Wear This: Rocketeer Replica Costume

How much would it cost to deck yourself out in an authentic movie costume? Wallets beware, you can’t find this gear at your local Walmart.

The Rocketeer comics followed the adventures of Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot in 1938 Los Angeles who discovers a mysterious jet pack that allows him to fly. The character was created by writer and illustrator Dave Stevens as a homage to the pulp heroes of the 1930s and 1940s. Stevens gave the comics a retro, nostalgic feel influenced by the King of the Rocket Men movie serials and Commando Cody TV series.

Walt Disney Pictures released a live action film featuring the high flying hero, which was directed by Joe Johnston and starred Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin andTimothy Dalton. Though the film garnered favorable reviews from critics, it was a box office failure and ended the possibility of any sequels immediately. That didn’t stop it from becoming a cult classic, with VHS and DVD sales success. To this day it is considered by many to be the most accurate comics-to-film adaptation. Several sequences can even be compared shot-for-shot with Steven’s comic books.

The Rocketeer costume was a Halloween favorite for several years after the film’s release. I was the proud owner of a horribly tacky and cheaply made Rocketeer getup; a gift for my 8th birthday. That year I came up with any excuse to throw the latex helmet and plastic Cirrus X-3 jet pack on. I must not have been one of only a few to love that costume; with a simple internet search you can see that they are still produced and sold today, in all their nylon and Velcro glory.

Though I may still have the urge to don the finned helmet and jodhpur riding pants as an adult, the ensemble would definitely need an upgrade. Here I’ve assemble the best Rocketeer costume replica, both official and unofficial, available that any fan would be proud (and broke) to own.

The Helmet

Master Replicas and Walt Disney Showcase Collection are proud to offer this special replica of the Rocketeer Helmet. An actual hero prop was carefully studied and painstakingly copied to create this special collectible; finished in antique gold, a soft cotton liner and leather chin strap.’ $600

The Jacket

Abby Shot has what I’ve found to be the most accurate representation of the Rockteer leather jacket currently on the market. To top it off, they also sell gloves to match the outfit. Jacket: $622 / Gloves: $28

*Click on the jacket to view an image of the gloves

The Johdpurs

Billings Army Navy Surplus has a hefty stockpile of WWI/WWII era Cavalry Riding Pants (also known as Johdpurs). They are not reproductions so you should definitely handle them with care. . $99

The Boots

And finally. . .

The Cirrus X-3 Jet Pack

Monsters in Motion are the only company to offer this amazing item. It is a full-scale reproduction sculpted from photo references and technical drawings. If you feel you have the handyman skills to build this replica yourself, they will sell you the complete parts kit for only $950. If you want your jet pack hand crafted and factory finished, it will only run you $4,500

Total Cost = $5,927

Dr. Strange, Daredevil or Deadpool that looked like the real deals would be cool. Basically anything that starts with the letter D

Oh, I see where you are going.

Then I suggest Blade or Luke Cage. Luke's would be simple but you gotta find the right headband man.

I know the character isn't exactly comic book material, but I would love to see a Link costume put together like this!

I have been interested in making a cylon suit from the 1978 BSG. Everything is pretty well documented except for getting the chrome plating to stick to the styrene.

Fun fact: Joe Johnston, the director of the Cap movie, also directed "The Rocketeer" as well as doing the character designs of Boba Fett and Predator.

The Rocketeer will always be one of my favorites. I saw it when I was a kid, just 9 years old, and fell in love with Jennifer Connely that instant, and have remained loyal to this day.

Nice Article and I understand why YOU would be wearing a Superhero costume to promote this site and all... COOL.But the average nerdy Joe blow LIKE MYSELF LOL.... that's probally why some of you havent had a suitable date in the last 5-10yrs. I guess that explains all the half-naked photos lol. Buying comics, hitting the movies, going to conventions(I've never been to one have to do that one day),and belonging to a web-site is cool. But when a grown man starts dressing up outside of halloween you've just crossed the line LOL...JUST KIDDING TO EACH HIS OR HER OWN. I dont honor halloween so I guess I have no excuse to dress-up as CAGE or BLADE....CRAP!!!

How about...The Invisible Woman? Ha ha! Kidding. I've seen the original Rocketeer costume at the Sci Fi Museum. The original has a lot of weathering.

I hope you dont mind me elaborately better ways to do this costume since it looks like you didn't research this costume well enough. 1) The MR aka master replicas helmet usually goes for 300-400 not 600..However, MR is known for it's inaccuracies especially the squish look. Plus, If you plan on wearing this at convention, than it will definitely kill your neck because it is heavy .The Monsters in motion helmet aka The acme helmet is 200 and requires some dremmel skills and a paint job..It will save you money in the end, and you wont have a squished head,..2) Abbyshot does not offer the rocketeer jacket anymore, and it wasn't the most accurate jacket out there. The most accurate will cost you 800. 3) there is a company online that makes johdpurs base on your size 4) motorcowboy company is horrible. Their costumer service is horrible, and their boots will not fit your measurements. They get people's boot measurements wrong, and they end up smaller. And they are not 78 dollars they are 550..I recommend magnolicclothiers..They are $50 more but they are more accurate and better service 5) monster in motions is just the middle man..The original maker is acme. Another website is timeslipcreations.com. They have better costumer service because Monster in motion is known for their bad costumer service..Best way is to do the kit, and follow directions from evan.org. Materials will be about 2-3 hundred more. It is time consuming but will save you money..6) the jacket worn by kropserkel isnt the abbyshot jacket it is the 800 dollar...
