but it's time to move on and let somebody else have a shot at the Turtles, and I'll be back for more before you know it, whatever form that might take. As two great men once said, 'change is constant' and 'life at best is bittersweet.'"

Heroes in a Half-Shell fans were understandably disappointed by this development, but we do have some good news.

ComicBook.com has revealed that Eisner-award-winning writer Jason Aaron has been enlisted to relaunch the series, beginning with a 10-page prelude story in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1 one-shot this June, with the new ongoing title hitting shelves in July.

Notably, the new series will not be a full reboot, and will still be set in the previous IDW continuity.

"Launching a new TMNT comic series in the midst of the characters' 40th anniversary is clearly one of those dream jobs of all comic book dream jobs," Aaron says in a statement. "Especially for me, a kid who first fell in love with the Turtles all those years ago because of that original Mirage Studios series, buying those groundbreaking issues fresh off the rack, comics that kicked you in the face with their action-packed grit and gloriously raw attitude. I couldn't be more honored and thrilled to get to add to that esteemed legacy of comic book face-kicking, especially as part of an amazing IDW run that has expanded the world and timeline of the Turtles in such daring and exciting ways. In terms of what's to come, the kid in me wants you to know that you can expect some good old-fashioned grit, a sprinkle of dark, new attitude and all the bone-cracking action that four mutated ninja brothers can possibly handle."

We don't have any cover art or previews just yet, but be sure to keep an eye on CBM for updates.

If its still set in continuity then is the series really ending lol?

@Toonstrack - Yeah I'm not sure what that means. Maybe they're just starting a new story with Aaron and wanted to make a bigger deal out of it.

@Toonstrack - I hope it's not set in the same continuity. #150 has some time travel elements and a reality eating shark, so I'm hoping that facilitates the reboot. If not then Aaron is gonna retcon the shit out of continuity and make a big mess of things.

Vol. 5 has has a pretty tight family of writers (Tom Waltz and Sophie Campbell with Kevin Eastman) and artists and has even kept the same colorist for the whole 150 issues (Ronda Pattinson) and it's been pretty damn awesome, so to have some mainstream superstar come in and change everything would leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Best to end things with #150, imo.

@Toonstrack - Sophie's always said it's just her run ending. The series isn't ending at all, just new creative team coming on.
People are misreporting things.

@ObserverIO - i want the characters to continue. I like what they've built here and there's so many stories to tell with the cast.

@BritishMonkey - thats good. She'll be missed tho.

@Toonstrack - They could always return to the universe after rebooting.

A dream project would be Eastman, Waltz and Campbell co-plotting, Waltz and Campbell writing, Eastman on pencils and Cambell on inks.

These recent Eastman/Campbell covers are SO GOOD. A whole book like that set in the vol. 5 universe would be great. Even if it were just a limited series.

@Toonstrack - Definitely. She'll be back for covers though.

The series overall has flaws and, while I love her art-style, Sophie's run has been more misses than hits, but I still recommend any TMNT fan to give the IDW comics a shot. Maybe my favorite incarnation of the franchise to date, especially the first 100 issues.

Try to track down the hardcover "IDW Collections", since they have everything (the main series issues, crossovers and the various mini-series and one-shots) in the chronological reading order.

@FinnishDude - I absolutely love the first 100 issues and agree with it being one of (if not THE) best incarnations of the TMNT…
However once Campbell took over and turned everyone into a mutant it completely changed the series dynamic drastically and it turned into something way less interesting/boring and far too removed from TMNT (IMO) hopefully this “relaunch” can get things back on track

@Spidernoir - I personally wasn't against the idea of the Mutant Town. TMNT as a franchise been around for decades and IDW had already done something with the most popular concepts and characters, so a major status quo shake-up was more than fair and it could have potentially been a great TMNT's riff on Batman's "No Man's Land" story-arc. Unfortunately, most of that potential was ignored and the setting just became an excuse to do fluffy slice of life stories, which are something that every ongoing series need every now and then between big dramatic arcs, but they were just too slow paced, had some nonsensical plot-turns (previously violent and trigger happy Bebop and Rocksteady just silently accepting that they lost a battle of the bands), too many new characters introduced at once and major character developments (Jennika accepting her mutation, Casey becoming an alcoholic etc.) happening off-panel.

I haven't read any of Sophie's non-TMNT works, but she did fine when writing some of the Micro-issues and shorter arcs, so I feel she can crack a story, when working on the boundaries of a someone else's run, but holding all the threads of a whole run herself was just too much for her.

I remember when comics had 500+ issue runs, they just had jumping on points for new readers.

I think this new volume will just be a buffer between the last volume and the DC relaunch written by Chip Zdarsky or whoever (Paramount/Warner merger in April). Maybe it'll last a year or two.

Sounds like it's gonna be good though. Aaron's selling me with the dark, gritty violence angle. Count me in.

IDW's Ghostbusters series was amazing. I tried getting into their TMNT series but i read the first two collections and thought it was terrible. Maybe it got better?
