TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM Leaked Merch Reveals Turtles Character Designs And New Villains

TMNT fans have been clamouring for a first teaser for Seth Rogen's new animated movie, Mutant Mayhem, but in the meantime, we have a look at the revamped character designs via some leaked merch...

Seth Rogen's animated TMNT movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, is set to hit theatres this August, so a first teaser trailer shouldn't be too far off.

In the meantime, we have a first look at some of the Heroes in a Half Shell's revamped character designs courtesy of a range of tie-in action figures.

Leaked concept art has given us some idea of how the four Turtles, Leonardo, Donatello, Rafael and Michaelangelo, will look, but these images provide a much more detailed glimpse. They also feature Splinter, Bebop, Rocksteady, Leatherhead, and Superfly, who may or may not be a take on classic TMNT villain Baxter Stockman.

Check them out below, and keep an eye on Toonado.com for all your animated movie/TV series updates.

Plot details are still under wraps, but Rogen has previously said that he intends to emphasize the "teenage" aspects of the Turtles. While the teen/coming-of-age elements have obviously been explored in previous incarnations, it's never really been the main focus, so this could prove to be an intriguing approach.

The awesome foursome have starred in several features at this stage, with the most recent being the moderately successful (from a financial standpoint, at least) movies from Paramount and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. They previously appeared in animated form in Warner Bros.' 2007 adventure, TMNT.

Fans still regard the original 1990 film to be the best of the bunch, however.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was directed by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) and written by Brendan O’Brien (Neighbors)

I love the character designs! Copy the original cartoon and you'll make bank, [frick] Michael Bay for ruining a perfect opportunity

@bobevanz - the Bay movie designs were some of the least appealing characters I've ever seen. Oversized, ugly, and crude

Every mini-generation needs their Ninja Turtles.

@TheUnworthyThor - TRUE. Older Gen Z had the 2012 CGI series (the best version, of course), and Gen Alpha can have this version, which will hopefully be good.

@TheUnworthyThor - Yeah the 2003 version is still goated imo.

@TheUnworthyThor - Just not Rise, the only miss for that poor generation.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - Personally, I am not a fan, but my boys loved it (They are 8, 7, 6 and 4). It definitely skewed a little younger, and it took some liberties with the source, but it wasn't horrible.

The problem is that the two previous series are just a VERY high bar.

@malschla - It's cool that your boys enjoyed it & it's their generation of Turtles.

My adult mind though & being that I grew up with 90's animation, is the thought process of even though you're making this for kids & that's the demographic, doesn't mean you should make something that looks too childish for them design & drawing wise. Make the cartoon as childish as you like story & dialogue wise, but I'm always gonna be at least draw something that doesn't look awful just because it's something for kids & the older market isn't your target audience. Especially seeing as how most generations of turtles have always had good designs, then they just took absolute liberties with Rise.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - it’s a different style. Some people like that lose exaggerated features. Art is subjective.

I actually had some hope for this, but these designs are not good. The turtles look fine, but no one else does.

They are too cartoons looking. He wants to focus on the teen aspect, but then made the characters look like children's designs.

Can we just get a new movie that focuses more on the original comics? Or, since it's so popular to do it these days, just ignore TMNT2 and 3 and do a continuation of the original movie. That was the only movie that really captured the original comics well, while also integrating some of the comedy from the cartoon.

@CorndogBurglar - Last Ronin. Bring back the OG cast.

@CorndogBurglar - I'd say 1 & 2 were in continuity even though 2 went campy / toned down after the parental complaints about 1. I've never really seen many ignore 2 but most definitely 3, even as a kid I found 3 to be awful, although I did like them in their Samurai gear & grabbed all those figures.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - I struggle with ignoring 2 or not. Don't get me wrong, I love it and it's a childhood favorite. But it doesn't follow the same tone. So if you were going to do a continuation of the original movies, you would have a more serious first movie, a goofy and funny 2nd movie where Donnie is the only one that even uses his weapons, then jump back to a 3rd serious movie.

I don't like the sound of that. So I think ignoring 2 would be the way to go.

@CorndogBurglar - I suppose looking at it that way, then sure.

But, if you have serious tone ala the first movie, but having the comedy / lighter elements for the kids I suppose you could euqally balance it out (Hopefully).

Look at TMNT as the Winter Soldier of the Turtles franchise whilst TMNT II was more Guardians / Love & Thunder as it pertains to tone.

I'm just up for any new modern take though using practical effects / suits with people in them over the 2014 & 2016 CGI looks. You just really can't beat the Turtles, Splinter, Shredder or the Foot looks from the 90's movies.

@RorMachine - The other characters look out of proportion and like a child's cartoon design though. (Yes, I realize we're twlking about TMNT here, but I was hoping for something a little more serious.) They all look weird.

@Origame - time to have my eyes checked. I kept reading “Neapolitan” and was trying to figure out how ice cream factored into Raphael’s personality

Origame - 2/23/2023, 9:09 AM
@ProudPatriot76 - nah. He's just noticeably shorter than both Leonardo and Donatello. And given his normal personality in the past, I'd imagine he'd have issue with that.

Because...

GhostDog

@GhostDog - yeah! A new take on the character…but I kinda like it
Origame
Origame - 2/23/2023, 9:10 AM
@ProudPatriot76 - it would also make sense, given he's often depicted as the best fighter, yet keeps letting his teenage sons do all the fighting.
ProudPatriot76
ProudPatriot76 - 2/23/2023, 9:25 AM
@Origame - correct, because Hamoto Yoshi and Oroku Nagi enemies. When Yoshi killed Nagi, Nagi’s nephew Oroku Saki swore revenge on him as The Shredder. Yoshi is too old to fight him now. Thus, training the turtles in the art of Ninjitsu.

Unless they bypass all that and make Yoshi mutate into the rat.

@newhire13 - yup….that’s my bad. I sold all my TMNT comics last spring, including issue 1 and 2 signed by Kevin Eastman, so it’s been a bit since I’ve read the origin story
ProudPatriot76
ProudPatriot76 - 2/23/2023, 8:53 AM
Infinitely better than “Rise Of” character designs. I’m just really hoping that the turtles aren’t stereotypes, again. Raphael the thug enforcer with his do-rag mask, Donatello the intelligence with his glasses, Michelangelo the party dude will most likely be made the funny stoner, and Leonardo the “by the books” leader. Michael Bay’s films did that already…go far from that

Either way, I’m a HUGE TMNT fan and will be there opening weekend!

They look… okay? After Invincible and The Boys, I have faith in Rogen when it comes to comic adaptations, but man… I’m so tired of the 1987 cartoon wanking. Don’t get me wrong, I love that incarnation, but it isn’t the end all, be all for the franchise. I, for one, would love a trilogy or animated series based on the IDW comics.
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 2/23/2023, 10:11 AM
@kRAVENkIaw - Yeah a series based on the IDW comics would be great, with bit of the 03' series influence put in for good measure lol.

Definitely not their best designs for TMNT characters. I’m glad the cartoons in the 80’s -90’s were cooler designs than the cartoony versions they’ve been making lately.
