Marvel has been pushing a significant amount of effort into their awards campaigns this year, even moreso than previous ones. This year they released not one, but two critical darling for the general audiences' viewing pleasure. It is not difficult to see why Marvel would take further steps to get their films recognized.
Out of their three films, Thor has the best chance of being recognized. Not only does it have an awards-friendly release date, it is also very well loved. It stands as one of the best reviewed superhero films of all time, but to be fair it is also currently tied with Wonder Woman, and Homecoming. At 92% on Rotten Tomatoes it is only one percent behind Logan. As long as Marvel keeps their campaign game strong it will definitely see some success in the usual technical categories (ex. Best Visual Effects) at the Oscars.
Seeing how they are prominently advertising recognition for Chris Hemsworth it is very possible we can see the God of Thunder being considered for best Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes this year. At the Globes, its chances for the major categories are the highest, due to the fact that they are split between comedies and dramas. This is the reason why Thor: Ragnarok being nominated for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) can be a major threat, but only if Marvel plays its cards right. It is one of the funniest films of the year, one that even puts comedy in front of action. Marvel will have to emphasize on its comedic side, and the fantastic character relationships present. (Tip to Marvel: Bring Taika Watiti to every awards screening.) That strategy will no doubt get this a Globes Best Picture nomination.
