The Flash, a blockbuster David Zaslav and James Gunn have hailed as "the greatest superhero movie ever," has finally arrived in theaters.
Initial box office estimates suggested the DC Comics adaptation would open with a massive $140 million, though current signs point to it being lucky to make half of that in North America. Now, word of mouth could be about to take a massive hit.
While we've seen The Flash dip to 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, regular moviegoers were given the chance to weigh in yesterday and a CinemaScore has since been generated.
Despite not necessarily being as important to a movie's opening weekend chances as a Rotten Tomatoes score, this grade offers an idea of what people are thinking and, typically, a bad grade results in a lower-than-expected debut and a massive drop when the second weekend rolls around.
As you can see below, The Flash has been awarded a "B."
That means it's tied with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the worst-rated DCEU release. That movie had a massive opening in 2016 but fell significantly the following week, resulting in it being deemed a financial disappointment (which is why Warner Bros. changed course with Justice League).
The other DCEU CinemaScores are Man of Steel (A-), Batman V Superman (B), Suicide Squad (B+), Wonder Woman (A), Justice League (B+), Aquaman (A-), Shazam! (A), Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (B+), Wonder Woman 1984 (B+), The Suicide Squad (B+), Black Adam (B+), and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (B+).
"Far from the greatest superhero movie ever made and not quite among the worst," we said in our review, "The Flash is still another mediocre effort from the DCEU with appalling VFX and a messy story that the excellent Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle alone are unable to save."
The Flash is now playing in theaters.
