THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Critiques Jane Foster's MCU Past And Explains Natalie Portman's Return

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has shared his thoughts on Jane Foster's previous MCU appearances and revealed how he convinced Natalie Portman to reprise the role for this upcoming sequel.

We first met Natalie Portman's Jane Foster in 2011's Thor, though the actor was very much relegated to "love interest." While she had a little more to do in 2013's Thor: The Dark World, the character was more damsel in distress than anything else, and it wasn't overly surprising when Portman seemingly decided to walk away from the role.

Now, she's set to return as Jane in Thor: Love and Thunder, though the Odinson's former flame will get a major upgrade when she becomes the Mighty Thor.

Talking in the video below, writer and director Taika Waititi shared his take on how the scientist has previously been portrayed on screen. "I think [Thor: Ragnarok] made these movies appealing to other actors. Christian [Bale] saw that and was like, 'I want to do something fun,' came here, [and] wanted to be part of this thing. And Natalie too."

"I think that she was just wanting to make sure that...I don’t even know how to say this, but her character in those first few films, it’s probably not the most exciting version of the female character that we want from these," the filmmaker continued. "I had to just talk to her about the fact that I wanted to change that character, just like we’d changed Thor’s character for Ragnarok and to give her a bit more license to be adventurous and fun because Natalie’s a really funny person."

Giving Portman a role she could sink her teeth into was clearly enough to convince her that returning to the MCU after nearly a decade was worth it. With Thor: Love and Thunder, she's gone from love interest to a superhero in her own right, and if we are getting that cancer storyline, there's also going to be a lot of dramatic material for the actor to explore.

Yesterday, Marvel Studios released a new set of posters for the Thor: Ragnarok follow-up and Jane was front and centre. Take a closer look at them by clicking here.

Thor: Love and Thunder promises to electrify audiences in theaters on July 8!

I liked her in Thor as the love interest (she was actually an astrophysicist but people don't mention that for some reason). Don't get me wrong she looks amazing all powered up too. But i don't think as love interest as a bad thing. I actually miss the civillian love-interest role in CBMs somewhat.

@TheManWithoutFear - Was about to say that, she was his love interest but also was from way before she met him researching about the Nine Realms and fought with Coulson and the SHIELD agents of getting her equipment back. She had a good origin story as Thor did and this now is the right direction to take the character and at the right time.

Literally only the dark world had her as a damsel in distress. And even then it was her planning/tech that ended up defeating malaketh in the end.

Did you watch the first Thor movie? The character had comedy in that and the second one, though I thought that one worked less, to me.

What does it mean to be exciting? I liked the character in the other movies and I liked her intelligence and such.

I think your change of Thor was dumb. I liked a part of it, but the, to me, dumb jokes are dumb jokes. Your movie killed off the warriors three and never even had it acknowledged or felt by Thor.

She already was. She helped stop the dark elves and Maliketh.

@dagenspear - I never really saw her as the damsel in distress either for the reason you underlined and agree re Ragnarok further more - Odin Dies, Hela is free and wreaking havoc in Asgard, Mjolnir is destroyed, the warriors 3 are killed, he looses an eye, Asgard is destroyed but its ok cause here's a dumb joke.

This film looks to be more of the same infantilisation of the characters

Her big arms are cgi in some of those scenes. Like the throne pic with Valkyrie.

I got an idea why she wanted to come back.

He should instead critique his previous movie. Specifically, the fact that he killed Thor's best friends and never had Thor acknowledge their deaths.

Jane's 3 character defining traits were being smart, socially awkward, and extremely attracted to Thor. That's pretty much it, and the scripts rarely found time for her to be much more than that. And that was fine for the Thor movies but there was clearly a lot more that could've been done with her even without turning her into Mighty Thor

He's right, BUT he has the added benefit of making his Thor movies AFTER Jane became the Mighty Thor in the comics, meaning he now has something to draw on from the source material. The first two movies didn't have that because they were made back before Jane went through that transformation in the comics. But yeah, glad Natalie Portman is getting more to do this time, she's always had these fairly bland roles in blockbusters and she's way better than that so I'm happy this is happening.

She wasnt a character, she was "female love interest", just like Sif was "jelous female bff", or Rhodey or Sam were just "token sidekick".
Different times.

It's true Jane was at the beginning of the Thor franchise the titular character's love interest but she also was the astrophysicist that was trying to prove the existence of the Nine Realms and the Bifrost and was very passionated about it that she didn't care to go up against SHIELD agents (Coulson), she was the 2nd female scientist main character after Betty Ross in The Incredible Hulk.

She was the brains back then and making her Mighty Thor years later like now is the right direction to go with Jane. But with that said I hope that Taika hasn't forgotten that she is very smart and makes her use her intelligence while wielding Mjolnir. It will make her stand out more apart from how Thor does things.
