THOR: THE DARK WORLD Director Talks Reviews And Possibly Returning For A Third Sequel

Alan Taylor responds to praise for the Marvel sequel's humor, explaining how his initial "darkening" approach was amended amid production, and whether he'll return for a third Thor installment.

“Um, yeah, I’m, I’m so grateful to hear that that’s what’s coming back from the audience as they start to see the film for the first time,” says Alan Taylor of the praised comedy in reviews of Thor: The Dark World. “I think I went into it, and I thought my first task was to darken the world and deepen it and dirty it up a little bit. Um, I sort of felt like that was my mandate going in. And then as we started the process, I realized, “Oops. Um, if we’re gonna darken it, if we’re gonna deepen it…we’d better make darn sure that it’s balanced on the other side.” Because the, you know, the key to the Marvel universe and the Marvel language that I was being assaulted by while I was making this movie -‘cause “Avengers” came out while we were starting it, and “Iron Man 3” came out while we were finishing it – was you are screwed if you don’t also keep it funny and light on its feet at the same time. So it’s, it’s called “The Dark World,” and there’s certainly dark currents in it, um, but, yeah, the humor was critical.”

When Screenrant asked Alan Taylor if would helm another Marvel venture, maybe Thor 3, the director wouldn't answer directly. “You mean start all over again? No. It was fun and quite an adventure, but… almost 2 years – too long away from family. But I’d be willing to – and eager to take on another big adventure just not go back and redo the same one. But you didn’t really mean remake Thor 2, did you? [Laughs]. One of the things that’s exciting and keeps us on the edge of our seats about Marvel is that they never announce what they’re going to do until the last minute. Will there be a Thor 3? I certainly hope so. They’ll probably wait until this one comes out before they let the world know. Thor will be back in Avengers 2, and I think he certainly deserves a Thor 3, but that’s up to the gods are Marvel to decide.”

“My experience with Marvel is that they are literally making it up as they go. They have a grand vision that we’ve been witnessing in Phase I, Phase II and Phase III, but literally, in the details, they make it up as they go – and I saw that up-close and personal when we were doing [Thor 2], when major elements were being worked out, really, in the making of the movie.”

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. It opens in theaters November 8, 2013.

yeah everytime i see an interview with Mr taylor,he seems like he isnt really comfortable talking openly which i can understand, also guys marvel didnt tell him to put tons of humor in the film,it was a collaboration,he thought since it was gonna be a sequel,it was suppose to be darker etc,but marvel didnt want that and he was happy with it too, he has been quite open about the conflicts, he agreed to the trunning time of the film with kevin feige and he understood that he had to take some scenes out and theres only one scene with malekith that explains alittle more about his backstory not much what i have heard, he has said that the only conflict he had was the choice of composer but hes happy with it now

@ezio

you are probably right. He seems like he isn't really comfortable to talk about how the final cut went down. Was the more humour his decision ? Or Marvel ? Or was it a collaboration ? Guess we will never now. He probably won't come back. Marvel are switching directors like crazy. Who's up for Thor 3 ?

I think that the Russos brother are the only one that could stick around for CA3. Everyone seems to be happy. Both Russos nd Marvel. Shane Black was a one part deal.

they might be saying that with every new director, comes a fresh take on the character ... but i think that's not the case. It's about creativity too. And sticking to your vision as well.

making it up as they go along? that explains why joss wheadon pretty much ignored the ending to iron man 2 in avengers, and why he will probably do the same with iron man 3

He sounds like he didn't really love the experience and wouldn't want to come back, and at the same time knows that he won't be asked to.

I'm probably reading way too much into it, but it would be consistent with all his previous statements and reports.

Either way, I'm looking forward to see his take on Thor.

It's pretty clear that Taylor didn't fully get to create the film that he wanted. Surely he was bound to certain creative aspects of the Marvel Universe, but it doesn't seem as though he is necessarily upset by that. He seems very understanding to the fact that, ultimately, he is a tool for Marvel to get out their product, not the other way around. That being said, I don't see his comment about Marvel "making it up as they go" as malicious in any way, or something that would induce any bad blood between him and Marvel. He is clearly talking about their planning of the Universe, and Marvel themselves has admitted that although they often have general ideas for future plans, nothing is set in stone and they fill in the details as those projects get closer to fruition. I definitely seems as though he could come back for another outing in the MCU, hopefully with Thor 3. Perhaps sticking out this relationship might ultimately give him more creative control to create what he wants.

Alan really comes off like a douche in these interviews. Perhaps Marvel really is a bad studio to work for, but I think an employee should take the high road and let the boss's less-than-professional behavior speak for itself. If you're not coming back, fine. Don't burn your bridges on the public stage. You always come out looking bad.

Just ask Terence Howard, Mickey Rourke, and Ed Norton.
faver
faver - 10/30/2013, 10:44 PM
The only scenario where I see him coming back is if the film makes 1B, and even then I'm not sure Marvel would ask him back (they might think the success is more due to the brand, the characters, the actors, The Avengers' influence, etc. than due to the director).

The only reason why he doesn't want to answer directly is because they are in the middle of promotion and saying 'I don't want to come back' or 'Marvel doesn't want me back' would imply a strained production. And every site would then report that comment and it could affect the film's performance.
